Ben to IR, out for season

IF Rudolph plays well the rest of the year, no way in hell do you put him back on the bench next year. The Apnly Way Ben gets the job back next year is IF the QB position turns into a dumpster fire, this year

He would have to be as good as Ben to replace him unless you want a less talented QB playing right? You think Mason would beat Ben out in a real competition? Not likely.

MT... never coached a losing season. A successful win percentage. 2 Super Bowl appearances. Built-up the most prolific Steelers offense in franchise history at the height of the killer Bs.

Yet...

Pete Carroll on the hot seat? Sean Peyton on the hot seat?

Yes, because Seattle and New Orleans don't give a flying @#$% about what those coaches did in 2009 or 2013-2014 seasons. Both franchises know they have superb QB's, very good running backs, and the coaches either get the teams deep into the playoffs every year or leave.

Wish the Steelers shared that view.

And yes, Tomlin has shat upon this franchise. The defense - the one that regularly gets raped by any accurate QB, the one that gave up 420+ yards and 27 points or more to such luminaries as Mike Glennon, Bruce Gradkowski, Matt Cassel, Ryan Tannehill, rookie Dak Prescott, etc., and lost to Terrelle Pryor and Tim Tebow - is his. All his.

How many NFL teams lost to both Terrelle Pryor and Tim Tebow? One, I think.

So this defense, which gets destroyed by the Patsies**** every goddamn time, which repeats the same mistakes over and over and over and over and over and over, is Tomlin's.

As to some other Tomlin specialties - losing to terrible teams, a habit that dates back the past 11 years. Last year's debacle at Oakland was just the most recent. And the genius does not call timeouts when Oakland is at the 5 yard line and ready to take the lead?!? Oh, gee, that didn't hurt at the end of the game, did it?

Mike Tomlin inherited a team filled with great players, several of whom are HOF players - Ben, Troy, Faneca, Harrison, Taylor, Ward, Miller, Hampton, Farrior, Holmes - and won a SB. So did Barry Switzer. Tomlin is black Barry Switzer. Mediocre coach who lucked into a great roster, won a SB on the backs of his predecessor, but who has no business leading the franchise.

None.

If at the start of next season Ben comes back healthy & good to go AND Rudolph shows he’s a surefire starting QB, we should count our blessings and run out to buy lottery tickets. That would be a high class problem to have, one that 31 other teams would love to be burdened with. Let’s not put the cart before the horse and see how the season plays out. I hope Rudolph goes out and lights it up, starting this Sunday. And I wish Ben the best for surgery and rehab. Based on his statement he’ll be 100% behind Rudolph and the Steelers. I plan to follow his lead.

1. Whether the injury is caused by a hit in the game or not is irrelevant.
2. Our players are ******* STUPID for admitting that Ben was hurt last week, someone needs to tell them to shut up
3. If the NFL cracks down on the Steelers for manipulating the injury report we could easily lose a draft pick because of it.
4. Loose lips sink ships.

A good (or half-decent) coach would be the person to do that.

Ben plays when healthy. I don't think there is any doubt of that fact.

This. If this team can be productive and produce wins under MR than they should be that much better with a healthy BB.

No QB is taking this team anywhere with our current coaching, especially on D.
Did you see Wilson's stats? Mind-blowing.
Did you see their rushing stats? We got gashed.

There's not one thing this D can do well to secure a victory and I'm not blaming the players when their assignments and game plan in general is so retarded.

You couldn't have said it any better. Vader (I think) alluded to the predictability with which these morons operate when a Patriots player blurted out that "The Steelers, they've been running the same defensive scheme for years" or something like that. Actually Brady himself has said it before. When you love something (like we do the Steelers), sometimes you become blind to the imperfections or just learn to live with them and hope upon hope that things will get better.

At least that's the way it's been for me. My eyes are fully open though and my state of denial has passed. These guys are so ******* delusional when they think they're outsmarting people, and I think part of it is they're's so much greatness & tradition that goes with Steelers defense, that they must think that merely putting on the Black & Gold garb gives them a leg up. Touching the steel-plated football decal on the wall helps give them superpowers. Tomlin's arrogance and delusion know no bounds to me after I saw the way he spoke to that reporter at halftime in Foxboro. Then you think back to San Diego last season, or Jacksonville in the playoffs, or the Patriots part VII, or back to Tebow & Denver and you can't help but think "holy ****, I'm Shallow Hal and I've been hypnotized by Tony ************* Robbins".

And now Ben's gone for the foreseeable future?:disturbed:

Irrelevant, the Steelers have bigger problems than a back-up QB for the reminder of the season. Ben Roethlisberger did not become the franchise QB for the Steelers when he did had Tommy Maddox not gotten injured. This Steeler team needs a legit DC not Mike Tonlin's errand boy.I can't believe Danny Smith still has a job fer crissakes! Dan McCullars got penalized for a ST no no. WTF do they do in practice??
Watching the Steelers anymore is no longer exciting, it's downright nauseating. I'm getting better excitement watching paint dry.

