Games Balls, Game Goats & FU's........Week 3 vs Texans.....

PS EXCELLENT post Chicoman. You nailed it pretty much spot on, THANK YOU

Coach, are you seriously gonna pimp Mcfarland over Conner today?

Conner was clearly running very well and once again he essentially iced the game with a late big run.

Mcfarland played well as a change if pace guy. I'm not unhappy with him.

I was not happy with the personnel at RB in key situations. What was it 3rd or 4th and short and Samuels ran the ball?? Where the hell was Snell??

I am fine with McFarland as a change of pace- What I would really like to see in certain down and distance scenarios is a 2 RB backfield with Conner or Snell and a Pass catching RB.......

They finally used Watt on O and he was just used as a misdirection-WTF??

Edmonds had a couple good plays as well. Can't add anything that hasn't been said other than 3-0 in September brings good thin Gs in February to Remeber.

LMAO, DIC, you're somethin' else, i tell ya:laugh:

The Steelers are deficient at both coordinator positions. The team has so much damn talent on both sides of the ball that any moron could have success calling plays.

The sad fact is this steeler defense now boils down to get the sack or get beat. Before we name the Texans some juggernaut, remember that Daniel Jones and Jeff ******* Driskel also made plays vs the supposed great steeler defense.

Fichtner has no focus. He's always trying to do everything, almost like he feels he has to call every play on the sheet before the game is done. Every damn week, the steeler flush the 1st quarter down the toilet while Fichtner tries to figure it out.

It's absurd how the steelers routinely struggle early on offense. The initial gameplan is always wrong. You would think out of shear dumb luck that they'd come out of the gate guessing right and put up some early scores but No. Always having to make adjustments.

I disagree with that playcall assessment. Some things didn't work, but when Conner ripped off a big run right. They immediately ran the mirror left. I saw that twice this game. Haven't done my rewatch yet, but that's what I saw, a willingness to stick with what works and run it again.

yes, late in the game. Fichtner does make adjustments and usually figures it out by the end but how are you going to win in the playoffs by giving away a quarter or 2 to get the offense going. This is not a single game criticism. This is a very long pattern.

What is the streak now without a TD on the opening drive? Is it 21 games?

I don't give a **** about beating the Texans. This team is damn near it the playoffs already at 3-0 since they expanded the playoff field. My concern is that this team has way too much talent to be so ineffective early on a weekly basis.

What are the steelers core plays? What's the bread and butter? What's are the plays they always execute at a high level? Go ahead, think of some specific plays that they've mastered and can execute flawlessly? There are none.

Being versatile can be a strength but you can be too diverse to the point where you are a jack of all trades and master of none. I'm worried that's where the steelers are.

Tomlin's doghouse for fumbling in the first two games of the season.

FU's:
I'm going to ***** about the officiating....Holy Crap I saw TJ Watt getting completely MUGGED and Blatantly Held by Texan's OT & TE. Also the no call on the pass by Ben to Claypool......Claypool almost made an incredible one handed catch...because Bradley Roby had both hands on Claypool's other arm holding him for being able to catch the ball. How the Hell can they miss that? Then when Ben scrambled for the 3rd down run for a first down....they missed the spot declaring 4th down. Tomlin challenges it....looked pretty obvious that Ben made the first down marker......PLAY STANDS AS CALLED.......4th Down Steelers. Complete BS!

I'll add the hit to DJ should have been a 15 penalty for hitting a defenseless WR...the refs flat out suck against us this year.

I am thoroughly convinced that they intentionally run all the plays that never work before they get to the ones that actually work. The play calling is maddening.

That is not what he said. At all. He said that mixing in McFarland paid dividends, and he gave credit to the coaching staff for doing it. He never said McFarland had a better game than Conner.

Right now, our bread and butter plays are counter traps in the running game. Passing game is hitting short to medium routes utilizing combo patterns.

I do agree that they can improve. Shotgun in short yardage needs to be eliminated. It's ******* dumb. We are the only team with no threat to QB sneak, and that is inexcusable with the biggest QB in the league.

Ben can run just about anything. He's great in 2min drills and no huddle. We will attack some teams with that when we start playing Baltimore.

