Ben's Arm

Ben's arm is fine. His knees look like the problem.

He stands like a statue, he runs the whole machine,
Throwing all the short routes, always stays up clean,
He plays by intuition, the down marker counters fall,
That big hobbled white kid, sure plays some mean foot ball.

Jim Miller pointed this out today on NFLRadio, he says Ben was arm throwing not stepping into it, struggling with his drop backs. Can you drop back when you’re never under center??
Maybe the leg issue is why he’s not under center more??

I don't think they were under center earlier in the season. They also ran a lot more of the Matt Canada concepts early and we scored a lot more too.

Well if its his knees or not. The guy can throw the ball. BUT. He looks disinterested, he looks un emotional, i know hes " old" but he plays very passive and folds up like a towel under pressure. He faces the pressure, but just goes down easier. I guess its age. He seems to have developed a taste for having it all in front of him and relying on instincts experience and knowledge. Never taking his eyes off the defense. I guess its worked. I would love to see roll outs. sprint draws, flare passes. I dont think these are even an option under fichtner. Because of ben? Meaning this is bens preference? IDK. But we cant run the ball , doing what were doing. We cant seem to pass intermediate either.

This is something the Pittsburgh media should try to get to the bottom of. Not blame ben for changing plays. etc.

To me it reeks of the old Arians era stuff. Letting ben do what he wants. If its a physical need , i understand, but figure it out. Fichtner is making me miss Haley bad.

This Fichtner offense is the total opposite of Arians. Arians wanted to attack down field on every play. Ben even said he prefers that type of offense. Fichtner said he had to convince Ben of this short pass offense.. this is on the coaching, not Ben telling them he doesn’t want to do stuff.

Not his arm it’s his decision making forcing ball into tuff spots ***. The defense’s have taken away the short passing game.. period... full stop... did weeks ago and we just keep lining up and passing 2 yards down field. We don’t have open receivers right now. The offense couldn’t be more ineffective if they just went out there and played without the ball. The offense looks identical to last years horrible... embarrassing.

Thats not what i meant. I was meaning how ben and Arians were tight. And we / I get the impression that him and Fichtner are tight as well. If ben hates this type of offense, i cant tell yet. He seems content to take the shotgun snap and stand there and throw short.

Go back and watch the replays. It is his knee/s. Too much upper body compensation.

Because, although it's against popular opinion and it goes against all the hack ex NFL player analyst, Ben is doing what he's told for the most part. He wasn't a fan of Cowher's/Whiz's offense but he ran it and won, then Arians O came along and he ran his offense, as evident by everyone crying he held the ball to long, then Haley introduced some of the shorter WR screens, etc. which he ran, now it's Randy's offense, and now everyone is crying he doesn't hold the ball long enough.
You know Ben does what he wants and isn't coachable. Does anyone in their right mind, that has watched Ben since he's been here, really think Ben would not try to move the ball at the end of the 1st half with almost and minute and 2 timeouts if it were up to him?

Too many Ben apologists on this board.

I get it. He is HOF QB who means a lot to the franchise. But you guys have got to be honest...

Outside of the TD throw to JW, Ben's throws were either:
1.) 3 yard dumps
2.) Inaccurate mid range shots
3.) Jump ball deep throws (Claypool and JW)

The fact that we can only do #1, combined with the fact that he is never under center, clearly hurts the running game. I mean, this offense doesnt even keep the opposing defense honest with play action, because Ben is either too hobbled or too lazy to go under center.

I know many of you want to blame the:
OLine- but even the Depot has pictures where he refuses to step into the pocket.
Fichtner- Lets be honest, this is Bens's offense. Even when we went to hurry up, Ben threw the same damn dink/dunk plays.

I really hope that its just a stiff knee, and that we can let him sit for a game or two. But the excuses need to stop.

It is important to understand that these aren't shots at Ben. Believe me, I appreciate everything he has done. He has given us some great football for a lot of years. But if he can't or won't do what needs to be done anymore...

Think about it guys, Ben hasn't been the same since he hurt both knees in the Cowboys game. He's playing hurt.

It doesn't mean he can't manage it or he can't win, but he definitely can't get hit.

This. And if you think his only good throws this season were 3 yard dumps, I don't know what to tell you. Some of his timing lasers into tight windows only our WR could catch have been ******* impressive. He's threaded some passes only a few QBs can make.

if they could run the ball at all and then use play action, teams wouldn't be teeing off on Ben and have to slow down a step and give him a chance to step into deeper throws

his arm is fine....

If Ben can still hit on the deep pass, he needs to start doing so. Time to stop protecting him with the quick passes, if that is what the Steelers are doing. Because that has been figured out. Alternatively, if this short passing game is more because Ben has lost the ability to go deep/intermediate, we are screwed.

I agree with the new guy

I think he just needs to throw intermediate passes more not necessarily deep ones. Also keep in mind the Oline and WRs play a hand in the card game they need to be on point too.

I think his leg injury whatever it was will continue healing which should help him step into throws.

Spot on. There were many articles last week I mentioned where they were saying the Steelers organization was concerned about Ben's' knee and if he would/could make it through the year. I mean look at him compared to early in the season. He barely moves out of the pocket.

Hopefully, we can beat the Bungles and clinch the division. I wouldn't rest guys for the last 2 games but I sure would rest Ben and a few others against Cleveland in our last game. I don't see us overtaking the Chiefs for the top seed.

The thing is, Ben will still rip one, like the throw on Sunday to Washington for the TD. It makes me wonder if he worries on that arm, figures he only has so many of those throws in it. Hell, who can blame him. I've never had a number of elbow tendons ripped.

Even the SNF crew commented that Ben is throwing flat footed a lot. If he is injured, sit him and let him heal. If he can't step into his throws and is compensating with arm strength, then he's also risking injury to that throwing arm.

The Steelers aren't going to win any more games with an injured Ben than they are with Rudolph or Dobson. Not at this point with this offense, anyway.

I said it on the podcast yesterday, the Steelers win and they are locked into the 2/3 seed. Does it matter who you play at home? No. So if we win on MNF, I sit Ben and give him the time he needs to get healthy for a playoff run. No he won't be rusty, he'll be healthy, and the only way we're winning a SB, is with a healthy Ben who isn't in pain!

Ben is denying the knee injury...Ben, on the report the Steelers are worried about his knee:

"I'm 38 years old, I've played football for 17 years... (but) other than just an old knee and arthritis, my knee actually feels pretty good.
That report to me is just one of those phony kind of things people make up."

Exactly, I read that this morning and don't believe it, claimed it flared up a bit against WFT but it's fine now. Also mentioned his arm is fine, just precautionary issues. Ok, now that his physical status is settled...

On Youtube you can find old episodes of This Week in Pro Football. I get a kick out of remembering some of those names. Just did this the other day in the midst of these Ben discussions.

Anyway, I clicked on one...a Redskins-Giants game from 1975. Billy Kilmer was QBing the Skins, and he was around 36 years old in 1975. Hell, when he was 25 years old he didn't move well. But on one of the plays...he rolled out!!!! He hit a guy down the sideline and the play went for a 96 yard TD.

If Billy Kilmer could do it, Ben can still do it.
