Agree violently with every word except the 'quality orator' part - that was the immediate giveaway. Doesn't have natural command of the language. Oratory comes off the same (ergo the mimic) as all the rest of the package to me. Was vehemently against this kid from the beginning and at every point since. But Arty isn't a football guy. He doesn't see it. I seriously doubt that he looks beyond W/Ls and bottom line, and probably in random order. You see that in all the decisions. The Fitz decision was too obvious - you had to do that (my reasoning - critical need addressed immediately with an excellent known quantity v a future unknown, regardless of draft position. The skills, experience and CAP all work - no brainer. Anyway...)

So Shades is here for the foreseeable future. Bump him up to 'übercoach' or some such nonsense title so he can sit in the owners suite and play with blocks. Hire some real coaches and get on with it.

Too many people still think Butler runs the D. Tomlin has been running it since LeBeau left. Go read some of Dulac and others stuff over at the PG. Dulac even had comments on it in his Q&A session yesterday. Tomlin is definitely the problem with our D. That is why I was hoping we would see Butler gone after last year as that would have hopefully meant Rooney finally had the balls to tell Tomlin to get someone in there to run the D and for him to stay as the head coach. Maybe after this season that will happen.

I meant that he gets a pass from the ownership. He got a contract extension this year. Shades will be here at least through 2021 unless he leaves on his own (not likely). The namesakes of the Rooney Rule are not going to fire the team's first black head coach.

Jim Wexell adores Mike Tomlin the person and coach. Several years ago he wrote, "Mike Tomlin is the most intellectual coach I've ever been around." (he wasn't there for Noll)

In reading his work through the years, Mike Tomlin is the absolute last place Wex will look when assigning blame for disappointing results.

Furthermore, Wex has written openly that he feels he was too hard on Cowher by '03 -- as a young sportswriter -- and this informs how he views Tomlin.

Wexell wrote after the Jags debacle, "Tomlin won't fire Butler because he would be firing himself."

To me, considering the source, that's gospel to those paying attention and coming from a man who is infatuated with Mike Tomlin the man and HC of the Steelers.

except they aren't in a 3-4 most of the time anymore. They are in a nickle with only 2 "Bigs". I don't even think most of us are upset about being in nickle a lot due to modern spread offenses. That is just where the game has evolved. Folks (me included) would like to see them keep 3 bigs on the DL and drop one of the 4 LB's for another DB. a 3-3-5 instead of a 2-4-5 so to speak.

I am all for replacing Mike Tomlin. We have the big bodies to switch to a 4-3 now. We could put Buggs in the middle with Hargrave and run Tuitt and Heyward outside. They could even move Heyward and Tuitt inside if the wanted and put Watt at DE. Don't think you want Dupree at DE.

The funny thing is we use this 2-4-5, he can still use 3-3-5 and not lose his 5 DB's, but he has to have 4LB's on the field, which makes no ******* senses, Cam, Hargrave, Tuitt are 3 of our best players on D, right now only one LB is getting it done, Watt, Bush is a rookie.
Having an extra big body in front of Bush would help him, it would help the push pocket vs the pass and be more stout vs the run.
