#Steelers DL Lavon Hooks suffered an Achilles injury in practice and is out for the season, source said. Tough deal for a guy who’s worked so hard to get his shot.

I think he was being edged out of the 53 by Buggs and Big Dan but a tough out for a guy who has hung around for awhile.

Best wishes on a speedy recovery Lavon.

Dang, sorry for him having to go out like that. He will get good medical and heal up then make a new attempt at the NFL. I wonder if they'll keep him around or outright "injury" settlement / cut ?

Salute the nation

Sorry to hear that about this young man. None of us ever want to see guys get hurt and especially lost for the season after working so hard to get here. Get well young man!

Looks like the Steelers waived/injured Hooks and signed a Linebacker? Don't they already have plenty of them?

We must have more cats from Toledo than the rest of the NFL combined. Something must be in the drinking water, seems like there's some real talent hidden away down there. The Steelers are locked-in on the Toledo boys! :)

The Steelers have signed free agent linebacker Jayrone Elliott and waived/injured defensive end Lavon Hooks.

Elliott signed with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent out of Toledo in 2014. He recorded four sacks and appeared in 38 regular-season games over his three-year tenure with the club (2014-16). Elliott also had stints with both the Dallas Cowboys (2017) and New Orleans Saints (2018).

Man, sorry to here about my SEC alum...prayers and good wishes for his future.

I think the signing of the kid from Toledo - Elliot is an OLB probably...checking on him now...

Now this is based on the YouTube highlights alone...

Elliott looks better than Anthony Chickaslow already. Going to look for his college games...

Nice highlights. A couple of those sacks he was essentially unblocked, but I like his demeanor, instincts, lateral/closing speed & looks like he can set the edge. Are LBs finally a potential strength on the Pittsburgh Steelers again?!

I've got nothing against Chickillo the man, seems like a decent enough dude. But he's by far the most frustrating guy to watch on our squad. Just seems to be treading water, running in sand, never getting from point A to point B. He runs up to the blocker in front of him, slows down and seems content to play patty cakes. He seems oblivious to where the ball is and is seemingly unaware that his task is to actually make an attempt to get past the blocker. He may have made some plays over the years, but I must have been taking a piss break or grabbing a beer in the kitchen, as I can't remember a single tackle or sack. He's just taking up oxygen on this defense, maybe one of the Toledo boys will take his spot and actually make a difference on the field.

I wholeheartedly agree w/ you. Anthony is a nice young fella - just needs to find out what he does best off our roster...

His fanboy has been VERY QUITE lately.

Chickillo is steady. That's what he does best. He's a good special teamer. Backups have to be multi-taskers Chick can play ST and backup both OLB spots.

To beat him out, somebody will not only have to show they can rush the passer better, but also play the run, drop in coverage, and play special teams.

True.

Ola, Skipper and now Elliott make Chick a liability...

I can't wait to see Sutton this week - if he's an inkling better than Chick...the writing will be on the wall...

We save money dumping Chick.

Hooks took a step back this year. Last year he flashed, but this year there is no place for him. Buggs, Alualu, and Big Dan have a chokehold on the backup DL spots.

Sad to hear about Hooks' injury though. Achillies injuries are no joke, and he'll be rehabbing all season.

Not just Toledo, although there is many of them, it's the MAC in general the Steelers seem to have an eye on overlooked gems, Gilbert went to Akron, the Steelers like MAC players even though the competition isn't as high they seem to find guys in that conference

Made no sense. A TE or OT world have made more sense as depth here is an issue.

Hooks want making this team anyway. Buggs had impressed.

do tell, Cooch, who would you have brought in?

I I thought Chick was a 1st ballot hall of famer? Or at least all pro.

Look for a waiver wire add on TE. But to point we are stacked at Lb. Our depth is terrible a TE so giving an unsigned TE a look makes more sense. Do you agree or disagree with that point?

Final cuts might produce a TE but for now the pickings are slim.

That is my thought...just nobody out there that interests them. I put the FA list I found above. I assume the team has a file on any undrafted guys who are available. Grades on those guys are probably pretty low. If every team has, on average, 4 TE's on their roster right now then 31 (not counting our own cut) will be on the market in a couple weeks. I assume that since they are on rosters, they have a better grade than those who are not currently on rosters.

My guess is they will make a few calls to see about possible trades ahead of final cuts.
