To be blunt, it was not a stellar year for the passing attack for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Case in point, Ben Roethlisberger had one of the lowest intended air yards per attempt in the league, at just 6.9 yards.* Air yards, for those new to advanced analytics, is the distance the football travels from the […]

VERY good breakdown Brad, well worth the read, thank you.

Near the end you talk about defenses moving more players back into coverage due to lack of running game. I feel stronger in the fact that defenses moved Personel closer to line of scrimmage due to the NO running game. They knew that if they flood the box the time to throw was less and the chance of knock down or tackle was better than sitting back due to the small amount of time BEN R. Would have. Our blocking scheme and commitment to change anything was lacking at best. Ben's seemingly less mobility didn't help either.

With new OC and OL coach (& assistant) I think both these facets can be changed and better outcome to be expected. We will run the ball, every action the team has made indicates that so now we just have to let the remainder pieces follow, a LT and upgraded RB would help.

I skimmed. I'm not a deep analytics guy self-admittedly. If I was going to look at anything about the Steelers offense it was that they clearly at least in my mind believe they could get one or two yards on the ground when they needed it and the opponents started to really pick up on that about 2/3 of the way through the season. That fact skews all statistics and analytics to me.

If anything it shows a steady decline. I am curious what those stats were in the playoff loss.

So where does the blame lie, Ben who when needed threw down the field, Offensive paly calling that kept the underneath passes till way late in game. Tomlin with a lack luster game plain and did nothing to change the plan in a game till late. A running game that was non factor , or a running blocking scheme that could not pick up the two and three yards consistent in any game. Lot of questions, seems to be no answers.

The short quick stuff worked early, so did the run game, as teams caught on they adjusted, we never did. We do what we do, remember. I don't think the Oline could hold up anyways, I think we may have lived and died with that offense because the Oline had trouble blocking for any longer than 2 seconds, Ben was getting hit a ton if he held the ball over 2 seconds.

Yep...

Not having a running game to lean on....killed us...
Bottom line...done deal.
