By Matt Papiernik,*@Matt_Papiernik*on Twitter SteelerNation.com   This news doesn’t shock anyone. It was always anticipated that after Robert Spillane filled in for Devin Bush in Week 6 against the Cleveland Browns, that he would assume Bush’s starting spot. Pittsburgh Steelers head c0ach, Mike Tomlin made sure to make this known on his weekly news conference. […]

Next man up and things of that nature, obviously.

I realize the trade deadline is before you get a real good look at Spillane. But this is where the coaches and Colbert earn their millions. Can you get someone off of the street or in a reasonable trade that is better? They should know exactly what Robert Spillane is at this point. Solid starter with some limitations is good enough. No way this team is better for having lost Bush. But everyone gets injuries.

We are all going to find out how good of an inside linebackers coach Jerry Olsavsky is.

Well first team up For him to face has Henry coming off of a 200 yard game and is missing their LT so probably are looking to run more than usual as well... we may find out if his run stopping is as good as advertised asap... if it isn’t you better get a plan b ready quick cause its not like this dude is a pass covering beast lol...

he did well against the stains...the titan will be a harder test. hopefully he steps up to the task

Browns had the #1 rushing attack in the league, and we shut it down. TEN has one guy. I'm starting to feel that the Steelers are going to run blitz and hit him in the backfield the same way we attacked Barkley since NY only had one guy. If this happens, the only way they can get off a designed run is 3rd and long.

I'm getting really excited for this matchup guys!

people who watch the games know this.

Turning a lemon reply into lemonade, the answer is yes, so he's obviously smart.

People who pay attention to the cap understand he could very well be Vince Williams's replacement. I like Vince, but his cap number next year is 7 million dollars, and if cut, the Steelers would save 4 million in cap space. The question is, can Spillane play? He's a bit faster than Vince, and seems unusually aware for a young player. Productive in college as a coverage person, Spillane had 4 interceptions in his last two seasons, which is a good amount for a linebacker.

For those who pay attention to my posts, I made a Spillane post or two playing in the nickel with our starting defense long before Bush was hurt.

vince should be wearing the green dot from the way he played he looked like a run first LB if we can hold henry we continue but if we let lamar run around or cant contain the middle to Andrews or the other te its time to think hard for a trade for Williamson or sign Lee. As our playoff path will likely lead down vs Smith this week Andrews Hooper later and the road to tampa likely Kelce

I am not opposed to them trying to bring in another vet at ilb even if its a very low cost one that isn’t expected to be much other than a backup and emergency plan

We have a grand total of four on the roster, one is a converted safety, and spillane is now the second most experienced player left there

Even if he is great filling in for Bush... even if UG3 is Quietly a Pass rushing superstar in development, eVen if Allen is able to play the coverage downs like a master, I wouldn’t mind an experienced utility man Here just in case of someone faltering in their role In what is certain to be a rotation or another injury....

It can be a scrub free agent or a backup trade... it doesn’t have to be some premier player or even a current starter

Run stopping is a 7 man plus job. I am very confident they will be fine there. It will be about pass coverage. In my opinion they are going to have to play much more aggressively with their safeties. If they are going to play that 30 yard drop with Minkah they are gonna get ****** carved up over the middle. Bush's value isn't in run defense. He is more than serviceable but he is like 230 at best. His value is he is a 3 down guy with running back speed. That will be hard to replace and will likely require other players in sub packages than Spillane, but that will become evident in the next couple weeks.

Feel like I heard someone say this today, can't remember who.....must have been some podcast I listened to.

you turn interesting conversations into Turd Sandwiches.

Turd sandwiches fall out if your mouth. I’d tell you to get a life but I’m afraid it too late. Now continue to pay money and bump my posts. That’s what you are here for.

But do pay attention to what I said about Williams.

Coach I once again, god forbid, actually agree with most of your thoughts until you had to type that last line. It was unneeded and self aggrandizing. Not as bad as some but learn to leave out some of the self promoting.

The problem is being on the field for passing downs.

Thanks, I was replying to a Richard who used the you don't watch the games line, pointing out that Spillane was not stranger to the starting nickel defense, that is if he was watching the game. If they keep it clean, so will I. Its up to the mods who are okay with trolling

I read this article and realized that I too am no Kieth Butler. I have a lot of faith in Spillane and Allen - Gilbert back-ups but what I didn't know was with Hilton down, Nelson goes to the slot and Layne moves to outside duties, Sutton stays in the dime role. I thought Sutton was the other slot guy. Another realization was that I forgot completely about Sean Davis being in the safety mix.

Butler also noted the confidence in the current ILB backups. Robert Spillane will largely fill Bush’s shoes this weekend against Tennessee with Marcus Allen and Ulysees Gilbert III possibly working into sub-packages. It’s also possible a guy like Davis sees a role in the dime defense, especially if Mike Hilton isn’t able to suit up. Though after Hilton went down last weekend, Justin Layne became the 6th DB, Steven Nelson kicked to the slot, and Cam Sutton maintained his dime role.
