Robert Spillane To Start In Place Of Devin Bush

I gotta agree with Coach. If you can get a legit three down linebacker in a trade OK, but that is a unicorn and not going to happen. You could not ask for more than Spillane gave today vs. the run. so you sub package and live with it. now if you can upgrade at dime backer cheap, (5th 6th rounder), that I pull the trigger on.

Don't get me wrong, I know they can't get anyone of consequence who's going to even remotely replace Bush, but if Spillane is out for any length of time, they need to grab someone.

1 ) Who's out there to pick up via trade and even if we did how long would it take that person to learn the defense? I don't want to part with a high draft pick. No way.

2 ) Bush had 1 sack in 5 games. And just 1 sack all last year. Nothing special. Williams is solid on the middle blitz. We need Dupree, Heyward and Tuitt to contribute.

3 ) In his last 3 games Bush had 2, 1, and 2 solo tackles. Spillane today also had 2 solo tackles, missing a portion of the game.

I'm not saying Spillane is as good as Bush, I'm saying the drop off between the two has not been much so far and the Steelers are better off playing a DB in Bush's place for nickel and dime coverage. Bush was picked on quite a bit in pass coverage this year.

I wasn't able to watch the game.

Based on your analysis of Spillane, do you believe is he "the guy" going forward? Seems he played admirably!

I like spillane, but I don’t want this to be our depth the rest of the season... get a guy... there is ten games for him to assimilate before the playoffs... grab a cover first guy if you can... maybe the dude off the jets... i dont want to hear the bitching if Leveon Bell torches us in the postseason especially if we get another injury at ilb

With 14 team making the playoffs, it makes it harder for teams who might have a decent dime backer to part with him for a 5th or 6th round pick. No GM or coach wants to be fired.

One player I really liked the pre-season was Matt Thomas. He blitzed well, lead the team in tackles and was solid in coverage in the pre-season. Tomlin cut him and he went to the CFL. Maybe he was dumb as rocks or a bad character person. Not sure. Is he worth a practice squad shot? Why not?

Agreed...

The kids shoulder has to be sore as hell...

I think the Ravens go right at him...

Spillane will get his first introduction to the "Starter Quality" Toradol next week.

You want that athletic sideline to sideline ILB? We already have it on the roster. It is UG3.

He's green, but he's got the athleticism. He's just raw as hell.

Think I might start calling him Raw Dawg. But seriously, rooting like hell for him. I'm liking Highsmith too. He put a nice little stick on Henry today too.

I'm personally, and I have no skin in the game, ready to give up next year's #2 to get a real player at ILB. But that's me...

Relax for a minute. Spillane was only out for a few plays, he went back in later and finished the game.

There were plenty of ups and downs throughout the contest, and one of the high points was a crushing goal line hit by Robert Spillane on running back Derrick Henry. Spillane left the game after this hit, only to return later, but he certainly made a name for himself in the process.

Thanks, Chip. Was getting a little close to the ledge for a while there but you brought me back.

That remains to be seen. He’s a lot cheaper than Vince Williams on the cap so he could be starting next year. He’s an aware player who tackles well.

I thought Spillane acquitted himself pretty well. The hit on Henry was nice. He is going to be tested again Sunday against Baltimore. It's one thing to have a good game once. Consistency is what is needed. Time will tell, but there wasn't a noticeable drop off from Bush, and that is a good thing going forward. Obviously.

If you will.

Spillane has been in with the defense games before Bush got hurt. I never saw a pass go his way, so the assumption was the coverage was good. Not that I'd put him on Mark Andrews. I'd let Fitz cover him. Shut down Andrews and away Jackson's security blanket goes.

True but neither equate to Devin Bush. We need to look for a trade partner.
There will be no trade partner that equates to Devin Bush. Just aint out there.

And even if he was, what you'd have to give up to get him. Then you have Devin Bush and the guy you gave away a 1st and 2nd for on the roster. Lotta money tied up in middle linebacker.

hoping Spillane holds up physically. I know he is a tough, hard hitting dude, but the body can hit so many brick walls before it breaks down. We need him!

to be fair, there is only one D. Henry out there. I think the rest of the backs should be a little less brick wallish.
