Colin Dunlap and John Steigerwald? There's a huge outcry by them and fans on twitter to dress Dobbs and have special packages for him. I mean do you really want to pull Ben from a playoff game for freaking Josh Dobbs???

On a limited basis, why not? Give other teams something to think about, work on and dedicate time to.

What I wouldn't do is the way Fichtner did it yesterday. That was stupid, pulling Rudolf after a big throw. What was more stupid is not having Dobbs in for the 2 pt conversion. To me, that is the perfect spot for some of those packages. Or a 3rd and short here and there.

if you pull Ben for Dobbs, you're basically telling the defense we're running the ball in some form, because if you're pulling Ben to have Dobbs throw, that's idiotic at best.
Dobbs isn't Slash or El, he's not a WR.

It isn't like Dobbs blew the game up.

For me no if Ben is incapable of beating the clowns move on. As we know gadgets don't last long in route to SB dreams.

Maybe if say Dobbs had season long reps like Hill for the Saints.

But the risk of turnover with a short body of work for me is too great compared to the award which looked like in the Browns game was...not much.

Yes. We haven't been able to get a yard on 3rd or 4th down for most of the season. If this helps, and it showed it can, then why the **** not. It's another wrinkle for teams to prepare for and Dobbs can pitch the ball, hand it off, run it or throw it. I think what we saw yesterday and how it gained yards, you have to have it in your arsenal with how bad we've been for over half the season.

Exactly, and like I said Dobbs isn't a threat to catch the ball like Kordell or El were, if Dobbs is in the game, you're telling the Browns, we're running the ball.

I think it worked because we were actually pushing the ball downfield and getting the D to back off, and when you replace Rudolph with Dobbs, there's a solid chance he's throwing the ball, if you take Ben off the field for Dobbs, that's going to tell the Browns it's a run for sure. Conner averaged over 4ypc.

Yep and say he fumbles the exchange, the ball, or throws a INT in the playoffs that could quickly kill momentum.

The risk VS reward doesn't seem to balance in his favor.

Yeah, only way I employ anything like that is if the Browns show some sort of defensive look that it could exploit. Do I pull Ben, hell no, put Dobbs out there and have him pitch it to ben if the look isn't right and go to a pass from it. Seems pretty simple to me, but what do I know.

but, are you?
Dobbs isnt going to light it up with 300 yard games, or even get close to 200 yard games. but he was 4 of 5 yesterday. So he attempted 5 passes. is that telling the Browns you're running the ball when he throws 5 times?
your argument can also be flippped to say that if Mason is the QB, we're going to throw the ball. Mason attempted 39 passes, but ran just once. So when Mason is in the game, we're throwing the ball. Per YOUR logic.

No, my logic involves replacing your back up with another back up, vs replacing your 1st ballot HOF'er with a 3rd stringer. My point about throwing the ball is, if you're going to pull Ben off the field to throw a pass with your 3rd string QB, that's crazy. If you plan on throwing the ball, you just leave Ben in there.

I mean if Ben isn't the starter and we have to go with Rudolph, then hell yes I'm all for Dobbs staying involved, because there isn't a big drop off from Dobbs to Mason when it comes to actually playing the QB position, at least not yet.

There is noway Tomlin is dumb enough to actually take Ben off the field for the Dobbs, right?
I do like that Tomlin said after the game that they could possibly do it again, it gives Browns a little extra to prepare for just in case but I would certainly hope it isn't used.

I felt like they threw dobbs in right after Rudolph got in a groove and disrupted his rhythm... I mean it could be useful, but the package they ran it was meh.. it was mostly a specialized run package because we suck at running the ball...
What it really comes down to is do you have enough roster spots to cover the other positions with him active... this week was an exception because Ben was out...

Again not opposed to it but I’m not sure its as useful if its just the run option after a big play...

to clarify, i'd see no reason to ever pull Ben for Dobbs.

Mason? Yeah, I'd replace Mason for Dobbs in certain situations.

Look, all I know and all everyone on here knows (if you were watching all year) is that we CANNOT gain 1 or maybe 2 yards on 2nd, 3rd or 4th downs. That is a fact. We have had multiple shots at those situations on a drive and still couldn't gain the yardage. Teams knew what we were going to do. If Ben moved under center (which he rarely did), it was basically 99% we were running. This was actually one of the good things about Rudolph yesterday is he could throw from being under center (something he never did in college) but I digress. If we can bring Dobbs in with some good mobility and the threat of him to run or our runner to run or for Dobbs to throw the ball, it gives the other team something else to prepare for. If Ben is in the game, it's basically going to be a short pass. If we are down inside the ten, it makes Dobbs even more appealing.

Now, I'm not saying have Dobbs in there every time we get inside the ten. But it should be sometimes. It gives teams a wrinkle. Heck, have Ben and Dobbs back there. Dobbs could run or throw the ball or Ben could throw it. Just something to give us a better chance of making 1 ******* yard. This is the playoffs. You don't make that 1 ******* yard and you go home. All options should be on the table.

In short yardage situations I actually think it is a good idea. Our offense has been pathetically predictable all season. We have only started being productive on O when we FINALLY opened things up and started throwing the ball downfield. Dobbs brings another added element neither Ben nor Rudy have and that is mobility. He is actually a threat to run the ball for a decent gain. While I recognize his passing isn't anything to write home about, he can throw the ball and that is something opposing defenses have to be concerned about. Maybe its a gadget type play but, hey, IMO we need something extra if we are going to compete with Buffalo and KC or maybe even the Rats.

The absolute only chance Dobbs would have to throw the ball in this playoff game, outside injuries, is a two point conversion where we are up by 1 point, trying to get up by 3, like in the 2002 playoff game vs the Browns. Very low risk there if he ***** up.

I could only see Dobbs in replacing Ben to do a QB sneak when needing 1 yard, that's it

Sad that you would have to think about replacing somebody who's 6'5" and 240+ with a guy who's at least 25 pounds lighter, isn't it?

Here is the thing... even if Dobbs isn’t utilized at all in the next game, we threw a weird package out that the Browns now must gameplan for... and if nothing else that is good coaching... we bash the bad coaching so may as well praise tge good

Yep, exactly. The only other counter move the Steelers have at that point is to have Dobbs throw one. And honestly, I don't feel good at all about that prospect. These same writers and fans will have complete meltdown if Dobbs throws one and it gets picked for a tuddy.

I think its a bad idea to take Ben off the field when he is perfectly healthy.

I responded before reading your post, but yeah, I feel the same way. The risk is not worth the reward. Or like Litos said up thread, maybe for a QB sneak on a short 3rd or 4th and one.
