Luck: What if Ben had pulled this?

The question isn't what would we do if Ben retired 2 years ago, the question is:

How do the window licking Steeler fans that wanted to trade Ben for Luck, feel now?

Uhh...people were saying that?? I honestly dont remember ever reading anyone saying they wanted Ben traded for Andrew, at least not here

For them to foot the bill this year makes me think there's no other scenario than this. And possibly not burning any bridges hoping for a Luck return down the road.

Troy Aikman said Wannstedt called him in '03 or '04 and he gave some serious thought. You have to think Luck will travel the world and do his informal exchange program and at some point get the itch again. 29 is really young.

I could see Ben retiring in 2 years. right before MR becomes a free agent

Yup, I thought Coach floated it when Luck was set to be a free agent, and Ben had bad press. He wanted the Steelers to trade for Luck, stating he was younger and would last longer...

This thread is a Big F'ing deal, man.

Coach has made some great calls eh? Troy was a bad pick, our hof qb not as hardy as Luck, and I'm sure he thought the Bus was done long before he actually was.

After all the drama at end of year with Brown after listening to Bell all year. Ben being blamed for everting this team coaches and ownership was doing Then throw in the fact Tomlin allowed Brown to much rope came to surface, who did not at least think maybe Ben had had enough.

At the time most thought we got "JACKED" on the AB trade. Point being BEN's input was something to the line of "it's either him,....or me", thus the Aclown is gone.!

When Ben was going through the mud on the Tahoe, then Georgia thing, LOTS of people were clamoring for him to be traded.

There was a "Ben for Stafford" cry from a few as well.

And as was pointed out earlier, Bradshaw had every right to his animosity for Pittsburgh that lasted better than a decade. The fans are very very demanding. Tommy Maddox went from belle of the ball to having trash dumped on his lawn not once, but twice. And that was AFTER he'd had his neck gimped up from a brutal hit. He was never quite the same after that.

We should have a comment/post of the year thread and this should go right in it.

It had to be during the 2015 season. Luck would have been a FA, but the team backed up the truck.

I've never been to the burgh and all I just love the Steelers and I have since before they won anything. That said, Pittsburghers sure seem like a fickle, demanding and entitled lot. Just sayin' .

I've been away for a long time, but I really do like Western Pennsylvanians. They're typically genuine, loyal, heart of gold, hard-working people. But they have high expectations for their sports teams. Example:

Company I work for has a customer in Pittsburgh. One of our main customers actually. They're based right by the airport. Anyways, I talk to them on an almost daily basis -- and I'm always bringing up the Steelers and trying to inject some positivity into the conversation (which you have to do with a customer) -- and every single one of them is down on the Steelers. I'll say "Hey, Steelers won three in a row in the preseason and their defense and depth looks pretty damn good!" to which they'll respond, meh, I'll wait to see what happens in the regular season. Fair enough.

But last year, and the year before that, and the year before that -- they're always eh, I'll get excited when I see them making a real run for a SB. I'd venture to guess they're a little fed up with Cool Shades.

Well, now we're talking the same language! But...to cheer TB's separated shoulder, heresy.

Had Ben pulled this in say 2010 with no Super Bowls or even Super Bowl appearances(like Luck), he'd probably get booed, but if he'd pull it now after the career he's had and being a first ballot HOF'er, not sure how you could boo him.

Let's say this is several years ago coming into the 2017 season...

Two years ago Ben was 35 years old - six years older than Luck - with two SB rings.

Apples & oranges comparison, imo.

It is, however the "fanatic" in fan bases is universal. I'd imagine if Ben's retirement news leaked during a preseason game under any circumstances barring TBI or major health issues, there'd be more than a few boo birds out and very bad optics too -- maybe worse given a HOF career prior.

Ben himself has also been somewhat of a polarizing persona from Michelangelo murals to Milledgeville.

For sure there would have been utter shock and dismay, but I doubt Steelers fans would have bood him. This isn't Philly.
