The Steelers hired the greatest coach in NFL history and changed the Steelers from the laughingstock of the league to the greatest dynasty in NFL history. Chuck Noll changed not only the Steelers but one could argue the entire city of Pittsburgh. Thank you Mr. Noll

I read this and said 'Wow, 52 years ago." and then realized I was almost 2 years old when he was hired. I'm getting old.

Actually, the Steelers hired Chuck Noll on January 27, 1969. I know this 1) because it's my birthday (Literally BORN to be a Steelers fan and 2) Google/Wikipedia

At age 37, Noll was named the 14th head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers on January 27, 1969, after Penn State coach Joe Paterno turned down an offer for the position. At the time of his hiring, he was the youngest head coach in the NFL.

Also the Steelers say so themselves.

I laugh at this!

Not at a flat out "laugh" response yet for me... .....but I did "chuckle" a little myself...

However I do remember delivering the Pittsburgh Press one day and the headline read "Joe Who?"

it was 10 miles to school, and the blizzards were during summer school...winters were even worse

Not 10 miles but it was 2 each way...

Jackson St/highland park to Sacred Heart Elementary/shadyside every day!

Come hell or high water!
And the worst of it was getting thru East Liberty with your lunch money still in your pocket!

No way these soft kids of the last 10 years or so would do even a tenth of that today!

My dad was born and raised in East Liberty ... quite a few years ago, he told me, "It was a really different place back then." Blue collar, but good neighborhood, mixed races but mainly Irish Catholic and Polish Catholic families.

Italian Americans also! :)

When I was growing up there in the 70's...East liberty was not a very nice place..
Some cool spots to go like Peabody High (now Obama Academy), Ventos' Pizza, Islay's, Sears, Deluca Lanes....but rough man...

Learned that life was not all peaches and cream in East Liberty...
East Liberty took me "knee high to a man".......one can say..

Some complained about Chuck Noll staying around to long but I can say he was welcomed as long as he wanted to stay due to his amazing everything he brought to change this storied franchise from 40+ years of the bottom to the best dynasty ever.

I did for ******* sure. First two years on our farm before we got a jeep with a snowplow for our 1/2 mile private road. I walked that **** in waist deep snow to reach my bus stop.. I don't miss that **** and my pampered son will never know how good he really has it...haha

Chuck stocked Cowher with a good team before he left. Cowher carried that torch well.
