Alabama hiring Bill O'Brien as OC

I mean im sure his cheatriots background might help him in recruiting the huge college program way....

It's actually a great hire. I would have loved the Steelers to get him. O'Brien is a really good offensive coach. What went wrong in Houston was him getting the GM job after being at odds with the old GM. He did do a good job developing Watson and contrary to popular belief, he was right to deal Hopkins.

They couldn't possibly pay both Hopkins and Watson and Hopkins was actually hurting Watson's development because he targeted him so much. After some early struggles, Watson adjusted to not having Hopkins and started spreading the ball around more and the offense got a lot better. Watson holds a grudge but O'Brien did well for him.

O"brien has lots of college experience. Not only at Penn State but he had other college jobs as well. He's not a great recruiter but at Bama that won't matter at all. He can just be a playcaller and have tons of weapons.

people forget that Sarkisian was a disgraced alcoholic when Bama hired him. Kiffen was also down on his luck career wise. This fits Saban's pattern of hiring an experience successful coach that is out of favor.

besides, with that much talent does it even matter who calls the plays? Saban won't let the OL and run game go to ****, so just about anybody will have success calling plays for Bama.

Saban was a bad coach once... Pete carrol was the fifth worse coach id ever seen in his first two stints as head coach in the nfl... and the thing is you can be acgreat Oc and a miserable head coach and vice versa...

Having said that he did a miserable job in Houston and should never get that much power again.. his trades were idiotic and universally panned.. coaches should never have that much say in roster construction... Weirdly enough they are almost never good at It... too much grass is greener **** and trading picks for players....

Bill O'Brien is going to be a head coach in college again within the next three years.

I think O'Brien is a quality HC.. he is not a good GM. Is he best buddies and friends with all the players? No, but I'm ok with.

All the players love Tomlin cause he lets them do what they want and he can be their buddies. It's a fun little atmosphere.

having watched a lot of Texans' games (since I live in the area) He sucked as a head coach also.

Aw, bullshit. You don't know that.

This is what I can't stand when we talk Tomlin. If you want to talk about his game plans, putting LBs on WRs or whatever, that is fair game. You and I do not know what goes on in the locker room.

I know from watching just a little of hard knocks is O'Brien seems like one of those guys who has a little bit of fake tough. Throwing f bombs in there when they don't need to be put in there. You know, instead of saying I'd like mayo on my sandwich, it had to be I want f'in mayo on my sandwich. Guys see through that crap.

I'll take that back then. I just know him from PSU, I thought he did a good job with that team.

I mean look at some of the players off the field antics with Tomlin.. yes, they are pretty free to do what they want but yeah, maybe I'm wrong about BOB.

I don't know. We look at everything in a vacuum. Every team has players doing stupid stuff, but we only focus on the Steelers. This ain't the 1950s anymore, when a coach had that kind of power. We think of the '70s maybe as that kind of era, but Ernie Holmes was shooting at helicopters in 1972 and the coach was one of the best ever.

Tomlin needs to go, of that I agree. I just try to keep it at the crap I see on the football field as opposed to going down a rabbit hole of what I cannot see.

Begrudgingly, I agree w/ you...

I was talking with a guy at lunch I work with. Plays in a yearly golf tournament run by Penn State Schuylkill. Anyway, he was talking to the center that played at PSU under O'Brien. He is from Orwisburg and was at the tournament. My friend, who didn't like O'Brien either, asked the former center what he thought of him. Anyway, the former player said nothing but good things about O'Brien. So maybe I am way off here.
