Ever since the Pittsburgh Steelers signed Dwayne Haskins back on January 21st, both the media and Steeler Nation have not shied away from vocalizing their opinion on the former first round quarterback.

In recent weeks, there has been a lot of hype surrounding Haskins as his arrow started to point up. Whether it be him claiming he wanted to show the Steelers he loves football, or Ben Roethlisberger coming out and giving the young QB praise, which he almost never does, many people have been starting to look at Haskins as a potential diamond in the rough.

Regardless of his long-term outlook, people need to cool the jets on what to expect from Haskins in 2021. While he has immense talent, he is fighting an uphill battle to make roster let alone see the field.

The two quarterbacks he is battling on the depth chart, Joshua Dobbs and Mason Rudolph, both have several years on the Steelers roster and have appealing attributes. Rudolph was a 3rd round pick by the team and appears as though he is being groomed to be the heir apparent to their Hall of Fame quarterback. While Dobbs is a favorite of Roethlisberger as he calls him his second set of eyes on the sideline helping him in game.

Haskins on the other hand has flamed out with the team that took him 15th overall, granted in a terrible situation, had his work ethic questioned, and is now in a completely new offense with a new organization. He also has had very limited work with the team being very early in the offseason, so he hasn’t had much time to gain much ground on his competition.

Now, this isn’t to say Haskins won’t exceed all of our expectations and potentially become the next Steelers great quarterback, because I for one would love if that happened. But right now we all need to calm down and see if he is able to put the work in and first make the team as their third quarterback this season.

Due to the Steelers familiarity with Rudolph and the consistent improvement he has shown over the years, it is unlikely Haskins can win the backup job by the start of the regular season. So while I believe that if Haskins shows he is willing to put the work in and makes improvements throughout the year, he will have a chance to compete with Rudolph next season, I have a hard time having those same expectations in 2021.

What do yinz expect from Haskins this upcoming season? Comment below!

Hey Matt, good perspective and article, thanks

First off there is NO camp battle between Rudolf and Haskins, just not there as Rudolf is to far ahead for 2021 ( barring unjury ). Haskins has a shot against Dobbs but either of them could easily be Reulette wheel practice / 53 rostered. Pretty sure Dobbs has the "above the neck" needed but Haskins has the "below the neck" physical tools and somewhere the coaching has to figure out which one is needed.

I wonder if Coach Tomlin could take the two "back to the lab" and merge them into one...... ?

IMO, Haskins is a slower Ryan Leaf. Didn't think he would be good coming out of college. It was low risk, high reward pick up by us, so it was a good pick up.

This is a timely article because of all the hype Haskins is receiving. I think his upside this year is third string and at least showing growth. The scouting reports coming into the NFL left a lot to be desired. I hope he succeeds and maybe we do see a good battle between him and Rudolph next year.

Haskins will make the team. That's about all I'm willing to predict. All the folks pushing the hype seem to ignore the fact that Sullivan has to completely rebuild him; vision, pocket awareness, lower body mechanics, confidence.. pretty much everything except his throwing motion. Sorry, but that's not something that gets accomplished in just OTAs and minicamp. Hell, it won't be accomplished in Latrobe either. Plus, Haskins has to be willing to put all his bad habits behind him and actually work/buy in to the process.

Will it all work out? Who knows ... But, it would be a pretty cool chapter in the Steelers' history if it did.

If he is that much of a project, he probably is best suited to be on the practice squad this season ....

Rudolph maybe has a chance to amount to a credible NFL starter. Dobbs, c'mon. Maybe more like a coach.

And that's a possibility too. My thoughts are that they've seen enough of Dobbs and they keep bringing him back to "compete and fail".. i.e. to push the other guy just enough to make him work for the spot.

Mason is the clear back up. He is the best chance we have on our roster as a guy ready to the over the organization if something happens to Ben.

It would be a good story if a former top 15th overall who is cut at a young age, makes it big. but very unlikely

I actually thought Haskins ran a good bit in college but running over 5 seconds in the 40 is super slow. Was he injured at the combine or something? Dude will struggle to beat Dobbs for a roster spot but definitely won't unseat Rudolph this year or even next year if he truly is that slow with little explosion and questionable accuracy (the more I read).

If I temper my expectations, I would be forced to go on the negative side of zero.

There's a lot that has to be done with that fella. I don't care how bad Washington was, it's how you handle adversity in a bad situation.

Meet Mr. Dobbs, our soon to be newest staff member (after final roster cuts). He'll put that rocket engineering degree to good use as Lead Equipment Manager with a focus on proper ball inflation for best possible throwing aerodynamics. This will be a position in which he can still serve as Ben's second set of eyes without wasting a roster spot on him. This will afford DH a chance to be stashed om the roster, albeit without a helmet on game days...that is, unless something tragic happens. Coach T loves "pedigree" and I suspect he will be very reluctant to cut DH unless he just opens a can of suck so bad that he spills it on several teammates.

Temper expectations!?!?

Another overhyped Steeler....similar to Devin Bush.....but this kid hasn't even suited up with the Steelers yet!

Show me something on the field first....then we can talk about expectations

Yeah, Haskins had some really impressive numbers at OSU: 103 carries for 194 yards.

Haskins has never been known for his speed. and many here are reading to much into this RPO crap in the nfl. CANADA's offense is more designed on one or two reads with movement to help get the match ups they want. I think his reads are pre-snap but obviously real time action as well (i'm no expert but I did have a Klondike Resses bar last night). Haskins doesn't need to be a "lamar" fast but he does need to be a way faster than "lamar" decision maker.

I see third string / PS (practice squad) and nothing more / nothing less.

Haskins should have stayed in college another year but his youth is a benefit right now. He just turned 24 so maybe he can grow out of his immaturity. I feel Rudolph easily wins the backup spot but Haskins wasn’t brought in for that. He has been brought in to fight for #3 and with Dobbs this year. If he sticks then this season will be to see if we need to bring in a high pick next year to fight it out with Rudolph for #1 or can Rudolph, Haskins and mid round draft pick on the team next year.

Haskins is trying to win the #3 spot this year and the #2 spot next year. He will not see the field except for injuries. Rudolph will be the starter next year, and will have to lose that spot for Haskins to even be considered.

Yeah, what expectations? I am for the signing of Haskins, because...why not? It's a futures deal, for crying out loud. If he doesn't make the team, so what? But he has some talent, whether or not it ever comes to fruition, who knows? Rather find that out on a futures deal than a multi-million dollar contract.

Can’t wait for pre season to
See what he can do. Other then that I hope
We don’t see him at play during the regular season.

I'm not expecting **** from Haskins

if he flames out...who gives a ****, if he beats out Dobbs and Rudolph well he was a former first round pick..and neither of them is the future of this team

If he somehow becomes the player he was expected to be and takes over when Ben retires. Well ****, what a great roll of the dice the front office took

We will hardly get to see him in the preseason. Tomlin plays the #2 for 3.5 Quarters and gives the #3 man garbage time. How many years did we have to watch Landry Jones all of the preseason and hardly ever get to see the #3 or #4 play at all? First two games needs to be equal playing time for all positions to properly evaluate personnel. Tomlin goes into the pre-season games with a pre-determined depth chart and seemingly waivers from it regardless of the pre-season results.
