Mike Tomlin Upset Over James Conner’s Departure

Expecting him to "carry the load" is unrealistic and contradicted by the facts.
He needs to be a #2 RB and limited to ten touches per game. If he's your #1 then your #2 is going to be playing a lot.

James Conner was a #2 RB who played above his grade for a short period of time. I most certainly rooted for him continously but his injury(s) pointed to him being a #2 playing above his grade and on the fild to much. Had he played at a #2 RB he would still be here and doing well. We knew BELL was leaving before the second tag, hell we should have been looking durring the first tag. Conner had to much history / health to be considered a #1 long term and as someone said he had injury "pre-cancer" as well.

I wish him the best on everything he is invovled in but now he is no longer a STEELERS player and we have moved on.

I could see it difficult to see Conner the person leave, and don't get we wrong, he is a talented player and may emerge if there is a better oline in AZ. But a bell cow work horse? If Mike Tomlin actually believes that, I would say that says a lot. And for 1.75 million, I think they could have got that deal done.

That's probably the most telling thing. I suspect Conner could have been worked with. But hey. I'm not in the FO. I'm just a guy.

Just a note here: At the time of his release they were up against the cap. Until Pouncy retired and DeCastro was cut they didn't have much room for season use (injury) & rookie class. That may have had something to do with his release FO decision.

well clearly it was a FO decision. But if you honestly believed the guy is a lead back why would you spend a 1st round pick and let him 🚶‍♂️for that amount of money. No you would make a move. And no one can tell me Tomlin has no input in this. If he seriously believed James Conner was a bell cow back he is still in B and G

Agree Sask, just pointing out $$$ was a small factor but ABILITY was the deciding factor. Tomlin can spin what ever way he wants but most know the difference between coach speak and reality....Tomlin has a lot of coach-speak in his vocabulary

Fully agree. Mike Tomlin likes James Conner. I like James Conner. How could you not like James Conner. So he spun it so he didn't have to look like a bad guy.

MT was also the guy with the biggest erection when scouting Harris maybe more than he was when he made it crystal clear he he was taking Timmons at 17 even had Revis fell, I just hope back then if Revis had fell that ownership would of override the pick.
He wanted Najee bad and I see him going with the mentality run him this year until the wheels fall off, hopefully, Snell is ready and Klemm gets this new OL to create a identity quick as nasty SOB

Think maybe tomlin felt as bad about james connor as he felt about HAVING to "not renew" long time pal Fichtner? This story stinks and tomlin is full of ****.
Agree the story stinks. But, since Tomlin isn't quoted as having spoken directly about it, it really stinks. I mean, this is literally like "My brother says he heard Tomlin say ...." or better yet "My brother said he heard from someone with the Steelers that Tomlin was .... " Talk about bullshit journalism. If you want the man's reaction, go to the source. Probably won't get his honest reaction, but at least your not publishing hearsay bullshit.

I like Connor he’s a Steeler for life represented himself, Steelers and football first class. I think out in Arizona, in a spread offense, that can create those little crease were he can get into secondary untouched he’ll kill. But in our offense I believe Harris will be better fit. Harris could player flanker right offense with right coaching. Big strong and can swerve make players miss… no swerve in Connor but god bless him he’s great guy. If bens up to it this offense could be special. Ben has the ability to make stars out players like Wallace, Holmes, AB, bell… last year it was claymore. If he can utilize harris’ talent Harris will be in pro bowl.

Tomlin loves the “dangerously average” they remind him of what he could have been IF he had realized his full potential

HCMCS, like Cowher before him, overvalues current players because "they know the system". It's more a matter that they don't want to train someone new and their ego tells them that their plays are better than everyone else's. Kinda like my company and their marketing plan, but I digress.
I've seen players who've been on several teams say that everyone has the same plays, they just have different names for them.
Remember Joe Haden was with us for half a week and instantly became our best DB even though he didn't "know the system".

Football is football. After that it comes down to strength/speed/talent

Unless you know what plays and what defense the other team is going to run, so there is that.
