Of COURSE they have to run the ball. They have essentially a rookie QB and a highly questionable receiving corps. The question is, why the **** didn't they run the ball EARLIER in the season?

They TRIED to run the ball but got stuffed with a bunch of 2 yd runs, then they got behind.

Can't run, can't pass, can't win.

Better hope for a defensive miracle.

NFL Week 3: Key Matchups And Prediction For Steelers-49ers Game

The 49ers will look to start 3-0 for the first time since 1998 when they host the Steelers in Week 3.

Fresh off a dominating 41-17 road win over the Cincinnati Bengals, Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers are looking for their first 3-0 start since the 1998 season.

San Francisco put up the fifth-most yards in franchise history in the 24-point win and continued to pressure the quarterback at a great clip in the blowout win.

San Francisco’s pass rush remained relentless last week against the Bengals. It recorded another six quarterback hits and three sacks of Andy Dalton. Though, it was the likes of Arik Armstead, Solomon Thomas and Ronald Blair who dialed up the pressure. The 49ers now have six defensive linemen with at least one full sack through two games.

Nick Bosa will be tasked with getting consistent pressure on young Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph.

On offense, San Francisco must attack what are considerable weaknesses on Pittsburgh’s defense. That includes getting the ball to George Kittle early and often. Opposing quarterbacks have put up nearly 1,000 yards with a 71 percent completion rate and 117.1 passer rating when targeting tight ends against the Steelers over the past 18 games.

Jimmy Garoppolo and Co. should also attack the boundaries with Marquise Goodwin and Deebo Samuel. He’s completed 12-of-16 passes for 188 yards when targeting the two this season. Meanwhile, the Steelers have yielded an overall 131.3 passer rating on the season.

George Kittle vs Devin Bush

The expectation here has to be that Bush will take over for Mark Barron on obvious passing downs for the Steelers. He’s their next great hope after Pittsburgh has been torched by tight ends on a never-ending loop since the start of last season. Sure Minkah Fitzpatrick could also play a role here, but we’re expecting him to see somewhat limited action in his Steelers debut.

Seattle hadn't scored a point in Pittsburgh since that time either. Every game stands on its own. 49ers fans have false hope about their season. We may not be as good as we are without a fully healthy Big Ben but this team isn't going to roll over like Miami did.

I remember that game a little, I think it was in the rain. I think Garner gashed us that game, they out gained us, but we still won some how.

Steelers pass blocking for the past 2+ years has been very good. Rudolph will have adequate time. I just hope he doesn't stand back there and pat the ball, letting the pass rushers get to him.

I am more concerned with the run blocking. "Oh, they'll have 8 in the box, wahhhh!!" **** that. The 5 lineman, the TE and a WR can take on 7 defenders. The 8th guy is 8 yards from the ball carrier when the play starts. Let the line, TE, WR do their jobs, get the RB into the secondary, and have the RB break a goddamn tackle for once.

Hello, if the WRs can't get separation and get open that's exactly what will happen. Hopefully they adjust the playbook and get the TE involved more early this time

Dink n dunk, whatever keeps the chains moving. I wouldn't mind some deep shots to Washington to loosen them up either. I really hope they find a way to score early

How many times have they played there? Twice? Three times?
 
Based on youtubes I've seen, Mason loves the playaction game. The problem is that our passing game so far has not be a threat, so opposing defenses can stack the line, and blitz a few extra guys, trying to get into a young QB's head. Game adjustments are what is needed. We're really good at that, so that's good.

I predict this game will be ugly.

I think we have more on the pass rush side than they do. I'd like to see how their OL holds up because they have the same as us - NOBODY behind Jimmy G. He better be ready - this week's secondary, for the Steelers, will be the best we've seen in a decade.

The goal will be to minimize Kittle's impact - get that done - W for the good guys...
 
Trap game for the 49ers?



Week three against the Steelers could be a trap game for the 49ers

Without Ben Roethlisberger leading the offense, the Steelers should not be much of a challenge for the San Francisco 49ers. However, it's that factor as to why this is a trap game for the 49ers.

The San Francisco 49ers are starting down a potential 3-0 record that can be easily accomplished this Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. What was originally looking like a challenging game for the 49ers is now looking like a simple walk in the park. Without Ben Roethlisberger under center, the Steelers are just a shell of themselves on offense.

Second year quarterback Mason Rudolph takes over the starting role with Roethlisberger out for the season. Given how dominate the 49ers defense has been, it's hard to imagine Rudolph having success on Sunday in a hostile environment. The Steelers defense hasn't been that great either, so the 49ers offense should be able to put up points against them.

It is a home game after all. They should be feeling the electricity to close out this game. These are the types of games that the San Francisco 49ers have to put away. However, the Steelers can be easily overlooked, which can cause a bit of complacency for the 49ers. That is why this could be a trap game for them. Seeing how the Steelers are without their starting quarterback, it is easy to believe that the 49ers have that game already won.

But the players can't be thinking that. Their mindset has to be a vicious one come Sunday. The Steelers know how much of an underdog they are for this game. No one really envisions them being a threat to good teams, but there has been plenty of cases where good teams play down to the level of their opponent. The coaching staff of the 49ers has to get their guys focused.

No excuses will be tolerated for why they lost against the Steelers who are without Ben Roethlisberger. There are still a couple of threatening players on that offense like James Conner and JuJu Smith-Schuster. However, even those two weren't as explosive with Roethlisberger. That doesn't mean the 49ers should sleep on them.

If those two are taken away, then the Steelers offense will be lucky to score more than 17 points. They are going to struggle sustaining drives with Rudolph, who is making his first ever regular season start. This is a game where the 49ers defense boosts their stats. A multiple sack and interception stat sheet is well within their grasp.

I definitely buy the Steelers as a trap game for SF. I also buy that we need a new HC when we are a trap game for anyone. That is not acceptable.
