There were plenty of things wrong with the Steelers yesterday, but their backup quarterback said it was all his fault.

Via Kevin Gorman of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, new starter Mason Rudolph said the burden should fall on him, after the Steelers fell to 0-3 with a loss at San Francisco.

“We just came out slow,” Rudolph said. “I’m more to blame than anyone.”

Actually, Rudolph threw a pair of second-half touchdowns, and gave the Steelers a fourth-quarter lead in his first start in place of the injured Ben Roethlisberger. He was 14-of-27 for 174 yards and an interception to go with the two scoring passes, for a thoroughly average passer rating of 81.4.

Specifically, Rudolph said they needed to be able to capitalize on turnovers. The Steelers created five of those, but the offense only turned those possessions into a pair of field goals in the first half.

“We’ve got to get more out of it,” Rudolph said. “A lot of that falls on my shoulders, getting us in the end zone and converting on possession downs. . . .

“No doubt. I told Cam [Heyward] that. That game’s on us. We had so many opportunities, with the turnovers in the first half and the momentum swing with the defense. We’ve got to put more points on the board for you guys.”

The learning process is ongoing for Rudolph, but the Steelers may have to ask him to do more Other than a 76-yard pass to JuJu Smith-Schuster, Rudolph averaged 3.8 yards per attempt.

Hey now. In the media-session interviews the day before the game, Tomlin made it VERY clear that the TEAM had to step up and support Rudy.

Not the coaches! The TEAM. I don't see how we can blame this one on Fichtner or Tomlin. He was very adamant that the TEAM was the thing.

I thought Tomlin talked to the WRs and gave them a chewing out. That didn't solve anything?

He was helping them to unleash hell

I wonder how many times a day he wishes he didn't say that?... Actually I wonder if he knows he said that?

His thoughts don't work in concert to accentuate the positive...

Good for Mason. Imho, the bulk of the loss is on his shoulders...he flat out sucked 1st half.

I only saw his first two series as I had to take my Grandson to cub scouts. From those 2 series, the offensive play calling was well - totally offensive!!! How the hell can you blame the kid (or can he blame himself for that matter) for not getting into the endzone with the plays that were called. Sorry, but we would have kicked field goals even if Ben (the young gunslinger Ben) was at QB. No - that distinction goes to Fitchner by a freakin' long shot... I could have called a better offensive game than he did - and I know nothing about offensive strategy!

Good to see this step in leadership from this young guy.

Yeah, refreshing to see and about the only good little piece of news to come out of this shitstorm.

He didn't execute...he sailed throws over open WRs. Bad plays or not...he didn't do anything to help his cause. The oline didn't block well either....especially run block.

He looked appreciably better in the 2nd half.

I look at the clutch. I thought he stepped up in the second half. That is the good. The bad is he didn't succeed with the game on the line. Not sure if this kid has the IT factor. I think it is possible he develops into a solid QB. Not sure about anything past that.

If we were playing Steeler football we wouldn't need any more than a solid QB. Seriously.

And how very humble of him to shoulder the blame in his 1st NFL start

Yeah, know ****, right. If he didn't already get some respect from his veteran teammates, he sure did today.
