By: Jessica Costello SteelerNation.com It’s time to focus on the start of this season, but you can’t help but look ahead to the possibility of losing some familiar faces. Next season, quite a few starters’ contracts are up and there’s a chance that the Pittsburgh Steelers could lose some of them. Contracts expiring include, JuJu […]

Great write up and question Jessica, thank you.

I see Vilanova / Dupree / Conner all being casulties as our CAP is the driving factor. If it really goes down as projected, how do you keep them??? Maybe restructure entire team with new lower cost contracts........(as if that will happen)..... UNLESS every player buys into it and every player takes an equal percentage cut. BIG money could be gained if Roethlisberger doesn't produce (i'm confident he does produce). It's going to be an all out off-season next year.

Someone said in another thread, Deljz i think, that this is the year because OF ALL THE REASONS COMING that will cause losing players due to cap reasoning. So here's to #7 both the on field and the trophy case.

We all gotta pray there is a season cause the Steelers will be gutted next year. I've heard this talk of salary cap reduction and Ibdont understand that at all. I thought the salary cap was essentially the CBA's way of mandating wage increase. How can they cut wages by up to 40 percent?

I dunno as long as BigBen is here they will do whatever they can to retain their own. Especially the ones they feel are harder to replace. Which would be Cam and Al. Perhaps Dupree too. Really not sold on a OT on this roster taking over for Al. Ditto the other two mentioned.

Salary cap is based on TV viewership. If this is a down year as projected then next year's cap will be as well. The NFL is god-like to some but to TV they want their moneys worth and that is in viewership ratings. My guess

If they play it will be record setting viewership. If they don't play I guess its hooped. Unless Big Ben took a massive cut he would literally have no one to play with. They would have to gut the team to keep Watt and Fitzpatrick.

I think back to that one off-season that there was a plethora of players to resign and they got it done. You know if any team can manipulate the cap it is the Steelers.

The player salary cap is based on a percentage of the league’s revenue (48.5% at most in current CBA). The tv contract is already established for this year but I would guess there is a clause if games or the season gets cancelled. They will lose revenue from tickets sales if games are cancelled or without fans plus merchandise etc.

I don't see any BR7 JangA juice floating around out there to off-set BEN's hometown break on the "cap" hit.

Normally I might agree with you but this team is fugged. They have pushed too many salaries doing what you said. Massaging the cap. Now it would still cost over 22 million to let Ben go next year. That is most of their cap space and doesn't even include reduced cap. My guess if you want to keep Watt and Fitzpatrick you will be letting Dupree and one or maybe both of Juju and Heyward.
