Interesting chart for those wanting Justin Houston

I want pass rushers as much as anyone. As far as I'm concerned, adding two talented rushers is our #1 need going forward. But paying a massive haul for Houston or Suh or any other break-the-bank guy doesn't project very well, unless you're the Jags with $35M of cap space to gamble with. These massive FA additions don't often pan out great.

Just saw this on Twitter. It's a chart that lists the recent FA pass rushers and their first-year sack totals with their new teams, and it's not inspiring.

Building through the draft is the way to go. And since pass defense flows from the rush, and we have zero worthwhile rushers, i wouldn't mind a repeat of 2007, taking rushers in the first two rounds.

I thought the top tier was sufficient. Plus it isn't JUST sack total... In regards to rushing the QB pressures can be just as valuable...............

Sure building thru the draft can be the way to go, but when you have holes at the position and draft picks at the position under-performing.

You have to fill those holes somehow, And a proven pash rusher can be effective in the here and now sense, where drafting a *** rusher might not pan out until their third year if at all.............

right now, the OLBs are open. It'll be interesting to see if we get some use from Howard Jones (who seems to be forgotten).
just throwing it out there, but maybe we move Jarvis to Worilds' spot and use Howard's speed at Deebo's?

I agree,

HoJo looked nice in preseason. Kid has a great motor, which cannot be taught.

Would love to fill our pass rushing woes in free agency. After watching the Cowboys if a Blue chip OL fell to our pick I would love to grab one. That OLine is dominant. Our Oline made strides but I still think it can get better. If we could somehow get Maxwell (CB) and McPhee(OLB) in free agency that would open the draft up to take best available instead of reaching. What Ben does will be key. Will he take a little less to help us get some guys?

I don't think we have to worry about the Steelers trying to sign Suh and Houston. This is not their way of conducting business, period. When was it we signed a big ticket F/A? The closest guy was Mike Mitchell last off season who I wouldn't exactly categorize as a top tier signing at the time. Too many of these guys sign these huge deals and never perform to the level of their past success. We go after the 2'nd tier guys and I'm ok with that as long as its the right players. Guys in the past like Farrior, Mewelde Moore, Ryan Clark, Kevin Greene, Wayne Gandy, Cocthery, Batch, and the others.

The cap is going up at least to 143 million. Wirh some of these guys retiring or not beong asked back. We will have some wiggle room. Not for Houston. But maybe guys like McPhee and Maxwell. Like I said what Ben does will be key.

and they will be cutting a few /extending a few / money will be there / can be there to get what is needed

True, but that top tier is small and cost a fortune to obtain. The second- or third-tier pass rush totals most of those guys put up typically cost a ton. Mario Williams cost the Bills a $9.8M, and Houston might cost twice that.

Absolutely. But I'd aim for the Willie Young (young, cheap up-and-comer) or John Abraham (old vets coming at a discount) classes. As opposed to handing out the bank-breaking deal Houston will command. There are just so, so few HUGE-ticket FAs that play like huge-ticket FAs.

where drafting a *** rusher might not pan out until their third year if at all.............

Tom Brady actually worked out nicely.

Oh I like the idea and that is more in line what the Steelers would do. Thing is if it is that level of player /price range / I would like two brought in. In that way the Steelers aren't forced to go with Jones unless he beats one of the pickups out.

we don't have money to sign any free agent want more than average/below average salary . we will sign a lot of vet minumum .. we have 4 milin in space and only 37 players under contract

The Steelers will not make a big splash in FA like that. Don't even bother. They have to lock up Ben, see where they are in cap and make a few minor moves. If you don't know that, you have not watched this team in FA in the last 20 plus years.
Saying what if the Steelers grabbed Suh is like saying, how would I spend the money if I won the lottery. Dream if you like, but the likelihood of either occurrence is about the same.

If that is fact, we have made a lot of bad contracts recently. This team is talent starved and overall very young.

see this way of thinking is tiring to me....

They brought in 6 free agents last year

if they want to bring in three say two OLBer and one corner. with some cuts/ extensions / and the salary cap increase it should be doable.

Funny every year I hear this though, and every year Steelers work their magic under the cap............

Locking up Ben can realistically free up money this year
