Have to give the guy some credit and its nice to see a non-selfish story...

Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Laurent Duvernay-Tardif has opted out of the 2020 season, he wrote on social media, becoming the first NFL player to publicly say he won't suit up this year.

Duvernay-Tardif, 29, is a medical school graduate from McGill University in Canada, and he had been assisting as an orderly in a long-term care facility in the Montreal area during the coronavirus pandemic.

In his social media post, he called the decision one of the most difficult ones he has made in his life.

"Being at the frontline during this offseason has given me a different perspective on this pandemic and the stress it puts on individuals and our healthcare system," he wrote. "I cannot allow myself to potentially transmit the virus in our communities simply to play the sport that I love. If I am to take risks, I will do it caring for patients."

Good for him leaving a lot of money on the table to help people, good man.

CudOs to him, nice to see. Many people haven't given the pandemic the seriousness it deserves. Laurent, being a front line worker knows the seriousness of this pandemic.

My Daughter is a front line worker in the Child Protection Services and she witnesses the seriousness and continually checks on me and my precautionary state of mind (bless her).

I hope this HIGH profile player makes an impact and even if just on one individual in helping combat the C-19.

This type of sacrifice reminds me of Pat Tillman when he left the game to serve. Kudos for serving your community in Canada! Godspeed!!

With the NFL full of bad stores, this is a breath of fresh air. I saw a segment on Laurent Duvernay-Tardif on Real Sports ( HBO ) The NFL declined his request to put Dr. on his jersey number, even though he's earned it.

I have never worn a non Steelers jersey. I could wear Dr. Tarfif. Respect for this man.

Really? The world basically shut itself down because of the pandemic. That said I applaud this man for taking the season off for a greater cause.

If they opt out, does it still count as a contract year? Just curious.

I think he is referring to people who refuse to follow instructions. They are out there. Some even still think it is nothing more than a flu. I think that is more on a person to person basis than anything the government and companies have done or haven't done. Sure they took appropriate stances. Lot of people simply didn't follow what was layed out for them to do unless they had no choice on the matter. But you will get that no biggie I just stay away from people problem solved. At least in my household.

Yeah I am interested in this answer too.I think if they opt out the team shouldn't be penalized with a year off of a contract. Only right to have them under contract for the duration of time played outside of injury or behavior occurances.

I thought I saw an article a while back that said the NFL was offering players that option.

Yep...here ya go

I don't know if this was finalized but I'm sure some similar version exists

First up, one of the most intriguing aspects of pro football in a pandemic: The ability of players to choose not to play.

The deadline for making an all-or-nothing decision arrives on August 1, at 5:00 p.m. ET. Written notice “must be received” by the team before that moment; once notice is received as to a given player, the opt out becomes irrevocable. Thus, unlike a holdout (which can end at any time), the player who opts out cannot play at all in 2020.

A player who opts out will have his contract toll for a full year. He will not receive his base salary or any other payments scheduled to be earned after the date of the opt out, and he will not earn a benefit credit or an accrued season. In 2021, his contract will be reinstated. If he “timely reports for all required activities” in 2021, the opt out will not become a breach of his 2020 contract, which “will not subject him to discipline or forfeiture, will not void any bonuses or guarantees or have any other adverse consequences beyond those set forth herein.”

That’s an important provision. The player who opts out in 2020 can’t hold out or otherwise breach his contract in 2021; if he does, his opt out becomes a breach of his contract, after the fact.

The player who opts out will receive a $150,000 stipend for 2020 — minus any amounts already received by the player in 2020. The balance (up to $150,000) would be treated as an advance on the player’s 2021 base salary. (This implies that players not under contract for 2021 would not be eligible for the stipend.)

I guess I was referring to my area, we have very little C-19 ncases and many here go without masks etc. They act as if it's a inconvenience. My Daughter lives in Tucson AZ, ARIZONA was pandemic hot spot of the world at one time and she says many many NOT wearing masks.

Just because the world shut down doesn't mean that EVERYONE is complying. Take Florida / California / and several other spots trending UP in cases. The USA is trending up currently in new cases.

So many people are not taking it seriously enough then. ALso many people are taking it seriously enough but more need to.

On that subject. I went into our nearest little 'big' city yesterday and they had a mandatory mask edict in place, why I don't know 'cause we have had maybe two cases since the beginning of time. Not good for ole Chip, I don't even own one...don't really care to, but anyway. In Lowes, 50% of the people didn't have a mask at all and about half of the ones that did have a mask didn't know how to wear it. It was all I could do to keep from laughing in their face as the mask covered their mouth ( barely) only. After three more stores and about the same results, I left for home still maskless and more confused about the mandatory rules to wear something that was obviously a mystery to the wearers and evidently a non starter for the business.

Really....what's the point here ? Are we really scared or are we just 'towing the line'. Somebody needs to clear things up or people like me will continue to doubt the sincerity of this whole drama.

Chip, I just wear my bandana over my mouth and nose. Goes great with a Cowboy hat. Looks like I'm about ready to stick up the joint!
