Chiefs safety Eric Berry has been placed on the non-football illness list after doctors discovered a lump in his chest that is suspected to be cancer.

Hate to hear these kinds of stories. The blessing, if there can be one, is that professional athletes like Berry and Olli Maatta of the Pens are surrounded by top notch doctors who often spot these things quicker than what would happen with the average person.

That really sucks, for anyone. I'll be wishing him well in his fight, and hope to see him healthy and on the field again.

It is sad that he has apparently contracted cancer, hope he can recover.
What is surprising to me is that any active player in the nfl has cancer. These guys are all young and doing the best in nutrition and likely the same since high school. What are these youngsters doing to get cancer? This is not the first case we have heard of recently.

What this tells me is that cancer is not picky and has more to do with genetics than what you eat or don't eat. Hopefully things turn out ok for him

Best of everything to yaz Eric Berry. Todays medicine make cancer not necessarily a death sentence. Hope you claim victory at least one more time.

This truly saddens me. My prayers will go out to Eric Berry and his family. Prayfully, he can recover fully...

Or could it be some supplement these guys are taking? Something that really enhances growth of muscle?

With the thousands of players in professional sports it isn't out of the statistical norm that a few active players get cancer. Hope he recovers quickly and can play again.

Really like Eric Berry and wished we had drafted him. Prayers up for him.

My sincere prayers are with Eric Berry and his family and hope they caught it in time for him to recover. I see the devastation this cruel illness does to so many people. God bless you Eric.

Tell that to pancreatic, lung, spine, and brain cancer patients.

Lymphoma is cancer jr and is easily managed by a healthy patient. Professional athletes should have no trouble making it through treatment and recovering fully. Just ask Mario Lemieux.

The best figure I have been able to find is 300 out of every million people in the united states develop cancer. It is 3 out of every 1000 in the general population. Still seems odd that I have been hearing about so many young athletes with it.

Do you think maybe steroid use, HGH use, pound the body abuse, might contribute to those numbers??

I do not know, I would not be surprised if one of the approved additives was not contributing to it. Specifically when those numbers also contain for example long term smokers that are past 50 in that 3 per 1000 group as well as other high risk activities. I am just surprised by it.
