By Matt Papiernik, @Matt_Papiernik*on Twitter SteelerNation.com   The NFL season is inching closer day by day, with the first regular season game less than two and a half months away. But there are no shortage of obstacles in the way, including the influence of COVID-19. Pittsburgh Steelers team captain and All-Pro defensive lineman, Cameron Heyward […]

Good read Matt

Cam is no different than any one of us commoners'. We all worry about our families / loved ones / ect.. It's a personal decision each player needs to make and like MLB the NFL needs an "opt out" policy.

GOOD health to those who play

Salute the nation

It’s funny how these players are scared to play even though they get paid millions and millions, top health care, and limitless health resources.

Meanwhile, people making $8.50 an hour with no heath care are pleading with their governor not to shut down so they can pay bills and try to survive financially, while risking their health.

It’s like they don’t realize they are in an entertainment business. It’s really hard to sympathize and listen to these athletes speak about anything anymore, they’re so far out of touch.

My son and I were talking about sports and opt-out policies for players a week or so ago. Totally agree a player should have the right to opt out and not play. Of course, he won't get paid either. The questions son and I came up with were around service time accrual and player benefits. Were it me making the call, I would continue to pay them benefits such as health but suspend the time off as accrual time. That is, a three year player that sits out a year is still a three year player when they come back. That way, no player can use it to miss a year and still get closer to FA.

I'm a police officer and contracted COVID at work, where I had no "Opt out" afforded to me. I was forced to completely isolate from my family for almost 3 weeks, lost pay at work, because loss of night differential while out sick. As well as other personal setbacks, as I was completely unable to meet responsibilities on the home front, because I'm middle class and unable to pay for services that I would normally be able to handle myself. I'm so done with these entitled, high paid athletes, even the league minimum paid! I have to work multiple years to make what 1year at league minimum is! And, I was far from seriously affected, compared to many, many others! I honestly hope the season doesn't happen, so these players in the entertainment business can get a taste of what life is like for the rest of us... owners too!!!

Thank you... much appreciated! Didn’t intend to make it about me. Again, I know many others had it way worse in various aspects. The medical field has clearly had the most significant and lasting exposure. It’s just getting tired that professional athletes clearly have self worth well above that of us dopes spending our hard earned income to catch a little sports entertainment. That they think we’ll be the sympathetic ear to their struggles on to play or not to play.... while the rest of us already exposed our families, lost businesses, lost employment, have struggled to support families while praying to just get back to modest, middle class living??? These people, similarly to Hollywood are becoming severely out of touch!