These coaches and players are being given millions of dollars to their jobs, no one should get a free pass to suck this year.

This season to me will be very interesting, a referendum on Rudolf as a potential franchise qb as he claimed to be at his draft time, and Tomlins ability to make what is now 100% his roster into a solid team, and the drafting of the front office.

If the team or Rudolf stinks it up, we need to consider another high draft pick at QB and a new head coach. I'm not saying they half to win the division, but they need to be competitive.

Love ya Ben, cheering hard for all of them, but there is a lot on the line this year, unless our owner is cool with another decade like the 80's

I want Mason to ball out because he is our future QB, but man this sucks. Ben is by far the most fun player I've watched play the game. There are few quarterbacks who can do what he did for so long and I hope this isn't the last time we get to see him in action.

No but Tomlin will get a pass.

We already see what a 99% Tomlin team is, which is 9-7-1 and an awful defense.

Tomlin isn't going anywhere until HE wants to. The namesakes of the Rooney Rule are not going to fire their first Rooney Rule hire.

I'm going to get ready and grow back my mullet.

Question about Mason Rudolph, coming from a guy that didn't really watch him in college or armchair scout him very much (Coach & 4 minutes of YT highlights). I heard he worked out of the shotgun a lot etc. at OSU but haven't looked at much besides his regular stats.

All that long-winded **** aside, I've heard people complain he has a pop-gun arm. That flea-flicker he underthrew JuJu on, he still got 50+ yards of air under it and he had to get that one off quick. That's a pretty good-sized arm to me (maybe middle of the pack NFL, probably better). So while he's no Ben roethlisberger, isn't that still plenty of arm to get it done in the NFL?

It wasn't irrelevant to the discussion I was having about Mason and Ben.

He’ll be a Chad Pennington type. Solid but he’s not going to win you SBs. IMO.

Ron, I hear you on the Rooney's being hitched to Tomlin, but if as many here have predicted without Ben they turn into a bottom 1/3 of the league team, its tough to not say
Tomlin isnt exposed and should be canned. You're right it still might not happen tho...

And I am NOT hoping they crater, but its put up or shut up for Tomlin now

He has more arm than Pennington. My issue with him in college was he was a typical system QB. He isn't Ben. He doesn't have his arm and he doesn't have his ability to move safeties around. Most can't. You might be able to build a team around Rudolph. But I still think Ben plays next year and maybe the year after.

Ben gives Tomlin a built in excuse. Especially if Conner is hurt as well. I still think this team has some talent on it. They aren't losing a bunch of games. I can see them winning 6-8 games this year.

I totally agree and the situation might lend itself to the Steelers becoming more of s well rounded offense. They have nothing to lose now. Throw Snell out there with a blocker and see if he can give us that power running game I've missed for the past 10 years or so. The whole game plan shouldn't have to hinge on this kid's arm.

I'm watching and he's got plenty more arm than Pennington. What Pennington did well (actually watched him) was with anticipation and timing on short/intermediate routes, and Rudolph just quickly judging from his college highlights, wasn't the best there.

I'm still not sure though what the metrics are that made Baker Mayfield #1 overall and Mason Rudolph a 3rd round pick.

All NFL QBs can throw it 50+yards in the air, I bet everyone of them can throw it 60+, but it's the air they have to put under the ball, those ropes Ben threw 15 yards downfield on an out pattern or in, Mason can't make that throw with as much velocity as Ben, thus the ball won't get there as quickly.

I'm a fan, not a football expert. I did watch every snap Rudolf took as a proud Oklahoma State alum.

To answer your questions IMO:

-OSU never went under center in his time there, they even went shotgun in the victory formation

-He was at his best throwing the deep ball, particularly to Washington. He also threw outs to the sidelines well with plenty of arm.

-He struggled with intermediate timing throws across the middle and short passes to his RB's. Footwork, throwing well under the rush, and mobility were a big problem in college but he claims to have worked hard on that in PIT

-I never saw him as worth a 1st round pick or franchise QB talent in the NFL. He is a 1st class person and teammate

I'm cheering for him hard! I hope this helps some

That's what I would do and it sounds smart. So I'm sure Tomlin has already dismissed it and will probably go 5 wide and use a hurry up offense.

I didn't care for Mayfield. I don't like small QBs and I don't like running QBs. So that made me not like Mayfield right away. I like the tall bigger pocket QBs that develop their game for the NFL level. I'd rather have Rudolph than Mayfield. The problem with Mason was that he was a system QB as well. He struggled with timing and precision throws.
