Bud Dupree over his last 21 games, per Daniel Valente
@pfref
:

16.5 sacks

27 QB hits

45 pressures

20 Tackles for losses

5 forced fumbles

^^^ Very impressive. If Bud can keep up this pace, he deserves another contract.

Bud is getting another contract. Probably even be a very lucrative one. Just won't be in Pittsburgh

He may deserve another contract but Watt is the priority. We can't pay both. Bud will sign elsewhere next season for a lot more than the Steelers can offer him.

If that's the case, I hope we can trade him. Getting a lowly 3rd round comp pick in 2021 would suck, he's worth so much more than that.

To keep Dupree, get the ax out. Pass rusher of his ability are very rare in the NFL.

If the Steelers cut Williams and McDonald, it would save 9.2 million on the cap space. Cut Pouncey and that would be 8 million in cap space. Pouncey was replaced by journeyman before with little drop off and he's not worth the type of money the Steelers are paying him.

My point, if we cut some players there is enough room to keep Dupree. He's an impact player, the guys I mentioned who could be cut are not / no longer are.

Spillane's perforce if it remains good will make it easier for the Steelers to part ways from Williams. From what I saw Spillane instinctive and smart with adquate speed ( 4.77 40 ) , and long arms. The smart/ instictive over acheiver types can shine at ILB, perhaps more so than any other positon on the defense. In college he had 4 interception in his past two years, which is very good for an ILB.

Like it or not part of BUD's production is accredited to having Mr. TJ WATT opposite him. When WATT is on the sidelines for a play or two, Dupree becomes a non-factor. I'm saying they make a great combination but I'm not certain the cost of keeping him, both monetary and personal changes, will be worth it. Let's see this Hightower kid and what he brings to the table opposite WATT, maybe enough to advert the cost of Dupree................

Sigh. We will not trade Bud.

it would be very hard to do. We aren't going to trade him until after the season. Then, a lot of things would need to happen:
1. We determine we can't meet his contract desires.
2. We find a team willing to do a trade which would most likely need to be a Tag-Trade type deal. I suspect finding a team open to this will be tough, but not impossible. A team might covet him that does not want to bid against other teams in FA.
3. Get Bud on board. Bud's best play for himself is to hit FA. The only way the above works if Bud agrees to a long term deal with the team he goes to before the tag-trade is done.

that said, I do not want him to go. I have said that since last year. He and Watt are great bookends. I just don't know how we keep them both. The cap before this year would be tough. Next year, who knows what the NFLPA and NFL will agree to on the cap.

I think Ben and a few other cap freeing moves would do what they need to do in the offseason. As it looks like Ben will still be here. So they will try to keep the team together.

BTW Did you put low points because of it being a Thursday game or when two crappy teams play each other rule? Going against that rule almost cost me 10 points. Eagles had no business losing then they had no business winning,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

If the league knew Bud's numbers would be this good this year, we might have gotten a contract offer on his nonexclusive franchise tag. No way he earns a tag and trade. The player to make that play with would be JuJu.

I feel Watt and Bud are like Crosby and Malkin. Both are incredible together, but Watt (Crosby) can play with anyone, and Bud (Malkin) needs talent with him to shine his brightest. This is why you ultimately prioritize Watt over Dupree.

The problem with Ben is, unless he takes a big hometeam discount, extending him just pushed the cap hit further down the road. Eventually you have to deal with it.
Also, does Ben want to play into his 40's?

I had no confidence in either team. A full strength Philly would have beat the tar out of the Giants (especially without Barkley), but Philly has been so bad this year and with so many injuries I just didn't trust them.

I'm absolutely certain that Coach wanted to run Buddy out of town up until last year...

Most of the board did. They did not give the proper respect to STUD Dupree. He went from overDurpee to STUD last year. To not pay a guy because he didn't have elite numbers each season is foolish. It was easy to see that the game was clicking for him last year. He's made some great plays out there for us and to negate those by saying he plays opposite of TJ is nonsense. He made the plays and he's our current sacks leader. We need someone opposite TJ and I am glad we have Dupree in that spot for now.

It might be a necessary evil if they want to keep Bud. Either that or they could go with a cheaper free agent route....

We can Franchise him one more year, I believe with a 20% increase.

If we win it all or are right on the doorstep I can see us overpaying for a single final year...

Bud saw how AB & Leveon both killed their careers by leaving...

Dupree may just love PGH, he's got a new show & I anticipate an episode of "Bud brings a Buddy" with Buds guest being the Franchise Tag

One curious move to me was bringing up a DE instead of bringing in an ILBer.

Just like Deebo and Woodley. Woodley did nothing for the Raiduz when he was set free by the Steelers.

You are a year off. Dupree began to produce last year.

In 2018, when Bud had 5.5 sacks, and just 13 QB hits. I wasn't happy with him then.

Things changed in 2019 when he produced 11.5 sacks, far more tackles and more QB hits. The light bulb went on.

Over the past 21 games he's been excellent. He's worthy the tag money now. Our defense doesn't do with with coverage, it's the pass rush.

Bud Dupree has certainly changed manys' opinion of himself. Several from here wanted BUD jettisoned to obliviation at one point and possibly justified as to his slow start(first 2.5 years). LATELY (last 2.5 years), many has changed their minds, as his game has picked up and improved.

I'm just glad some can admit to changing their minds as the player changes their play ability.
