It is being reported this morning by Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that the Pittsburgh Steelers are preparing to bring back guard/center B.J. Finney, pending a physical. Finney was previously with the Steelers from 2016-2019 but ultimately decided to leave for greener pastures signing a 2-year $8M contract in March of 2020 with the Seattle Seahawks. Finney was later traded to the Cinncinnati Bengals in October of 2020 for a 7th round draft pick. Finney saw 0 snaps in the 2020 season after playing 33% of the snaps for the Steelers in 2019. The move should come as no surprise as the Steelers desperately need depth on the interior of the offensive line with the retirement of Maurkice Pouncey as well as the up coming free agency for guard Matt Feiler. Finney should provide a cheap flexible option to provide not only depth at guard, as well as be in the mix for the starting center role. Moves like this are common for the Steelers as they have a history of bringing back veterans on team friendly deals, so be on the lookout for more moves like this.

Finney is at the team's South Side facility today but first has to pass a physical. He was released by the Bengals last Friday. https://t.co/kyJOSVBJCv

No brainer for depth player with familiarity of offense, team mates, and organization

Looks like Finney will be our starter with Haffenfeffer (no clue how to spell his last name) as the backup. Means they don't have to draft a center early, if at all but will probably draft one in the mid to late rounds. Then again, he and Haffenfeffer may battle for the starting spot.

For depth purposes then sure. He was solid when he was here but seems like it was years ago and honestly couldn’t even start for the Bengals. I know being out of shape had something to do with it but I’m not exactly jumping for joy. Would still like to see us draft one of the top centers from this draft which seems to have quite a bit of quality centers.

Wonder what happened in Seattle and Cincy? Couldn’t crack the starting lineup with the Bengals. That’s concerning!

Couldn’t workout because of COVID. No OTAs, and Training camp was very limited. No preseason either. He couldn’t get into football shape until his position was already given to another player. Got traded for Dunlap and then went on COVID IR after arriving in Cinci.

Definately need to keep an eye on the draft rnd 3

Hopefully for depth only and I sure hope this isn't Colbert's idea of filling the need for a starting center.

What this does is make it so the Steelers don't have to reach on a C in the draft. They can BPA their approach- like usual.

**** signing in terms of quality. This is about depth and we lack that at Center. Finney was a sieve when he filled in for Pouncey.

Ike, thank you. This makes me feel better about this signing. I had wondered what happened. When he was here he did a good job and was pretty versatile.

I’m thinking maybe Trey Hill in round 3 or if we are lucky to have Meyers drop that far. Dickerson should go round 1 but with injuries I could see him dropping to the 2nd. Another guy I like is Menet and think he could be had in the 4th or 5th round.

Exactly. They have 2 guys now that can play C and get them through the season if needed. Even if they drafted a C early, there is no guarantee he would start. This is a smart signing. The bad thing is it shows we aren't going to go for a little more expensive FA C that could start for a few years. This is a stop-gap unless one of our guys steps up and plays well this year.

If the Steelers offensive line starts the year with Okorafor, Finney, and Banner as starters on the offensive line this offseason would be a massive failure.

I’m not ready to write Halfanhour off as starter just yet. The guy deserves to get coached up as the starter in training camp and I would like to see more of him. He’s got the size to be a roadgrater. I like the addition of Finney. Smart depth move

BJ‘s contract had a clause regarding his signing bonus pertaining to team workouts. He didn’t want to miss any of the criteria’s and lose that $2 mil, but with the crazy offseason last year, workouts weren‘t...well, really team workouts.

Also both Haus and BJ are better than Sean Mahan. I still have the shakes when I remember him 'starting' at center...
Mahan......easily worst FA signing by Colbert. Someone %$&* the bed on that recommendation. At least we got a pick back for him.

They were 11-2 when he did.

As long as he is seen as depth I'm happy with the signing, still need a top prospect in the draft (round 2-3) to play C
