Like I know it's far fetched but I wonder if anyone has ever checked. Dude is in his 6th year. Fully pensioned NFL player. He has 3 starts and 38 tackles. 2 and a half sacks. Like are you ****** kidding me. As a coach wouldn't you say to yourself I just can't look at this sack of **** anymore. And frankly he has looked the best I've ever seen him this preseason. But that would be one thing if we are talking year one to two. Wouldn't you look at this Mondeaux kid and say maybe he could be something. If Gravedigger is injured or leaves in FA there is literally no way he will start. I've coached a lot of youth and HS football. We have had first off the bus guys who are huge and useless. This is the NFL. At this point they are not scared of Mongo.

For whatever it is worth. The announcers during the national broadcast seemed to have a lot of good things to say about him. I would not say you can measure his worth by stats alone. If he is doing his job right(and I am not saying he is) He is there to clog **** up and draw double teams. WHEN he plays hard he is a beast. I have seen him destroy people. I think his only problem is keeping the motor running every play.

Because of his enormous size they are enamored and willing to him more chances than most to show something.

If he could do any of those things with even the slightest bit of consistency he would be a starter. His stance is literally ***. Like I said Hargraves goes down, who starts. Big Dan? I dont think so.
And if you were him at this point wouldn't you have some kinda pride. I can't sit on the sideline anymore and watch all these ******* play. I'm hiring a coach and a trainer and I'm gonna start or I'm ****** going to die trying.

He's an enigma for sure.

I wouldn't take it to hard that he will never be a starter. At this point, he is satisfied with the role he has. Tomlin is satisfied as well. Is there better, I'm sure there is but he is a "safe" player and more than likely cap friendly.

Edit: I'm perplexed too as to how he has managed to stay on this team so long.

Salute the nation

He certainly is cap friendly, but it works out to about 125k per tackle. Just very hard to believe. All these guys busting their *** and so close to the cut line, and this dude keeps making it. He has one special team. I'm not sure if he has more than one block. I never feel like their short yardage defense is super strong. You cut Holton, Roger's, Spencer and somehow Mongo makes it again.

Big Dan has improved. I think his job would be to get a push to free up pass rushers and clog running lanes.

I think he is capable in a relief role...

The answer is 'no'. While I'm not a Big Dan fan, I went back and rewatched all the preseason games (today) and he has improved. I met his aunt and uncle a few years back when I was at NC State - nice couple (I think I have their number in my phone still LOL). I know Coach Tomlin's wife's best friend - she's a waitress down in Sarasota (think I'll go see her for a game this year)...

I've seen him in regular season games that count against real NFL talent and he isn't that good. He's been here 6 years and had 5 tackles all last year. He had 1 tackle the year before that. I don't care about pre-season games. When the game counts they don't put him in.

I said he improved - let's not think I'm waving pom poms for him LOL...

Javon Hargrave will be a free agent next year. Don’t think the Steelers can afford him. So there’s that

Big Dan has been just good enough to make this roster every year. Everyone has a different path, and Big Dan becoming dominant is only a positive, no matter how long it takes. Mondeaux is on the PS and will develop. Right now the best DLs are on this roster.

Big Dan is just fine for what he does. I watched him in all the preseason games and he did what he was supposed to do, he clogged the middle made a few tackles and when he was supposed to, he collapsed the pocket and pressured the QB. It's not only my opinion, PFF had him ranked pretty high. I know, I know PFF has some serious issues, but his effective play per snap was pretty high. Plus he has improved every year so far. Bottom line he is a Steeler, and I will support all the Steelers. I'll reserve throwing shade towards the Pats, Browns, Ravens, Bengals and the Raiders receiving corps.

I used to think Kordell Stewart had blackmail pictures on Coach Cowher for years. I think it was all that money invested in that new contract. Had to be and they didn't have anyone else worth a **** at the time.

Big Dan isn't that bad,he just isn't that good. He's obviously just good enough for reliable depth on the short term if needed.

He was better 3 years ago when he had 17 tackles and 5 QB hits. The past two years he hasn't done anything. 6 tackles in 2 years ain't cutting it. He is rarely used and he doesn't fit Tomlin's idea of a NG. He is nothing like Hargrave.

He is also far away from being dominant. We will have to see how much he sees the field. It isn't worth having him for 12 snaps a year. It's a waste of a roster space.

Kozora has reported from camp that he has vastly improved. He seems to pinpoint his turnaround being Dunbar replacing Mitchell as DLine coach. Apparently Dunbar has gotten through to him. I point this out because those Depot guys were ice cold on McCullers since the day he was drafted and have admitted that he's improved into a roster-worthy guy in the past couple of years.

Then why has his playing time been cut. Why is he never in games? Why do they run a 2 DL goal line set? It makes no sense.

Evidence of his 5 combined tackles last year. I clearly see he did improve this spring but we aren't usually talking about 6th year improvement as a reason to get a roster spot.

I'm guessing because he's the #6 DL instead of a guy who was headed for unemployment.

Unless there's nobody else pushing him off the roster.

So in 6 years they can't find anyone that can backup any better than him? That's says a lot.
