If they decide to activate Dobbs, he would be the 3rd QB. As I understand it, if the 3rd QB enters the game, the 1st QB cannot return.

Now, is there an exemption on that if the 3rd QB and the 1st QB are on the field together? Or am I wrong from the get-go?

This is correct. If you bring the emergency 3QB into the game, you can not use QBs 1 or 2 for the remainder of that game. There are 2 options to utilize Charlie Batch in a game.

1. List Mason as the 3rd QB, and if Ben gets hurt, you put him in and takes the Dobbs package out of the game.
2. Dress all 3 QBs and sit a RB. In this instance it would probably be McFarland.

Personally, I like option 1.

I thought that rule was booted awhile back?

in 2011 3rd QBs were eligible to come in and out at will. They stopped it after that year. I looked up the rule and didn't know it only mandated 3 QTRs of play for making the 1st and 2nd QBs ineligible:

Teams will be permitted an Active List of 45 players and an Inactive List of eight players for each regular-season and postseason game. Provided, that if a club has two quarterbacks on its 45-player Active List, a third quarterback from its Inactive List is permitted to dress for the game, but if he enters the game during the first three quarters, the other two quarterbacks are thereafter prohibited from playing.[3]

In the 4th QTR you can freely sub in and out the 3rd QB.

Personally I like option 0, cause I don't think that package is worth F' All. I'd rather see Wright active if they choose to kick with Boswell than make Dobson active Sunday.

Dress 3 QBs and sit one of the DL who plays sparingly, like Carlos Davis or Buggs.

But again, dressing 3 QBs isn't the issue. If you play the 3rd QB, you cannot let the 1st or 2nd back in the game. (Unless, it's the 4th quarter, I guess. But one would hope they don't need to rely on trickery that late in the game to get a 1st down...)

I don't see it being an effective method to utilize Dobb's skills. Unless, as Cope suggested you promote Dobbs to #2 QB and demote Rudolph to #3 Emergency QB. Then, I guess you could put Dobbs in as you like and have Mason there in case of disaster.

No idea what you guys are talking about but let me clear it up for you.

1 -- there is no such thing as an emergency quarterback any more. The Steelers have Dobbs inactive on GameDays. He can't play. He's in his street clothes.

2 -- if Dobbs is activated he can play at any time he wishes. He's active. That's it.

You're thinking of how things used to be.

The 3rd qb rule was just for qbs not on the active roster... it was a special designation so an inactive player could be used in an emergency...it was replaced by a 46th roster space. Any player active for the game may take snaps at qb at any time with no penalty

You said it clearer than I did!

Was trying to see what happened with Saints vs. San Francisco

Taysom Hill played earlier in the game when Brees was injured (3rd Qtr). Winston played QB majority of the remainder of game. Hill only played again in 4th QTR.

So you take the risk of what happens if Ben is hurt and when if you’re trusting Mason

Thanks 81, I had the old rule:

The rule was abolished for the 2011 season. There is now no third quarterback exception and the active roster has been increased from 45 to 46.

So the only option would be to keep all 3 QBs active or go with Dobbs and Ben and sit Rudolph like Wig said.

Its kind of funny... the 3rd QB rule was created because of a situation that led to a team losing both of its Qbs back in the day. It allowed a team to utilize an inactive player as an emergency QB ... however because teams were worried about coaches abusing it they set up the rule that if a qb came in before the 4th quarter it made the other two ineligible to play...

People bitched about it so in 2011 they just decided to scrap it and give the teams an extra active roster spot for gamedays.... so coaches immediately used the extra spot on everything but an extra qb and we are right back to where we were before the rule lol

Great Idea and then one wouldn't have to worry about a SLAP fight on the sidelines................
