Observations Pre-Season Game 2 vs Iggles....

OL-
Chuks going to make us miss Villanueva. Whiffed at second level run blocking and was getting all he could handle pass blocking. 😬

Dotson looked good to me I don’t see how he’s not starting game one.

Green is no Pouncey. I feel Finney starts the season at center and green hopefully comes around.

They did Trai dirty on that hold. Looks to be at the very least as good as DeCastro.

Haeg is underrated.

Banner looked good.
Finney looked great, but he's a guard on this team. JC is starting at center if Green is not.

Steelers had some pretty good QB play last night. Mason is still hesitant and doesn't command the offense like you want from a starting QB, but he can make some quality throws. Haskins settled in, threw some nice touch passes, and began to get comfortable.

I look forward to seeing Highsmith out there with the full set of starters because he is standing out right now. Imagine when defenses have to key in on guys like Watt and Heyward with Fitzpatrick roaming in the secondary.

The first-team OL stinks. A lot of talk how left tackle was Okorafor's natural side and he would be better. I'm just not seeing it. I don't know if Moore is ready, but I want to see what he can do against the starters. What I like most about Moore is he gets to the second level a lot. Green is up and down and it's hard to say what they can get from him early in the season. As I said in the other thread, I don't know what's going on between the coaching staff and Dotson, but you need your best players in the starting lineup. Dotson needs to be with the starting OL next practice and stay there. He was the one "sure thing" entering the season and they need to start acting like it.
Absolutely true.., the first line is a mess… Green needs to bulk up… okorafor isn’t doing well and for the record moore isn’t ready… tgere just isn’t a lynchpin there yet… its a problem if tgey don’t gel until midseason or something…

Moore may not be ready, but apparently Okorafor isn't either. If Tomlin can try to light a fire under Dotson by putting him with the second string, maybe he needs to do the asme with Okorafor. Ridiculous they are just handing him arguably the most important position on the line when he was their worst starting lineman last year.

Number 3, 26, and 87 made the squad last night...

Number 8's skills have diminished to the point that 44 should take his spot on the roster....how much money did we put in that guys pocket?
I'm still not sure what kind of knee injury Ingram suffered last year, maybe MCL but I had the feeling he is still treading lightly. Very vanilla pass rush but I wouldn't put to much into it.

Sorry, ment to add more. My impression is Ingram and coaches agree to take it easy, bull rush, cover the edge etc. Get acclimated. So far I agree that Jones should keep a spot but we've seen other pre season flash OLBS that amounted to nothing. Another 2 pre season games and a month before the season, Ingram will still be on the team.

Finney looked great, but he's a guard on this team. JC is starting at center if Green is not.
I think JC should start out of the gates. Green looks like he is having some ups and downs. LT and outside corner continue to be concerns for me. I am hoping the Steelers upgrade come final cuts.

I think if green isn’t ready at center they are ******… neither of their backups are worth a damn as a starter and they are gonna get obliterated up the middle

Green is the best talent they have at center. He's also a rookie. He's getting to the 2nd level and pulling really well. He just has to learn consistency, dude is going to be a player!

Also while I think Harris will be a good player.., this is why i wanted a starter at oline in the first round… ill bet there is at least one second or third round back that outperforms Harris if pur line collapses… you build line first then worry about skill piecves at rb

Yes all true but he is undersized and struggling with big players… he might be a year away

I was the same way. Harris and Freiermuth are both very good prospects, but I was all in on the OL in the draft and had wanted Jenkins (though I didn't know about the back injury and with that knowledge would've went in another direction), Humphrey, and Smith. KC got two of them so I'll be interested to see how they progress. Instead we are taking the 2008 approach by drafting weapons rather than lineman. Ironically, the 2008 team with that awful offensive line won a Super Bowl.

DL-
Loudermilk took a step forward. He could be a rotational guy this year. I was thinking his value wouldn’t show until 2022 but if he keeps playing like this I think he could get a hat come Sunday this year.

OLB-
Highsmith looked good again. Hot motor and quick first step. He’s making me feel better about Bud being gone.

Roche looks good off the edge but he’s a little lost in coverage. Really as expected never really being utilized in coverage before.

