Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has named Dwayne Haskins as the starting quarterback for the final preseason game this Friday against the Carolina Panthers:

Steelers’ HC Mike Tomlin said QB Dwayne Haskins will start his team’s preseason finale Friday night against the Panthers.

This is exciting news, as much of Steeler Nation has been vocal about wanting to see him getting ready with the starting offense that is playing during these games. He has performed well to date, engineering multiple scoring drives between all three games thus far.

It will be exciting to see how the competition for the QB2 spot shakes out heading into the regular season. If Haskins can shine this Friday, he may just give himself the edge for the spot.

Ben and Rudolph will not play meaning, as some have been saying all along, Haskins is still just trying to make the team and has no shot at the backup job. I do think he will beat out Dobbs.

I'm guessing that the only reason Dobbs wasn't cut a couple of days ago was that they wanted to have two quarterbacks for Friday's game.

They also may try to get something for whoever doesn't make the team. This will be their audition.

I think this is a given. Haskins is a project for 2022. Low risk, high reward. But no impact on 2021 season outside of injury.

Dobbs I bet will be P.S., he sees the game well and offers well received input.

Hey Sean, god eye o[pener article, thanks.

I disagree about competition for #2 this season. Haskins will be back up #3 and now we just have to see how it plays out and hope injuries are not a factor.

Ben & Mason will be eating cheetos on the bench while Mr. Haskins battles it out.

I just heard Bouchette on the fan say that Carolina is starting their starters. So this will be good for Haskins and the O line
Depends on who all we have playing at WR and RB.

This is the most likely scenario, however the Brooke Pryor insight I found quite logical…

she speculated that Haskins is the riskier player at QB3… one of the reasons he got cut was he didn’t prepare for games, and while he looked ok in a vanilla offense in the preseason, there is no guarantee he will push himself to prepare as a 3rd qb…Dobbs, on the other hand prepares exquisitely and Ben loves his help breaking down defenses… Dobbs is the safer pick there… less upside, but a surer bet to be NFL ready on gameday if needed

the one thing to remember though is that Tomlin doesn’t usually depend on an emergency qb, though Covid may change that…

Haskins is probably locked in as the 3rd qb… but it’s probably not an absolute…

Good deal. Couldn't hurt....Unless his ankle is rolled up on.

Nice post and I can understand the reasoning but I still think Dobbs is not on the 53. (PS) They are looking for Haskins to directk\ly compete for the #1 (Ben retires) or #2 if Ben stays. That is for next year so they are going to continue to groom unless he shows otherwise. He will be the #3.

I agree… I just think that his preseason wasn’t as magnificent as his backers seem to think…

there are a lot of qbs that don’t really come into their own for four or five years… both of these guys could be a lot better than they have shown to date… but honestly, if they kept Dobbs over Haskins it would be less of a surprise to me than them cutting Brooks was… the guy was hellabroken down in wokeskin land… he wasn’t going to be a one offseason quick fix no matter how much the Fan wanted him to be…

Totally agree and HASKINS isn't on pace with Rudolf yet. The talking heads and their sheep like camp are trying to make it so there is conflict. Conflict brings clicks and it's all about the clicks.

My response to that logic is this. Dobbs has been in the league for years and is still eligible for the practice squad.

Haskins was rated by scouts as having every bit of the talent needed to be a top 5 pick, so that was never in question. His maturity has been.

Thinking back to Ben's rookie year, how many times have we had to go three deep at QB? Once in 2005 and again in 2009?

All due respect to Brooke Pryor, but you retain the guy that has flashed the potential in the preseason and not the guy you know that no one else is going to snag with a roster spot. I like Dobbs, but if you wanna pay a guy a NFL minimum deal to study the playbook, I'll work a 2nd job right now! Anywhere in the league!

Talent is going to win out. Haskins isn't in their plans this for 2021.
