The Coronavirus thread

You can practice and demand that bars and restaurants practice "social distancing" without mandating that all bars and restaurants have to close or go to carry out only. The CDC and WHO are going to decimate the global economy, cost thousands of businesses, and bankrupt an incredible number of individuals and families by the time this is over. Where was this concern and caution when 1 billion people world wide were infected with H1N1? We are not going to hide people from this virus forever. When this mutates and re-emerges in the fall or next spring, are we going to shut the country down again?

No, they're going to "strongly encourage" vaccine by all means necessary.

Event 201 and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are the key to understanding the unprecedented public-private response that way outstrips the actual danger.

http://www.centerforhealthsecurity.org/event201/

The Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security in partnership with the World Economic Forum and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation hosted Event 201, a high-level pandemic exercise on October 18, 2019, in New York, NY. The exercise illustrated areas where public/private partnerships will be necessary during the response to a severe pandemic in order to diminish large-scale economic and societal consequences.

Statement about nCoV and our pandemic exercise

In recent years, the world has seen a growing number of epidemic events, amounting to approximately 200 events annually. These events are increasing, and they are disruptive to health, economies, and society. Managing these events already strains global capacity, even absent a pandemic threat. Experts agree that it is only a matter of time before one of these epidemics becomes global—a pandemic with potentially catastrophic consequences. A severe pandemic, which becomes “Event 201,” would require reliable cooperation among several industries, national governments, and key international institutions.

(This is why Bill Gates just resigned from the Microsoft Board of Directors to devote energies to "philanthropic" causes IE crusading for a universal vaccine)

The same vaccine that they promote for the flu every year which is about 50-60% effective due to multiple strands and mutations of the virus. If this virus continues down the same path and 40-50% of people still contract it every year, we will be doing this same shut down every damn year.

Nothing exceeds like excess, and that is what the interweb was built for.

I think Spike's posts are mostly tongue in cheek, but are really "sold" by the more hyperbolic statements. I'd prefer that he dialed it back from 11 to about 8, but would suggest minimal censorship.

He was first on this topic in a major way, and global policy is now matching his histrionic posts from just a short while ago. I might expect that he would be amongst the first interweb experts to signal the downslope when it happens. For those not in agreement with the tenor of his posts, the ignore button exists.

He/they is more entertaining than Netflix or CNN right now imo. Then again, i have always recommended SNS platinum service.

I know that Stockholm Syndrome is when a captive starts to identify and find security in his/her captive. Is there a comparable term for when someone starts to over-identify with their Disaster Du jour?

I;m happy, actually. I will be working tonight.

so if someone needs/wants a new car, wait a few weeks for those prices to drop?

May not find a car salesman or open dealership, but the cars will still be there.

You and the ******* politics you should be ashamed.
hell the ultra liberal governors of the two most liberal states, cali and ny, have come out praising President Trump's efforts so the rest of this **** is just noise...
Yeah the Saul Alinsky model is to always politically exploit a crisis. Tibs is not going to miss the opportunity to mud sling over this.

Um, what you all meant to say was that Fox News should be banned, for purposefully misleading its audience to appease Trump. The Fox News demographic happens to be the elderly, the most vulnerable in society. They toed the line with Trump as he lied about the virus for a month and a half. Until they didn't, when Trump flipped a switch and decided overnight to start taking this seriously. So now Fox News is - all of the sudden - taking this seriously. What a joke.

But yeah, it's all partisan politics to you guys. Sad.

Where was this concern and caution when 1 billion people world wide were infected with H1N1?

Again, please stop with this comparison.

.01 > .00028

If there two COVID-19 deaths to date, you’d have a point.

I am ******* sick of this stupid argument, This is still ramping up there is no ******* way to compare those numbers at this point it will take a full years worth of data before a comparison like that can be made. JFC people use some basic mathematical logic. In the end you hopefully will be right but at this point we don't ******* know so stop making these stupid comparisons that are irrelevant at this point.

We're already 3.5 months into it for worldwide totals at least and warm weather is coming. You should be way more concerned with government perhaps forever changing the social construct/contract than you are the Toilet Paper virus in America.

Am I just pulling the warm weather defense out of a hat or wishful thinking?

Abstract
This paper investigates how air temperature and humidity influence the transmission of COVID-19. After estimating the serial interval of COVID-19 from 105 pairs of the virus carrier and the infected, we calculate the daily effective reproductive number, R, for each of all 100 Chinese cities with more than 40 cases. Using the daily R values from January 21 to 23, 2020 as proxies of non-intervened transmission intensity, we find, under a linear regression framework for 100 Chinese cities, high temperature and high relative humidity significantly reduce the transmission of COVID-19, respectively, even after controlling for population density and GDP per capita of cities. One degree Celsius increase in temperature and one percent increase in relative humidity lower R by 0.0383 and 0.0224, respectively. This result is consistent with the fact that the high temperature and high humidity significantly reduce the transmission of influenza. It indicates that the arrival of summer and rainy season in the northern hemisphere can effectively reduce the transmission of the COVID-19.

