We have signed WR Johnny Holton to our practice squad.

Outstanding. He still might be back on the roster sooner than later IMO.

Nice find and post slash.

I like he is tied up now. I hope the IR is legitamite injury to make room, we will see on who it is. In any event if he makes the 53, he will contribute.

Why the hell did we wait?

Did we not know we had one player exempt?

This makes absolutely zero sense.

Perhaps they were planning on finding a good option at tight endor still are, and they are keeping options open,. But needed to do something with holton by today. But the TE option hasn't come available. Sounds like they plan on using McDonald in the 5 wide situations. Idk speculating.

Raider is holding Gentry's spit on the practice squad. Idk how they are getting holton to the 53, except for phantom it injury.

I think you are right.

Ok,someone explain to me.

1-so if he was cut, does that mean any team could have picked him up?
2- I am assuming not everyone is eligible for ps designation. What are the eligibility rules.
3-does ps squad count against salary cap?
4- how many years can you spend on ps squad, and does that count as years of service in NFL...as in for your pension eligibility.
5- re salary....is there a set salary for ps squad? Max or Minimum?

There is the reality of the information that comes out to the public and then there is the part that they talk about. The maneuvers that happen behind the scenes. It very easily could have been this. Holton is the 6th receiver. They planned to keep 6 receivers on the active roster, but needed to get through the initial cut down. They told him they were cutting him, but he will be brought on the 53 after they IR another player, before the season or lets be honest somewhere down the line their will be an IR. They risked him hitting the market, but did have a handshake deal to bring him back. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he was on the active roster before game 1.

I would have put Layne on IR and brought him up to be at least your return man. Does anyone know if he was one of the gunners on ST?

1) To their roster yes, and that applies to the waiver claim rules. To PS it's up to the player where they want to go. They can refuse a PS designation. See Ayres, Matt Thomas
2) True, too many rules and nuances, google practice squad rules
3) yes
4) See #2 but generally under 3 years of service and can't be on a PS for longer than 3 years.
5) PS salaries are set by the CBA.

What I don’t think people realize is that the ps is a separate roster... you don’t just demote a guy to it.... you cut them then they are a ufa and can opt to sign or not... it’s pretty common for a cut guy to explore other options before signing with a ps...

i hope this was the case but why him?
it seems as tho they could have done this deal with a variety of guys and not risk having holton grabbed by another team
i would think there are other players on the team or ps that had less of a chance to get signed based on their preseason production
i assume a player has the right to refuse being signed to another teams 53?

I don't understand why he was PSed at all. Especially if they are going to activate him today. Perhaps they aren't IRing anyone? Weird...

Its a good question. This guy should not just be on the 53 but he should be dressed and active every Sunday until he shows he doesn't belong. Think he's a diamond for us.

Maybe they were waiting for RSJ to clear and they were going to waive Gentry....IDK

TRUE, but that would be giving up a nice raise and possibly playing time to show-case your wares. Highly doubt a player would turn down a roster spot. That player would probably contact their original team and ask what their plan was and then he'd weight it out and make decision. There was a reason for said player being on PS or FREE Agent so original team kinda already made that decision.
