By Logan Leslie SteelerNation.com After an absolutely embarrassing effort in Week 1, we expected to see a hungry Ben Roethlisberger ready to light up a Seattle Seahawks defense which allowed for Andy Dalton to have a career day in Week 1. Instead, we saw more of the same on offense in the first quarter, stalled […]

The offense totally changed with Rudolph in, but the question is why? We started doing screens and quick passes and it was working much better. Why were they not running this with Ben? Is Ben calling the plays when he is in there or did the OC just adjust....Regardless Rudolph looked good for being thrown into the fire. Moncrief and Grimble both dropped balls. Other than t the failed 2pt play Rudolph had us going well

I liked what I saw from him besides the two pointer INT.

The one Juju catch could have been thrown a little more in stride as it kind of floated a little.

But plenty of positives beyond that.

It didn't look too big for him.

Which is a good starting point.

Well, he was no Kordell Stewart, which is good.

He looked to have control of his game, which gives us hope.
Got to admit, I know nothing of him but I'll do a complete analysis of him in the next few days. See how he reads and reacts to different defenses, arm strength etc.

I highly recommend youtube highlights and see what Walter Football thinks. It will help you form an opinion.

Still confused?

Well then tape measure Rudolph's head about 1/8" above his ear, across the mid forehead, completely circling his head. Hold the tape firmly, but not too tightly for best results.

I loved the fact that prior to his first snap that while he was standing in the huddle the camera zoomed in on him captured him as he winked at one of the OL and smiled.

No pressure for this kid.

I liked what I've seen of young Mr.Rudolph so far. Very poised, relaxed in the pocket, made some nice throws, seems to really know the playbook well, good footwork, ya, I'm ok with Mason leading this team. Too bad he got Moncreifed like Ben did, but yes I think the kid did very good.
Now he has a week to take all the reps and prepare for SF and we shall see next Sunday. Personally, I'm sure I'll catch a lot of crap for this, but I always thought he was a better QB than the turd over in Cleveland. Just sayin'.

I'm encouraged but what I saw yesterday from Rudolph.
It's only his first action, he didn't start, and the Seahawks didn't gameplan for him.
He made some mistakes and most of his throws were shorter/safer routes.
However, as noted, he did not look lost/overwhelmed.
I would like to see him with a full week of work as the starter leading up to and starting a full game before I judge.
But he certainly brought some much needed energy to the team.

I would say this. Ben is trying to play the offense like he still had Brown. Where if the play goes beyond three or four steamboats the defense is dead. He is missing quite obvious gains early in the progression for a bigger play. Mason just took the first thing given.

Big Ben is hurt. You could see him trying to shake off the pain a couple of times. Why no time out from the bench and insert Mason then?

Then the debacle of the Moncrief failed catch resulting in an interception. This was thrown by Rudolph but it was a near perfect throw. Ben or Mason would have had the same result. What is encouraging is that Mason didn't panic as most backups do.

I would announce now that Rudolph is starting in SF to give everyone time to realize they need to pick up their game if Pittsburgh is going to get back into being competitive.

Big Ben needs rest he's not 24 anymore. Mason Rudolph is ready; the question is are some of the others also ready to step up?

I have a feeling Ben will be having season ending surgery on his elbow which could might lead him to retire.

The offense changed when he came in like all offenses change when a young QB comes in on any team, they go to more high % plays, dumb down the playbook as most say. It has nothing to do with Ben calling the plays.
Rudolph looked solid, I'll have to see more of him when teams can game plan for him etc.

I believe this also. Its obvious it was all about AB drawing double coverage on every play, still getting open, and the other guys benefiting from that

None of these guys can do that and Ben just waits and waits while they are all blanketed in single coverage. The deep plays are gone so more underneath stuff is the only thing there is and Mason is looking good identifying that and using the TE more.

The old playbook just doesnt work anymore and forcing the ball to one player wont work either, especially without a running game

I lived through the Cliff Stoudt, Mark Malone, Neil O'Donnell, Kordell Stewart, Tommy Maddox era. So far he's a far better start than much of what we had in the post-Bradshaw era.

Did I miss something? Did Coach change his name??

First impressions, this kid has the potential to be our future. Right now he is the present and we need to see what we have in him for the next 14 games. The game plan will change somewhat to make him comfortable but with a game on the road against SF, we need to make sure they let the ball fly as well.

I thought we abandoned the run again yesterday. Only 16 rushing attempts for the game. We're not sure how badly Conner is hurt. Samuels and Snell are going to have to step it up to make sure this kid isn't throwing 40-50 balls a game,

I've been saying it for years, the passing game has set up the run here, not the other way around. This Oline is supposed to be top 3 in the NFL, they can not just go out there and take a game over run blocking, that's the issue. They are not a very good run blocking Oline, they are built to pass protect, and run from the spread O, another reason why we suck at short yardage.

I was teasing with cooch's approach to evaling in mind.

You might want to review my pre draft stuff on Rudolph. I was high on him.

Or see what I said about Dk metcalf or warnings about Bush short comings. I’ll save you some time, it was accurate.

By the way on Rudolph the a knock on him was smaller hands and fumble prone. He’s sharp and interviews well. I see some parts in his game that Brady has and think they have a similar playing style. Not saying he will be nearly as good, just similarities in size and playing style. Just one game but Mason looks very competitive.
