How did WFT beat Pittsburgh? Sweat, Young say Ravens helped originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

As the Washington Football Team trotted into the Heinz Field tunnel following their upset 23-17 victory over the previously undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers, Washington's two top pass rushers had a parting message.

Montez Sweat, who was responsible for tipping the Ben Roethlisberger's pass that landed in the hands of Jon Bostic for the game-sealing interception, screamed "I knew it!" three times.

Then came a particularly interesting comment from Chase Young, who said "Baltimore exposed some things" about Pittsburgh.

Both comments were noticed first by the NFL Network's Aditi Kinkhabwala.

After the game, Young expanded on what he meant.

"Really a lot. Schemes, certain guy's tendencies," Young said. "I would say tendencies of the offense and certain things they like to do out of different looks Baltimore executed on. I feel like we did too."

Young is referring to Baltimore's clash with Pittsburgh just five days before Monday's game. The Ravens didn't win, but a depleted Baltimore team played inspired football and fell 19-14 -- an impressive effort despite missing close to 20 players due to coronavirus.

After watching the game, Young, Sweat and the rest of Washington's defense felt they could contain Pittsburgh's offense.

And despite a few mishaps in the first half, Washington's defense played spectacularly over the final 30 minutes of the game.

Washington allowed two touchdowns in the first half, but from that point on gave up just one field goal the rest of the afternoon. After allowing 211 yards to the Steelers in the first half, Washington gave up just 107 total yards over the final two quarters.

Excluding the opener in Philadelphia, Washington's defense has been playing its best football of the season over the past three weeks. It's led to a trio of wins and a tie for first place in the NFC East with just four weeks to go.

For Sweat, though, this is how he envisioned the unit performing all season.

"This is the kind of football we've been wanting to play since Week 1," Sweat said.

They throw short. Washington rushed four and attacked the receivers on those short patterns.

Anyone else notice while the Washington RB was open constantly our receivers had to fight for every catch and got tackled almost immediately?

“We knew they threw short passes”

-Redskins exposing Steelers. They really got us.

yeah it had nothing to do with drops or being short Bush, Dupree, Conner, Pouncey, Nelson, Spillane and whoever else was out for the game or during the game
Those things were probably less of a factor than the Steelers refusing to make any changes to how they've been playing for the last 11 games despite the fact that they've had less and less success.

It doesn't take a brain surgeon to see that the the Steelers are extremely limited in what they are willing to do on offense. Prior to this season, Ben Roethlisberger was in the top 10 all time in average length of pass. This year he's among the league's lowest. That literally happened overnight. I have no doubt Ben can still throw a 20 yard pass on a rope, but the current offensive scheme is completely contrary to that.

I suppose it's partly to keep Ben as healthy as possible. But geez. Help a brother out. Get some mid-level passes out there to back the ******' D off a little.

If the Steelers make ONE yard and go up 21-0 are they still saying this?

Exactly or they catch the ball. So they had us figured out, but had to come back from 14-0 and hold on for the win.

The drops were impactful in Ravens game less so versus Washington. Not being able to convert 3rd & 4th and 1 led to the Washington loss and you shouldn't have to pass to pick up a yard.
Poor play calling and limited push from O-line led to this loss. Not sure those are being exposed, because many have been complaining about these two issues all year.

THey are not wrong, Fichtner is nothing f not totally predictable in his play calling and substitution packages/formations. He totally telegraphs the possible plays eliminating a huge element of surprise form the game relying strictly on beating your man to win.

I agree, but a few of the drops vs Washington would've resulted in 1st downs, kept the clock moving, kept the offense on the field, and allow the defense to rest.

Refs ,short week, and dropped passes. I love that Washington thinks they accomplished something but one lucky win.

This. The WFT was allowed back into the game. Couple that w/ injuries at DB and ILB - the game swung their way.

Glad they won their SB for the year....

In reality, with two minutes left and four downs all the way, that game was still ours to win. Another tipped ball and one could say they got lucky on that particular series to preserve the win. My point is: they barely won even with all our mishaps, drops, stupid calls, etc.

Ehh, if my aunt had balls she'd be my uncle. The Steelers played poorly, they're offensive scheme is predictable to a fault, and Ben is doing things that he is not comfortable doing (releasing the ball in less than 2 seconds). They need to make changes and/or adjustments to the offense. They have the athletic skill players to be more dynamic but for some reason they continue to insist on playing small ball.

Fichtner is only better than Todd Haley. Who hated him? The same head coach who hired Haley and cost us the Washington game by not kicking field goals and going for in on bad 4th down calls? Yep

Not only is Fichtner predicable, he doesn't know what play action is, and seldom calls screens, making us even easier to prepare for.

Yup, that's why we lost the Washington game, instead of having an unproven kicker kick a long FG for us...

Wow, you would think the Steelers were having their worst season in 20 years or so, instead of potentially the best.

**** dude, we are in the midst of our longest losing streak this season.................................. Don't check on game thread for very long as you've T'aint seen nothing yet..........

That's one way to look at it Zona or we can see a steady decline in team performance and adjust to it. The past is nice to tout but the meat of the season is now and thru the playoffs. All that glory can be for naught...real quick.

Yep they need to get healthy now and hopefully start to fine tune somethings, if we can make that last game vs Cleveland meaningless alot of guys can have that week off
I could accept a loss today as long as they show some life in them. It's time to wake up and show some creativity and enthusiasm, obviously, if you will.

Win or lose today the offense needs to show it can get its head out of its ***. If the offense looks like garbage I will be very concerned how far this team can go.
