Leading up to the 2021 NFL Draft starting on April 29th, we will be releasing several draft profiles of prospects who could potentially see themselves on the Pittsburgh Steelers. Next up…

Trey Hill (IOL) Georgia, Junior

The Need:

Long-time Steelers center, Maurkice Pouncey announced his retirement early this offseason. That move leaves a big hole on the offensive line for the Steelers to fill. The team brought back a former Steeler B.J. Finney on a 1-year deal a little over a week ago, but the team still needs to find a long-term replacement for Pouncey at the center position. Based on reports, the Steelers are already showing some level of interest in Hill.

Georgia center Trey Hill says he's talked with the Steelers "a lot" and also says he models his game partially after the Pouncey twins. Both Kevin Colbert and Mike Tomlin were at UGA's pro day today.

Hill measures in at 6’4″ and 330 lbs. He is projected as a 4th-5th round pick. Hill started at center, but showed some versatility by starting several games at guard during his time with the Bulldogs as well. Hill is most likely a Day 3 option if the Steelers pass on the position in the earlier rounds of the draft.

Pros:

  • Large center who stands his ground
  • Experienced: Played in 36 games in 3 years at Georgia
  • Difficult for opponents to bull rush due to his size and strength
  • Natural Leverage
  • Extremely Effective on Double Teams
  • Versatility on the Interior Offensive Line
  • Certified People Mover in the Run Game
  • Does an excellent job recovering when it seems he initially has been beaten
  • FINISHER in the run game

Cons:

  • Lacks Athleticism
  • Average Football IQ, Can React Slow to stunts inside
  • Lunges at Defenders occasionally, becoming unbalanced.
  • Needs to Be more consistent with hand placement, he can be sloppy with his hands at times
  • Lacks Lateral Quickness
  • Technique regressed slightly from 2019

One of my favorite centers guy is a mauler.

Unless the Center is a top prospect—not a center in 1st round this year. Pouncey was one of the rare 1st round pick Centers who are top prospects.

Based on your observations, he seems to fall into the 2nd round

Really not a first round C in this draft. Hill could be anywhere from bottom of two to bottom of four. Not sure the Steelers would take one before 3 unless they loved one. I am thinking T,RB, OLBer, CB, and QB would get first glances. A lot of needs this year so really they should have no trouble going BPA.😅