I'd have to say, we are just starting to understand how personnel works with Big Ben at the helm. I liked working all 4 RBs into the game yesterday, so we can start to learn their pros and cons. Looks like we have Conner on 1st and 2nd down, Snell short yardage, McFarland change of pace, attacking the edges, and JaySam as a receiver on 3rd downs. This is their optimal roles.

Receivers are just starting to fall into their roles and Ben is hitting all 4 WRs and 2 TEs that are active on each gameday.

it's a big difference to understand what your offense is when you are just getting Ben back from being out a year, but they do a lot of things well. Last year was try to run the football, when teams stacked the line, we didn't have a QB that could make the throws to win the game. That is not the case this year.

2020 stats: Passing 242.3 Rushing 139.7
2019 stats: Passing 186.3 Rushing 90.4

Even with a small sample size this year, I'd say this offense this year can be defined as having a HOF QB leading it.

cope,, do any viewing of the Monday morning NFL stuff? Pretty damn hard to find anything about the 3-0 Steelers. Im throwing out a FU to the media.

No, I usually just rewatch the game and start editing my As the Game Turns and Hidden Plays articles. Then prep for the Podcast tomorrow.

Honestly, the Steelers are not going to get much national love until they beat TEN this weekend. They are widely recognized a a good team with their playoff performance from last season. Their strength is our strength against, so they will have a difficult time moving the ball on O.

Our QB is a good story, but the hot takes are mobile QBs now. Cam, Maholmes, and Jackson will get more press than Ben with their playmaking. Wilson is also doing some amazing things in Seattle. The Steelers may not make waves unless they are undefeated going into the Baltimore game. That is the story for me. if the Steelers are up by 1 or 2 games facing Baltimore in Balt, and pull off a win? Well it means the Ravens will be viewed as the 2nd best team in the division, and the Steelers are in elite talk for the AFC Championship. That's how you change perceptoins. Until then, we can just be happy to be labeled the scrappy underdogs of the division.

Not yet. A balance between the two seems best for now. 70/30. I will say Conner had unusually good blocking and with the same Blocking McFarland gets more yardage.

Given Conners history of not being durable a start for McFarland is likely. Once that happens we’ll see how he does.

I think McFarland will change up or predictable play calling. He can run outside and beat a defender to the edge or do damage on screens.

Probably our fastest back since Parker. His acceleration looks really good to me.

Berm, it wouldn’t have been a defenseless receiver penalty since it was well after the catch/or he was running with possession. It definitely was a crown to the face mask penalty.

The non call PI on Claypool was so blatantly obvious too. Both Side judges had eyes on the play. How can an official miss that call?

I also find it totally clandestine that there has been not one holding penalty called on the offense we are defending against in the three games we’ve played. We are among one of the top pass rushing teams percentage wise, and there hasn’t been one offensive holding call in 300 defensive snaps against us. Ludicrous.

Looks like we have a new punt returner. Let Ray Ray play. Diontae makes too many mistakes back there returning punts. Also don't know why they won't give Cam Sutton a chance to return punts.

Sloppy on offense for a good chunk of this game. The play calling was ogreish for quite a while. No room to **** the bed next week. We need to come out strong and get up on the Titans.

I stand corrected.

Super sketchy PI called on 4th down play to Claypool. Make up call on the non call when his arm was trapped and could only get one hand up. That was really bad.

Meh, Bermuda predicted 6-0 going into Baltimore weeks ago!!! I feel like Spike today...

I don't think it was that sketchy...Claypool adjusted his route to go more upfield, just as the defender adjusted to the route Claypool had been running and they ran into each other....obvious defensive PI

Thanks Ike! I couldn't tell 100% what happened to DJ (since I was watching w/o sound) but I'll see if I can find the whole game replay this week...

Spike may be still bailing water. Pensacola got hit hard by that hurricane a few weeks ago...FloraBama was nearly underwater!!!

He also spends most of his time on the non-football threads IIRC...

Thanks Berm. Usually during the season, he's heavy in the football forum as well.

The play calling is maddening.

Sarge, I get you, but realistically...The play calling was WAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY, WAAAAAAAAAAAAY better this week....
