I know there have been some Calvin Johnoson/ Larry Fitz comparisons with Claypool right now, so I wanted to break down some cold hard data.

Here is what Claypool is currently doing 4 games into his rookie season, that no other big receiver has really been asked to do. He's on all of the ST coverage teams, and he's the only WR in 22/13 sets (first number is RBs 2nd is TEs). The latter is insane. JuJu was getting some rookie snaps here, but it looks like they like Claypool's blocking and playmaking better now and he is getting more snaps than other WRs because of this. I don't remember any of the other WRs I am going to mention as being ST coverage studs, or in on 22/13 sets, because they weren't known for blocking. They are also using him as a runner more than the other WRs as he sealed the first victory of the year on an end around for a 1st down.

Claypool right now is his own receiver and the Steelers are just scratching the surface on how to utilize him. Hell he would have had 200yds and 5TDs if refs could call the game right, and he didn't hit a defenders leg on a beautiful diving catch.

Here's how he stacks up with other notable WRs rookie years:

Claypool 6'4" 238lb 4gms 1strt 13rec 261yd 4car 14yd 5TD
Megatron 6'5" 237lb 15gm 10strt 48rec 756yd 4car 52yd 5TD
R. Moss 6'4" 210llb 16gm 11strt 69rec 1313yd 1car 4yd 17TD
Fitzgerald 6'3" 218lb 16gm 16strt 58rec 780yd 8car 14yd 8TD
Burress 6'5" 232lb 12gm 9strt 22rec 273yd 0rush 0TD
M.Bryant 6'4" 210lb 10gm 3strt 26rec 549yd 3car 12yd 8TD

Claypool is projecting for 52rec 1044yd 16car 56yd 20TD

I can't see him getting 20TDs, but he can hit those receiving numbers and rushing numbers IMHO.

Claypool is the heaviest of all of the other receivers, and his blazing 4.3/40 at that weight is special. Megatron special. Claypool has better hands than Burress and Bryant, and is showing he can hang with all of these other player's stats, except for Moss. dude was a freak out of the box!

Just interesting to put into perspective, the abilities of Claypool at this point, where it looks like he's projecting to start sooner than later, but either way, he's probably going to receive a majority of WR snaps due to his skillset in lower WR packeges with 1 or 2 WR sets.

Man you have to feel bad for Megatron getting stuck on that scrub franchise. Burress and Bryant could have been so much more.

I could see Claypool

Chas-ing some of those statistics and even surpassing a few of them. Better yet the kid seems like he just wants to win and I like that.

Great interview with Chase Claypool by Mark Sanchez when he was drafted by the Steelers.

Nice interview. Learned Chase was a high school running back. Looked at his college stats to see his career rushing numbers: 3 rushes for 6 yards... ND dropped the ball there. Kudos to the Steelers for exploiting this skillset!

I’m not saying anything. I posited that Johnson would be the #1 before season’s end, and now he has a little bit bad hands and got hurt. Don’t want to jinx Chase.

I think Claypool will primly have abetter rookie season than everyone Cope mentioned, with the obvious excpetion of Randy Moss.

Just one minor correction for Cope. Claypool is very fast. More like 4.41. He's not a 4.3 guy. The would not be human at his height and weight.

Randy Moss had 17 TDs as a rookie wow...Obviously Claypools TD numbers are very skewed by his 4 TDs so I do not see him touching the 17TDs. I think he will end up a little better than Fitzgeralds numbers. I can see 8-10TDs 900yrds.

That franchise is a toilet and always has been. 2 of the best players, still in their prime, would rather retire than continue beating their head against the wall for that dumpster fire.

Imagine the numbers of Megatron and Barry Sanders if they were allowed to leave via free agency and play with a real team, with a real QB, and a real coach!

The steelers wr situation is basically a grab bag of mismatches... juju is an ok #2 type who plays a lot of slot type roles... he is a bad match for most slot type #3 cbs... likewise Johnson, like brown before him, looks like a really great slot type that the steelers often use outside. That quickness he has is brutal for the CBs expecting a lot of straight line speed... claypool is just a fast huge freak... and Washington is a poor mans #2 buried in the lineup.

Even their #5 is freakishly fast... so you get some advantages there.

Pretty soon teams are just going to plaster cover the deep stuff and see if we are patient with the undernieth stuff, but its a great situation to be in

A very good friend of mine is a huge ND fan. He says Pitt still hasn't seen this kids FULL potential but he also says ND misses him terribly. I said you are probably right on the first part and **** ND on the second part............ (just kidding as I like ND)

Salute the nation

Thing is Ben is showing patience and isn't forcing footballs. So they might be waiting a long time for him to show impatience. He is having a MVP type start which hopefully will carry over to the rest of the season.

A golden dome~r fan said about him before the draft that he had extra gear, a competitive streak, that made him the best athlete on field in every game he played at ND. Big fast competitive... sounds like a steeler to me! No doubt Ben makes stars out of his receivers Wallace, Holmes, on n on... but this kid just Looks to be special player go Steelers!!!