Jamir Jones looks hungry. He definitely wants to make the team. At this point I think it’s hard to cut him. But Watt, Ingram, Highsmith, and Roche are all ahead of him. I don’t see us keeping 5 OLB so maybe he makes it to the PS.

ILB-
Spillane was all over the place. I feel a little bad that he won’t start now that we got Schobert. But I think he’s earned playing time.

Bush looks like he’s 100% after that knee injury.

Gilbert was around the ball a lot and looked fast. Hopefully his back is good.

Buddy looks fast and I feel he and Gilbert are fighting it out for the 4th ILB position. I feel Buddy makes it over Gilbert.

CB-
Sutton got beat pretty bad by Watson luckily Hurts couldn’t connect. I personally think Pierre at RCB and Sutton at NB but that’s just my opinion.

Layne took advantage of a poorly thrown ball. Missed a few tackles though.

Maulet was around the ball a lot.

Pitts made a nice pick by jumping in front of the receiver.

S-
Tre Norwood took a poor angle on that big catch and run but besides that seemed to be in position.

Killebrew looks to be a solid backup to Edmunds.

WR-
Diontae Johnson looked in midseason form. Seems to have fixed that hands issue.

Bussey had some nice grabs. I feel the Steelers are looking for their 5th WR.

Anthony Johnson runs nice routes with good hands.

Sexton took a step back.

I heard that Tomlin already announced that Ben is starting the next game. Basically, that means we won't see Haskins against first-teamers because the last preseason game is usually all backups.

that may not be the case this year. The NFL took away a preseason game and there is a Bye week between the last preseason game and the regular season. Steelers have 16 days between their last preseason and week 1. We may see starters playing quite a bit in that last game. They should play over a half in that last game because that's a pretty long layoff if they sit.

Haeg is underrated.

Banner looked good.
I thought Haeg looked pretty good. I don't remember Banner playing at all, and I watched the game twice.

Offense:

Rudolph and Haskins were accurate for the most part. That being said, there are still a lot of short patterns in the gameplan, so their completion percentages should be high. Dobbs hurt his chances with the pick.

Moore was solid again. I know Leglue had a holding penalty, but otherwise he was decent at center, could make the practice squad with his versatility. Not sure why people think Hassenauer is starting material, he looks awful to me. Green had better learn how to block bull rushers, because he is getting blown in to the backfield regularly thus far. They should stop trying to pull Finney on counter plays, because he is too slow to get to the linebackers on the other side. Trai Turner may have been a pro bowler in the past, but he appears to be lost in this blocking system.

Was really impressed with the young corps of receivers, although it could have been that the Eagles' reserves were having major trouble with their zone defense.

Defense:

I cannot understand why they brought Wormley back. He's useless. Loudermilk made some nice plays again, although he was held in check a bit. I'm thinking he will make the team. Was hoping that Ingram would have more of an impact. I have no idea why they think Marsh is a competent NFL player. Buddy Johnson got very few snaps, for some reason, I'd like to see more of him.

Collectively, the secondary looks weak. Norwood took a bad angle and then got blown away on that long touchdown. Nothing else really stood out. Killebrew looked OK. Maybe they should consider moving Marcus Allen back to safety; he's not cutting it at inside linebacker, and he only weighs 215.

Special Teams:

My guy Shakur Brown was nowhere to be seen in coverage...maybe they wanted to give other players a shot. Berry punted too well for my liking -- I'm going to be really bummed if they insist on keeping him instead of Harvin.

Overall the Steelers' backups dominated the Eagles' backups, and they took control of the game on the ground, which was nice to see.

****, if we have a week off before the regular season, Ben needs action in both the remaining games. In recent years (probably the past 5 or so), he usually starts the season very rusty and his timing is off with his receivers. If they only give him a few series this week, I hope that's enough. With their schedule, they can't afford to give away a game or two to start the season.

Tomlin needs to see Snell is not the guy
He needs to see that the other Watt brother, Zeppo is his name I think, isn't the guy either and they're paying him a ****-ton of money to play special teams.

Not saying I called it but…

Every insider has pretty much said that Sutton was going to be outside in base and in the slot in nickel… I didn’t realize it was a surprise
It seems the Steelers are treating this week like the traditional third preseason game so it's not surprised they finally put their starting OL together and started putting Sutton in the slot and Pierre outside.
