Rex is a long shot IMO.

Name some possible hires and why you think they are worthy.............

Butler has to be on the interview list. He deserves, at least, that.

Would they be gamblers and give it to Joey Porter?

Others are more in-touch with the possibilities than I am.

No freaking way Porter jumps from an assistant position coach to DC. If they give the DC job to Butler, they may consider Porter for the LB coach though.

Keith Butler has turned down multiple opportunities to stay with the Steelers. Have to say that he is the favorite.

Rex Ryan is not a long shot, he is a no shot. Why would he be a DC when he can be a HC or make huge money in TV? Just don't see it.

Not sure of any other names out there.

I think the Steelers will interview Rex Ryan honestly. They lured Munchak here last year and I feel they can do the same with Rex. Ryan switching to the 46 Defense but I'm not sure we have the personnel at the LB'er position to transition to a Rex Ryan 46 Defense as the OLB'ers typically match up against tackles to try and force the play inside or bounce back the other way where the backside LB'er has contain.

You also need a stud Free Safety who can be effective in run support and pass cover too....Safety is key to being able to run the 46.

I think the Steelers are best suited to the Tampa 2 Defense with the guys they have on that roster now. Especially the LB'ers.

Who ever we get, I hope the scheme and supposed complication, is changed. I wonder how much Dick L. had in talent evaluation and actual "picks"? When Rex was available, I thought heck yes, but now that is just a pipe dream. I wonder if "football baby" would be someone to consult?

Salute the nation

I admire your optimism, Chicoman, but I don't see Rex coming here when he's interviewing for HC positions. I'll **** my pants twice if it does happen, but I honestly don't see it going our way twice. We got lucky with Munchak. Very lucky. I'd love to proven wrong, though.

Munchak was a former position coach who had never been to the playoffs and does not have a big personality. Completely different situation than Ryan, IMO.

I don't know if Ryan would be the right guy for the job. I mean right now I just don't feel we have the personnel to run a 46 Defense. It would take several years to draft and a few good free agent pickups.

We are better suited for a Tampa 2 Defense at this point.

Prepare yourself for some good old Steeler loyalty.
Keith Butler it is

Rex is interviewing for HC jobs. I doubt he will be available. I'm definitely not in the Butler camp unless he has his own new ideas on playing D. I don't want the same system that takes 3 years to learn.

I feel bad for Butler because he has showed his loyalty here, but he would not be my choice. I dont know how you can be under Lebeau that long and not copy his defensive tendencies. If we wanted the same thing I think they would have just hung onto Lebeau longer. Also the LBs have not developed under Butler. I know the talent / drafting have been suspect, but I would have liked to seen some more progress. I do not think Porter has the brains to be a DC, but I think he should stay as a LB coach / motivator.

Keith Butler, Mike Nolan, Jim Haslett, Ray Horton and Wade Phillips

Are you dumb? The 46 was a defense built to stop the run and was shredded by Marino in '85 and later other decent passing attacks. That defense has no place in the today's NFL, lmao.

From the collegiate ranks theres Brett Venerables.....Clemson had the top defense in college football with marginal talent.....but im not sure i trust a collegiate coach at this juncture........

I'd go after Ray Horton!

Keith Butler, Mike Nolan, Jim Haslett, Ray Horton and Wade Phillips

Haslett? Really?

Horton is with Tennessee and they didn't allow Mularkey to interview for a promotion, so no chance he goes elsewhere.

The other two names are interesting.

I don't like the though of it, but if they are going to go to the 4-3 Tampa 2...

Raheem Morris.

hiring Horton wouldn't be a promotion for him. He's already a DC. My gut say it will be Butler. The Steelers are about promoting from within and loyalty. Keith Butler has shown that and the Rooneys don't take that lightly. Although a lot of players will be pissed with DL leaving, they may come back to earth to know someone familiar and they trust got the job. Just my opinion. . .

That's what I thought, regarding Haslett.

London Fletcher went on air and slammed him:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/dc-sports-bog/wp/2014/12/07/london-fletcher-slams-jim-haslett/

“Why does Jim Haslett still have his job as a defensive coordinator after five years now of just ineptitude at the defensive coordinator position?” Fletcher asked on CBS Sports Network’s That Other Pregame Show. “He’s clueless as a defensive coordinator. He lacks attention to detail. He lacks feel on how to call a game. Some of the calls he used to call when I was playing were head-scratching. They were so bad, I used to change them, like, ‘We’re not running that.’ And we’d get off the field and he would ask, ‘Why did you change the call.’ (I would say), ‘Because that’s just a dumb call. That’s why I changed it.’

“For years he has always made excuses. One minute it was ‘We’re changing from the 3-4 and we don’t have the right personnel.’ Next minute it is salary cap. Next minute it is Mike Shanahan. Next minute it is injuries. Mike Shanahan recognized early that this guy does not know what he is doing. And he tried to help him out….And what does Jim Haslett do? He threw [Shanahan] under the bus just like he throws everybody under the bus, players and coaches included."

"He is a guy that does not know what he is doing,” Fletcher went on. “And the Washington Redskins — and Jay Gruden in particular — better watch his back and get Jim Haslett out of the door….Jay Gruden better get him out the door because he’s probably back stabbing Jay Gruden like he did everybody else –- like he did to Scott Linehan in St. Louis and like he did to Mike Shanahan in Washington….

“This is a guy that would take the ’85 Bears and turn them into a mediocre defense,” Fletcher said. “He is clueless. He has no idea what he is doing. Believe me, I had a front row seat for four years.”

I'll be shocked if it's not butler but don't be surprised if Tomlin steps in and changes thing more of a 4 man line

Have no idea which way Tomlin is going to go on this.

Ever since he was hired I said it's going to be one of Tomlin's biggest decisions to evaluate and Lebeau just kept hanging on and on and on...

The rumors can fly if we're headed towards a 4-3 now. We have no edge rushers, but the money is free at that spot now too so you can flood it with a few FA's and see what happens for a year or two.

We can move Jarvis Jones to a strong-side backer, keep Timmons in the middle and let Shazier develop as a WILL. We could even run multiple fronts if we can find that one true speed edge rusher on the weak side (which we don't have). Everything else we can probably find on the roster.

Lets say....if....Todd Bowles gets a HC job...that would leave the DC position open in AZ...it could be foreseeable that Arians would contact Pitt for permission to talk to Keith. If Pitt wants to go in a different direction it could grant Keith his option if Arians would agree to take Keith off their hands....Butler gets his DC gig with a familiar personality in AZ and Pitt goes after the man they want. No ill feelings for passover for a job. Everybody could win
