SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — With California’s minimum wage set to increase on January 1, restaurants facing high rent and staffing costs said it’s a price they can’t afford, which is forcing some to close their doors.
“It’s bittersweet. It’s been 14 years. It’s been a good run,” said Phil Courey, the owner of Opa! Opa! Greek restaurant in East Sacramento. Courey has been at his location on J street since 2006 and was set to close on Sunday until the community stepped in and begged him on social media to stay open. “We had a couple thousand comments or responses and I wanted to take this through the holidays for my staff,” Courey said. Opa! Opa! will now remain open until December 29.
The minimum wage increase, which will hit $13 per hour, applies to businesses with 26 or more workers. Employers with fewer than 26 workers will have to pay a minimum wage of $12 per hour. When considering his operating costs, Courey said it is just unsustainable. “The wages are definitely a heavy pressure on us,” he said. “About 40 grand a year every time they jack up the minimum wage.”
Meanwhile, another popular Sacramento restaurant closed under pressure. In South Sacramento, Perry’s restaurant along Highway 99 served their final meals on Sunday. Some customers who lined up for the last meal were dismayed. “It’s really sad just thinking about this,” Patricia Smith said. “It’s an institution. This is a Sacramento institution.”
For years, Perry’s was the go-to place for cops, truckers and customers looking for late-night eats. Paul Fraga bought the business from the original owner 10 years ago. “California is a rough state to do small business,” Fraga said. “They want everybody to make $20 an hour, but for the smaller guy, I can’t afford that.”
It’s the fourth straight year the minimum wage has been increased and it’s expected to jump to $15 by 2023. Courey said the increases are hurting mom and pop restaurants. “We close our doors one-by-one, Perry’s after 50 years, today Fat City and others…you’ll see a few more closing just after the first of the year,” he said.

Yep. Mr. and Mrs. Steeltime left because we were tired of the ridiculous property tax, state income tax, terrible road maintenance, horrible traffic, and general decline in the standard of living in Southern California. Where we lived was much better than most of the County, but not long after we relocated, the homeless had began to invade a once-beautiful park that covered hundreds of acres south of our residence, graffiti was springing up on a nearby overpass, and the look was just not the same.
Congrats, California, you drove out two well-educated, employed property owners who never damaged property, respected their neighbors, volunteered for Little League and youth football. No worries, I'm sure 3 illegals and 2 homeless will take our place and make the area better.

The cost of bread is .50 a loaf
Labor cost and profit margin are calculated by percentages in most businesses... and raise in cost or labor cost result in one of two outcomes
1. Prices are raised proportionally to offset the cost increases
2. Reduction in labor or product quantity/ quality occur to offset the cost increases
So some stupid politicians decide to raise minimum wage to $2...
Inflation alway... ALWAYS adjusts for cost increases...
Soooo the bread company calculates that the minimum wage hike affected the cost of transportation, flour, and their own labor costs... they raise prices accordingly and bread settles out at $1 now...
But here is the thing... Minimum Wage went up, but nothing over that... so you started out at tge $1 minimum wage and had worked at your company for three years to earn that .50 raise... but now you are back to minimum wage... you are making double what you started out with, but its worth the same...
When you earned 1.50, you could buy 3 loaves of bread... now you earn $2, but can only buy two.
Moreover, that 100 in the bank could have bought 200 loaves... now it can only buy 100...
You lost money even though you look like you make more... all it does is wipe out the middle class... thats the only point of it... its backdoor class warfare that stupid people eat up...
She promptly told me that I didn’t understand, and that people need more money because life is expensive... she was a pretty stupid girl... people need better value, not just more... minimum wage is never the proper way to deal with that...
