Steelers Finalizing Deal With Matt Canada

I hear yaz Hoot and Like I said I'm pretty sure that is why they went with Canada. I know BEN's familararity had to factor in. The biggest reason I wanted outside hire is it would be totally fresh and possibly the OC would be less apt to fall to Tomlin's conservative approach. Canada may be slightly conditioned but I'm hoping for a more open offense but not a college offense.

So here is the proof needed in the hire the OL coach first as they say.

Salute the nation

I mean Canada basically got fired from LSU for telling their coach his way sucked... lol

I like him even more now.

**** we got Matt and Claypool, and Canada got Martavis.

I say we got the better of that deal.

whats the delay they hired a te coach have interviewed 1 or 2 pplk for OL does Mt wantto see who hires as ol so they can implement a heavy ground game. With all our needs cant draft Harris but mid rnds UGA Zamir White 6"0 215 is perfect watched his 2019 and 2020 highlights runs like the non fat Bell and has home run break away speed as well.

Well, according to Dulac, the Steelers are talking to 53 yr old Mike Sullivan to be their QB Coach.
Not sure I like that. As some have noted, it's time to start bringing in some younger position coaches. Fresh ideas, eyes, etc. And, I can't think of a decent QB that Sullivan helped develop. Eli was already established when became the Giants QB Coach.
No more old retreads.

That is for creative thinking. Like a OC or DC position. But for a QB coach you like someone who has been there and done that on the highest stage. Someone who knows how to squeeze the most out of a QB. I think Sullivan fits that description. Just don't let him coordinate and I think he will be fine. (He wasn't too good at that)

My thought(s) were more along the lines of wanting some younger position coaches because there are only so many ways this Canada hiring turns out:
1. He's good. So good that he gets a HC offer
2. He's good, but gets that "wanderlust" feeling and moves on.
(In either of the above, you'd like to have some young, up and coming, motivated positions coaches that have learned his offense and have wrinkles of their own to add to it, as potential OC candidates)
3. He sucks and is kept until his "contract runs out".
(If that's the case, by all means, hire all the old, retread position coaches you want. We'll be right back here doing it again soon).

Older coaches bring experience. Like Drake who was a wonderful addition. Risks come just as much with young and inexperienced.

I get what you're saying. Still, wouldn't mind having at least one "up and coming" guy. Older coaches bring experience, but they also tend to bring stale "This is the way it's always been done" thinking. Now, some folks would say that Canada is our one innovator and that's enough. I'd like to see at least one young guy, maybe as an assistant position coach on offense and the same on defense. Heck, at one point The WFT had both Sean McVay and Matt LaFleur as young assistants. We always tend to go with the older guys.

How does one go from a defensive back in college and defensive coach to eventually coach NFL QBs? He may be a great guy, but there are lot of young former QBs can bring so much to a team in terms of innovation and scheme. The NFL is trending toward the college game and I'd rather be on the forefront with a "risky" hire as opposed to a safer, older coach.

Some coordinators are just better positional coaches, as some head coaches are better coordinators. You can teach but perhaps you aren't an X and O guy. I dunno I might be in the minority but I see him as a potential solid hire. But then again I am not sure who is the other candidates.

He has a defensive background. Just not sure how that evolves into being a QB coach. In nearly 30 years of coaching he only has 4 years experience as a QB coach. Again, I'm not saying it would be a bad hire, but this isn't a guy that elevates your coaching staff or help bringing your offense to the modern age.

Yeah but those two stints as a QB coach brought OC jobs afterwards. So we can say he was good as a QB coach..

Both his stints as OC were bad as he was in charge of one of the worst offenses in the league. QB coaches should be the opportunity to cultivate the next round of OCs. We're likely going to be breaking a young QB into the lineup soon and I'd rather have a guy prepared to develop the skills and implement the ideas of a modern NFL offense than an old school coach who hasn't shown any indication of developing any young QBs.

I have two to three others I like better but he seems QB coach capable. I would like the Chargers or Texans QB coach. Pep would be an attractive hire for sure. Not sure when Kelly will be available but I would assume that a new coach would want his likes.
