To me. This is a college guy who was one and done at more than a couple schools. No NFL OC experience. Now that could work in his favour at least in the beginning they are likely to be unpredictable and he might be able to use some smoke and mirrors to revive the run game with a high quality back at his disposal. ..........but here is the deal. You got a QB going into his 18th season. If coach college wunderkind doesn't get it going quick and progress it will become a total **** show.

It's not going to be because of the OC, it'll be because Roethlisberger looks a year older, the offensive line stinks, and the receivers remain inconsistent.

Maybe so. But one thing is for damn sure for whatever reason it busts they will be looking at the guy with little pro resume calling the plays.

The guy has been a consultant for multiple pro teams looking to utilize his stuff...

His lack of tenure is because A. He gets better offers after good seasons and B. He is a bit of an ******* and butts heads with head coaches doing things he disagrees with... he isn’t a yes man...

So let me tell yall where this thread is heading. Ben is old, fat, slow, weak, and will suck balls this season regardless. We should have kicked him down the road and let Mason show us what he can REALLY do.
Cmon haters, don't let me down!!!

Well B is part of what I'm talking about. If he cannot make these guys better and quick it better be Tomlin he butts heads with cause if it's Ben it will be a full on **** show. 18 year pro vs. College OC. If they are not seeing it the same way. Look out.

What a shitload of Doom and gloom

You new here?
I hear yaz and I'm in the more positive BOAT of "time will tell but until then" mode.

Ben could come out just as easily firing on all cylinders with OC suppling the grease. Last year's OC really sucked **** and showed how little he had in creativity. Matt Canada at least has some creativeness and looks to get match-ups through his play calling. That in itself is an improvement.

ADD in the RB and run game additives to improve (OL coach, OC who has more than 6 plays, FO pushing run, etc.) and I'm seeing more positive than gloom.

100% exactly what I'm saying. It could go really well (boom) or really ****** bad (bust). Its not gonna be in the middle somewhere. And if you really had to throw your money on it, with the thinness of this roster, which way are you going?

Lets see how many balls Diontae drops this year. Lets see if we try to sling it 40-50 times a game. Lets see if they can open up rushing lanes for the rookie. Lets see if waiting til the 3rd round to replace Pouncey was the right move. Lets see if a guy moving over from RT to LT can play the position well.

The same plays got scouted and stopped. We were shut down after starting the season off with a record start. They need to adjust as the season goes on and not keep running the same offense. If we are one dimensional we will be dead on arrival.

This will be a bittersweet year since it should be Ben's last. Lets hope it ends with another Lombardi.

The wife and I went for a short trip to the Bay this past weekend. We were watching the Steelers Philly game at a bar there, it was being replayed, it was awesome. First, let me state how much I miss sitting at a bar with a beer and snacks and watching a ******* football game, couple that with the fact that there was a rockin band there, and the breeze off the bay and it was pretty much heaven. Now, back to the topic, the offense I watched in that game was nothing like what we saw late in the year. The team was able to run, pass, and a LOT of motion kept the defense wondering what was next, and there were several longer passes mixed in with the 3 to 5 yard stuff. Something changed near mid season where it was ALL 3 yard dumps 1.5 seconds from the snap, and we stopped using motion to disguise anything. Let's hope they get back to the **** that was working this year.

The smoke and mirrors of motion helps. But in the end it comes down to can you line up against your man and win. Once that became common knowledge this offense was reduced to what it became. They either dropped 7 and made life difficult or brought quick pressure resulting in the 4 yard passes. Most importantly, 3rd and 1 became a known passing down for this team. They kept the Assistant Oline coach and promoted the QB coach to OC. Let that sink in for a bit. Like if Canada has the answers, someone tell me why the **** Fichtner wasn't fired mid season. Its not unheard of. Ravens won a SB like that. Same with ole' sweet feet.

For better or worse, the Steelers don't fire Coordinators mid season. Hell, they don't fire them mid-contract. They either let the contract run out and don't renew, or they ask them to "retire". I think it's about the money.

That's not the Steeler way, firing coaches mid-season that is. Canada was brought in to help/possibly replace Fichtner and at some point, Canada's influence on the play designs were removed (Motions and shifts) Could be because of Ben, could be Fichtner said it's my way or the highway...who knows? But I truly believe Canada was hired to come in and be a hot swap for OC if Randy didn't perform.

It's common knowledge that I'm a fan of his work. He designs his schemes and play designs to fit the personnel and he is outstanding at making adjustments during the games. How he and his coaching translates to the NFL still remains to be seen, obviously.

I don't disagree with what your saying, but I'm getting somewhat tired of the Steelers way. If you have lost faith in a guy you dump him on the spot. I said at the time if I'm Tomlin I'm going into the film room with the oline coach, the running back coach and the OC and I'm saying each of you is gonna tell me why we can't run the ball and at least one of you is not coming out of this room with a job.

We haven't been to camp. We haven't played in a pre-season game. And, the 17 game season hasn't started yet we suck already. Barring major injuries (that doom most teams), this team will be very competitive. No one can cover our crop of WR's, TE's and RB now. Our D is still going to be good. And our line will do just fine. I think this O will put up 30+ per game if the O-line keeps Ben upright and is even average in the run game. Harris will make average look that much better. They don't need to be great. As long as we have a run threat, teams can't key on our passing game like they did the second half of last year. No one could cover Claypool as a rookie. Imagine what he, JuJu, Deontae, Washington, Ebron and Muuuth will do. You can't cover them with a running threat. I personally can't wait for the season to start and for Ben to shut people up like he did last year coming off surgery that most thought his career was over and he basically carried us to an 11-0 record to start the season. This year, he will be even better.

Oh, I agree with you 100%. Mike Tomlin isn't a leader of men, period. And, I'm fairly certain that if MT grew a set of balls and wanted to fire a coach mid-season, ARTII would put the kibosh to that plan. Weakness abound!

"If" the mandate from ARII is that no one under contract gets fired/let go until their contract has expired, then Tomlin doesn't have the leeway to make that statement. The ****** part is that if that's the case, the OC, Line Coach and RB Coach all knew it. So, what was their incentive to do better?
I don't know for a fact that ARII actually has made that mandate. But, looking at how Haley and Fichtner were allowed to stick around until their contracts expired and how LeBeau and The Bruce "retired" instead of getting fired, there's evidence that this is the way they're operating.

Seems everyone still has to but Ben as the bad boy. Tomlin does not seem to want to change things up so ending of every year in the last what, five we sink. All these passes blamed on Ben but how many catches that should have been made to continue a drive was dropped by our receivers. This year was the perfect storm for Tomlin he could have brought new blood and eyes to this offense and he choose not to. The reality is the perfect storm for Tomlin this year if we do poorly blame Ben. There has been very few times if ant Tomlin stood up and said this is on me. Would be nice if we had the feeling Tomlin took control and said as mentioned by another he looked at film with these coaches and put the fear of God into them but I don't think any of us see this in Tomlin. Last year the weakness came out on the Steelers and the only in the mix for blame is Ben. No coaches, no other players, Ben. Tomlin stayed behind doors.

I will say this if the mandate is to not fire incompetent assistants and coordinators mid season because of money that is pretty ******. What does an NFL offensive line coach make 350k. That's 175 at mid season. That isn't even a practice roster scrub. And if it's about feelings give me a ****** break.

When they tacked on years to Tomlin's contract and he hires the assistant offensive line coach from the year before and the qb coach to be the OC. Zero new eyes like you said. Pretty hard for me to get excited for the season.