We're all going along with CDC and government isolation ideology partly for the novelty of it all.

It still hasn't inconvenienced us all that much (some more than others). It's still early and people still haven't missed more than 1-2 paychecks. For many, this is just a stay at home vacation.

If the disease doesn't manifest itself into the danger the government says, people aren't going continue to live like hermits.

I don't know where this is all headed. What changes in 2 weeks? 4 weeks? 3 months?

As some news reporters has asked: what "stat" are you looking at to see if this self-imposed isolation method and travel restrictions are working? And what "stat" are you looking at to relax said restrictions?

They have been very vague on both of those questions and people won't continue to stand by and do nothing.

So if I understand, it's OK for you to be partisan over almost any issue, including this one, but not those that may disagree with you.

Never let a crisis go to waste and turn it political, now that is truly sad.

So Zona, you're cool with how Fox News misled their viewers for weeks on end, cowtowing to Trump?

Pointing that out is 'turning it political' in your mind?

Very difficult sometimes to understand the logic around here, but I try my best.

First I've heard of this - looks like a cure - Coronavirus Australia: Queensland researchers find ‘cure’, want drug
A team of Australian researchers say they’ve found a cure for the novel coronavirus and hope to have patients enrolled in a nationwide trial by the end of the month.
University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research director Professor David Paterson told news.com.au today they have seen two drugs used to treat other conditions wipe out the virus in test tubes.
He said one of the medications, given to some of the first people to test positive for COVID-19 in Australia, had already resulted in “disappearance of the virus” and complete recovery from the infection.
Prof Paterson, who is also an infectious disease physician at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, said it wasn’t a stretch to label the drugs “a treatment or a cure”.

My business might not survive this longer than 2 weeks. I made $200 first day, made $40 today. Not looking good. We are losing $$$1000s.

I think they have an idea this thing likely will not be Code Red by mid-April and they can emerge as saviors so to speak when things start to seemingly rebound once people perceive it's safe to go back in the water again (just look what a movie did to people swimming in the ocean). There will be euphoria, spending, merriment, and baby making as after all World Wars and social distancing. Trump all but said that when he said "we're going to have one big party when this is over."

I would hope the American people would start to smell a rat and push back if we're still here in a month with the restrictions or they are more draconian. That's why part of me can't be too mad at the dumb kids at spring break lol. At some point, people will have to go on living as earlier generations did with far worse than what is to date toilet paper hysteria and not much else as far as real systemic shock other than panicked Wall Street.

WIg, not sure where you are getting those numbers from. What I have looked at from actual science basessights it is behaving and progressing pretty much how they have predicted. For REAL numbers and charts look a this sight. https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

Their figures are pretty close to the 3.6 rate.
Or if you prefer the kinder 3.6% kill rate, Well, that means 242,417 people have it.
The rest of it is based on the wildy ridiculous claim that the number of people WITH the virus is tripling every 3 days. If that were remotely true and with a 3.6% kill rate, we'd be seeing hundreds of millions if not billions of deaths. I am merely pointing out the grotesquely hyperbolic crap the media is throwing out there right now and causing people to panic.

I said a while back that he is trolling everyone. I still believe that. I mean, the guy is cheering Cuomo and hating on Trump. He is the biggest Trump homer on this board. No way he turned just like that.

Yeah, his corona virus **** is annoying, but so is mostly everything else he posts. Just gotta see it for what it is. He is trying to antagonize people. He does it all the time. And, apparently, it is working.

I think you mean... He was the biggest Trump homer on this board.

No, my point is that we're all living through this together and it's affecting all of us.

Politicizing this does absolutely nothing to make this any better, and I hope you and your family come through this unharmed, physically, emotionally, and financially.

I understand your disdain for the President, but everything does not have to be political, even in a political forum.

Uh... there have been 8,933 deaths according to the link Sojourner put up.

Since the virus broke Dec. 1st that means you are looking at 8993/75 or 119 deaths per day on average. Or did people just not get sick for the first 2 months?

I did not say the average was now that, but the daily total was approaching the average of the flu. Sorry if I did not make that clear. The point is on the current trend it will rise past what the average daily death would be from the flu. That means long term the average could reach that amount but lets hope it flattens out before then.

Are you comparing total worldwide deaths of Corona to U.S. death rates for the flu?

I don't use the medias numbers. I use real numbers and do some of mine own math. We very well may see tripling of confirmed cases soon but more so because testing increases thn anything that will bring the mortality rate down to below 1% eventually but still significantly higher than the flu until we get a vaccine and treatment. I am paying more attention to total deaths and the rate of that increase than the other numbers which are much more ambiguous at this point.

What type of business do you have Booted?

Breakfast & Lunch diner. We are located in the middle of a big college town. The college closed down. Government offices closed. There isn't many people left.
