Ron Cook: It's time for the Steelers to extend Mike Tomlin's deal

Fact is it doesn't matter if they extend him or not. It doesn't count against the cap and they can still let him go at any time. It just costs them money. I don't think he's going anywhere. Even if he misses the playoffs this year the same old true tired line will be said "This is the year he has to make it work!!" People said the same thing at the start of last season. Last year was suppose to be his "It's now or never year". We see how that worked out.
 
Don't extend his deal.
 
Tomlin has been fat and happy for way too long. He needs to earn it.

3 playoff wins in 8 years hasn't earned it.

45 points to Blake Bortles at home hasn't earned it.

In the flow with Dobbs didn't earn it.

Relying on opposing stadium replays to make decisions on challenges didn't earn him any benefit of the doubt.

His seat should be lava-hot.

He has won a playoff game in 4 of 12 seasons with a franchise QB. That's just not good enough.

Just because the extension distraction is removed doesn't mean Tomlin can't be fired.

with his tenure and their belief in him, I'm thinking he makes north of 7 million a season. I don't think they would intend to eat that. It is 7 million right out of their pocket. If they extend he is coaching.

All things being equal, sure. However, having invested a lot of capital to trade up for a player, if they turn in a sub .500 season, without a great deal of injuries, opinions in the FO may change.

Cook is looking for clicks.

He can be fired even with an extension, but it's so unlikely ... I mean, not just because the steelers never fired his HC in the last 50 years, but even his assistant is not fired when he remains some year to his contract.No reason that Keith Butler is still our DC, but we have no choice but to live with that and hope for the best.

But if we still see the same **** with Butler than last year and the other years before, I'll lose my composure since it's so frustrating to see a team being loyal to a coach like Butler or even Todd Haley ... No reason to see a LB on a WR again

Same here, and I still like & have faith in Tomlin.

There's no real rational reason why at this point, it may just be the Irish Catholic in me.

Can't disagree with any of this whatsoever. Maybe Ben giving them a few points (Jax), but the rest, nope.
 
I'd let him roll through this season. It's been a long long time since they sniffed greatness. I want him to succeed. That means the team has succeeded. That's all I care about.

They won't fire him anyway so it doesn't matter. Even if they don't extend he won't get the boot. They'll extend him next year if they don't this year.
 
As mentioned, the team hasn't fired a head coach in literally 50 years and Shades knows this. Mediocrity is acceptable and new standard is the new standard, if you will, obviously.
If he has two years left then there is absolutely no reason to give him an extension this year. Next year maybe, depending on how he does this year. That said, the team will probably give him an extension sooner and not later. I think he would need at least three consecutive years of 8-8 or worse to get fired. Remember he had back-to-back 8-8 years when the defense was better and didn't get fired.

In a sane world Tomlin would be the 9th place coach, or worse, but looking at the list are many of the coaches now listed ahead of him any better? This isn't the 70's with seven future HOF head coaches roaming the sidelines every week. Today your top ten head coaches are Bill Belicheat and nine jabronis no matter how you slice it. Are Reid, McVay, and Hairball really better than Tomlin? I don't think so.

At least Reid and McVay run their offenses and are damned good at it.

Motivation/leadership is supposed to be Tomlin's key attribute, yet that seems to be lacking every season to various extents.

Also, I'm still waiting for his secondary coaching background to pay off at some point.

We know what the Steelers have in Tomlin, reflected in the fact the same **** happens every year and nothing changes.

It might be comforting for fans to think that Antonio Brown was the primary source of the problems, but it's much more likely he was merely a symptom of how Tomlin runs the team.

Don't hold your breath. When he was the Vikings' DC his defense had the unique distinction of being #1 against the run and dead last against the pass.

I agree with others that the only reason Butler still has a job is because Shades is really running the defense. If they fire him and everything remains the same with the same results then the rest of the public not on SN.com will realize that Shades can't draft or run a defense. Take your Tampa 2 and GTFO.

For me, it's the worst season, on and off the field and it ended the era of the steelers Bs who was very talented, but so much drama and underachieve ... More disappointing era in steelers history (2014-2018 ) ... Maybe not on the win-loss record, but on the fact that the steelers should accomplish much more.
 
Its simple really! Does anyone on this board really think if Tomlin had been coaching in Tampa Bay, Tennessee, Cleveland, Washington for example, and there are more, that he would have lasted as long as he has here? The guy was the perfect fit for the Rooney's at the time of his hiring. Fit the Rooney rule as a minority hiring, a stacked team with a young franchise QB, excellent assistance coaches, a pretty damn good GM, are you ******* kidding me?

Had he been hired by some of the dregs of the league as mentioned above, he'd have been long ago dismissed and most likely been an assistant or coordinator somewhere in the NFL but he's not a good head coach. The guy just hasn't really improved in any area that I'm aware of. He actually appears to be getting worse over the course of time and that is troubling. So no way do I extend him for mediocrity, no, I make him prove it in 2019 and that means a deep run in the playoffs and if he fails, then you end this charade next year and move on.

If the Steelers fall flat on their face again this coming season, Art jr. needs to make sure he has this guy in his office

The Steelers have had good talent that is why Tomlin is looked at in high regards. Tomlin has done nothing in the playoffs.The last few years his coaching ability has shined through, dealing with Brown really shined through on Tomlin's ability to have no control of the team. Not making the playoffs last year and watching the actions on sidelines should be troublesome to ownership on extended Tomlin's contract.
 
Ultimately we all want the Steelers to do well this year, which in turn makes Tomlin look better.

Unfortunately, we all know there are games on the schedule this year, that on paper they should win, but they won't.

Can't win them all, but pisses me off when they don't show up in these games.
