Steelers bring in former OC Sherman to work with receivers

Like Chip mentioned, the resume has a lot of one and done's on it, 67 and out of the league for 3-4 years.

Certainly wish him and the team well and hope he has LeBeau like stamina.

Hoping for a smooth transition for Coach Sherman and the WRs. This is a tough situation for all involved. Coach realizes what he is coming into and cannot be easy. Glad Coach accepted to the position to help out.

probably not much quality laying around this tme of year.
i read a lot of things about drake, with almost all of it talking about what a great person he was.
maybe sherman is being hired because he is a nice guy, not because he is a good coach.
that isnt a knock on either coach.
anybody that has been part of any work force knows that you need all types of 'supervisors' to run an efficient business

He was never used properly.

i can't read the article, is it saying he's the WR coach from here on out, or was he just working with the WR's yesterday? He was already in camp as an offensive consultant or something like that.

From the article:

While the Steelers have made no formal announcement regarding the hiring of Sherman to replace Drake, it would seem something of a natural fit.

Cotchery is a WR coaching intern some where as well, but Hines would be a great hire. He was glued to JuJu when JuJu was a rookie.

Is Tomlin / FO settling for Sherman as it's the easy thing to do?????? Why not make a play, a hard play for Ward to one in as a paid coach to enhance the WR coaching. In this sensitive time, promoting from with-in may make everyone happy but DRAKE himself being a coach, would more than likely want done what ever gives the team the best chance. I'd think Ward & Sherman would be a way better asset than Just Ray himself.

Evidently not enough to buy you & your wife's drinks down town....... OH wait, that was OC "fighting" Todd's pay.

I'm not sure what the pay sale is around the league.

Just my two cents...

Coach Drake's funeral service hasn't even taken place yet (correct)??? How about we let THAT take place first and then let the FO and Coach Tomlin begin the search for a true replacement?

Compassion and sympathy, first.

Coach Drake's death, while unfortunate, really came at the 'best time' something like this could happen - just after the first preseason game. I'm certain there's enough time to put out feelers and select a viable candidate before the season starts.

Ok, sorry, rant done.

Players Play & Coaches Coach....

The WR's will be fine

Remember that Ward was really critical of Tomlin after last season and he also (allegedly) was really hoping in 2017 to get the job that Drake ultimately got.

“I just think the culture that was set by Mike Tomlin...the shenanigans, the circus is not conducive to winning football and that’s not the standard of the Pittsburgh Steelers," Ward said. “You look at AB, what he did with the Facebook Live and there was really no hard punishment for that and you have to set the tone early because players are only going to get away with what you get away with but once you start creeping into them and letting it get by, sweeping it under the rug and things don’t go well. The Steelers have too much talent not to make the playoffs and that’s a reflection of the head coach."

Ward on Tomlin after last year's circus. I'm sure Shades wasn't real happy with those comments, even though they were warranted IMO.

Oh God. I HATED Ray Sherman as an OC.

Please don't let him get his stank on the new group of receivers. I pray he is limited to saying, "Hey, this is the route, rookie!"

Ray ******* Sherman?

Really?

Being an NFL assistant coach is a crap-ton of work and I suppose you're not going to find anyone available at this late date. If people are retired, they're retired for a reason and unlikely to want to go back to 80 hour workweeks. I would have tried to pry Hines Ward away from the Jets though.

this. I suspect there weren't a lot of people available this time of year, not to mention available and willing. This isn't just stepping into new team already in training camp...this is stepping into a very difficult personnel situation. I suspect that Sherman's experience with people was as important as his experience as a positional coach. I know he wasn't successful as an OC, but to have been considered for an OC position, he had to have been deemed successful as a positional coach. One does not last that long in the league without being talented. Perhaps Lawrence J. Peter was on to something.

At anyrate, it is easy to sit back and criticize the man, but basically on a single phone call he dropped his current life and jumped back into what he knows darn well will be 80+ hour work weeks as Ron Burgundy said. He did this no doubt because he is a decent man who sees a place where his personal sacrifice can have a big impact to these young men. I suggest some of y'all consider what the man just agreed to do even if it turns out to be only a few weeks or months before criticizing the man.

Back to Ron - Ward would have been perfect. He is a happy guy, well respected, a legend in the town and still young enough to relate to the players. I don't see him listed on the Jets staff though.

I thought about Swann, Lipps, Thigpen, Randle El, even Stonio. Don't know if any of them have done any coaching on an level or if any are even available.

Looked up Stallworth too - found this on Wiki: 'Stallworth was announced as becoming part-owner of his former team on March 23, 2009, as part of the Rooney family restructuring ownership of the team.' He's already part of the organization? Is this true??

I have faith the organization will get this done.

From so not great unit performances overlooked by ex-players recently, I prefer a lot of coaching experience....

I think you hit the nail on the head here, especially with his own experience of dealing with tragedy of losing one of his kids. And coming out of retirement knowing that you're going to be working the hours you guys already mentioned, that takes a lot of commitment and sacrifice. I know he wasn't a good OC, but I wish him the best this season and hopefully he can help direct these young guys to success.

I read earlier that he is a coaching intern with the Jets.

I wonder how that works as far as the contract goes? Meaning could he get out of it because it's basically an internship, or is he bound for a certain length of time? I assume it's one year.

Like I mentioned earlier in the thread, I don't know if Hines is on the outs because of how critical he was of Tomlin. If the guy is qualified, knows the system, knows the receivers -- I would hope he would get a chance to be able to work with them.

A few years ago when he was still playing, a local reporter mentioned that he was walking through the Steelers' facility and in one room Hines Ward was leading a meeting and diagramming plays on a dry erase board and the other WR's were paying rapt attention. There were no other coaches there, just Hines.

ok pc police has spoken. Cant talk about it until hes buried. Got it.x

I would think as in other COACHING aspects of the NFL that if a "move up" position was offered, the individual would have that right to accept or deny.

My understanding of NFL rules is that if it's a lateral move or lesser position your current team can deny you the right to interview with another team. If it's a promotion they cannot.
