An interesting look at Terrell Edmunds

I know some fans think his play is below the line. And I am not so sure that is an accurate train of thought.

Its not accurate at all. But because ESPN, NFL Network, and all the other sports media outlets focus on stats and high light reels, fans think thats the be all end all for football players.

Fantasy Football generation. Stats and splash plays are the only thing that matter. Playing gap sound defense, covering your zone, honoring backside contain...you know, fundamentals...don't matter when grading a player. :becky:

Thanks for the find and posting it slash, very good read / view.

I've liked Edmunds this year now that his role is a little better defined and he actually has help.

Salute the nation

Fitz and Nelson are the reasons the DB's have improved. Edmunds still misses too many tackles, doesn't offer good coverage. Too often, he's the closest Steelers to a completed pass. Edmunds still has not learned to turn his head on a deep ball. And he was the player who missed timed his jump on a touchdown pass vs the Cardinals.

With our pass rush, and players around him, his support is excellent, but by no means is he living up to being a first-round pick. He has not passed Ryan Clark status...and I don't think he ever will.

With everyone healthy, he might be the weakest defensive starter we have. Edmunds has 0's for interceptions, forced fumbles and QB sacks. I think he's 1st or 2nd on the team in missed tackes and has but 3 broken up passes for the season.

No--one clip posted doesn't mean he assignment sound, he's blown a few coverages this season

He's a little better in his 2nd season, but I think we are seeing his NFL celing. The best news is he's very light on the cap, and isn't injury prone.

I thought the point of the article was that Edmonds’ role now and his VERSATILITY allowed for more creativity on defense. We now have the ability to take risks and confuse, that Edmonds is solid in knowing where to go and what he is SUPPOSED to do. The writer did not say he never missed a play or tackle. Ok, so he was a first rounder, that doesn’t mean he isn’t important. Maybe what HE is doing is allowing the others to make the plays THEY are making. A few observers think enough of his GOOD play to point it out in media, but I guess they should have asked you for your opinion before wasting everyone’s time with their driveling.

You don't watch the games, you don't know the defensive assignments, you really don't know anything....

Edmunds is not a splash play guy as of now and when Fitz, Haden and Hilton(last few years) routinely do make those plays I think it makes solid play look bad. But look at Steven Nelson and his play. Very solid CB and rarely is out of position. But he wasn’t a first round pick so we excuse it. Bottom line Edmunds plays has improved steadily and I feel once he starts playing more instinctually and less with his head we will start seeing more splash plays. He’s only a second year player guys.

I still can't believe he missed that INT last week. when that ball left Murry's hand and they panned the camera over. the first thing I said was," what a terrible throw". that's going to be INT. then 2 seconds later I said, " WTF how did he miss that". oh well **** happens, he's been pretty stable back there. He should only get better as time goes by.

he took a horrible angle on the long TD pass last week...could of been a huge factor if we lost that game..

He needs to make that play if he wants to be considered at the very least a "meets expectation" safety for the Steelers.

This is his second year, and he is receiving the snaps to improve his play...but IMHO still needs to improve on his situational awareness and ball skills.

More like you don't participate in the game day thread. At least we know those posters watch the game.

I don't think anyone here can prove Edmunds is more Assignment sound than the other DB's. He's not. He's feel for Zone needs work and he's not a good man to man cover guy.

One clip the shows he had his man covered is just that. One clip.

Oh, please. I watch the games and there’s a good reason why Fitzpatrick has the stats and Edmunds does not. One is a playmaker and the other is consistently a half second or half a step away from making a play. Edmunds is above line defending the run, but well below the line defending the pass. You can count on one hand the his career PDs and INTs. I think he would be better suited playing linebacker.

Even when a defense is full of 1st rounders everyone can't be great. I hated the Edmunds pick but he leads the team in solo tackles and isn't horrible. Everyone can't be a superstar on defense. With the way Tombert picks and coaches DBs he's doing great.

anyone else get a virus warning from clicking that site?

I agree with the most of this article/ post, but I would say Edmunds has taken some dumb penalties. He is often not quite there on plays ala last weeks mistimed jump. That said the guy plays a ton of snaps and their back end is far better than it was. Not all of that can be Fitzpatrick. I would rather have a solid guy that ascends, than an Artie Burns who starts out strong and then gets benched.

That's about it. Maybe another team takes him early, but there were plenty of analysts who felt Edmunds should've been a later pick. You need some of those "glue" players on a team and Edmunds is that for the defense. You always hope for better, but I'll take that with a late first-round pick.

I think that his awareness and improvement with an outstanding safety in the mix is very encouraging. To say that he's reached his ceiling is premature and somewhat arrogant.

STFU you of all people have no business questioning who watches what.

Perhaps now would be a good time to take another interesting look at Edmunds?

I still think he was expecting the ILB to stay with the guy. He looked like he was playing something else inside. Of course I really couldn't tell. But he sure wasn't moving like that was his guy.

Not just based off this game alone but he isn’t good. He misses a lot of tackles and he’s obviously atrocious in coverage. He’s the weak link on this defense without question. Also, Nelson was picked on badly tonight and he better expect it weekly after putting that on tape.

Yeah that looked like a miscommunication between two players.
