One subject from last season that may have perplexed a lot of Pittsburgh Steelers fans is how quarterback Ben Roethlisberger could have put up career numbers, even strong numbers compared on a league-wide basis, and seemingly universally be regarded as having a mediocre season. He was just the second quarterback to throw for over 5000 yards and not earn a Pro Bowl nomination, as just one example.

One other of countless examples would be Pro Football Focus, whose grade for Roethlisberger last season many scoffed at. His 78.2 grade from last season was the first sub-80 score the site had assigned him since 2011. He has only had four sub-80 grades in the PFF era beginning in 2006, those being in 2018, 2011, 2008, and 2006.

It was because of that that I was interested in hearing one of the site’s head figures, Steve Palazzolo, speak more directly about the discrepancy between his statistical output and his number grade, which he did recently in an AFC North roundtable discussion:

So basically he needs to cut down on INTs. What I got from the article.............

Sounds to me like Ben need the playing time in preseason games.

Yes I have been saying that for years. Tomlin likes to bubble wrap him in preseason. but with the cheats game 1 and missing the playoffs maybe he alters that approach.

and with AB gone , do we not all think this number will come down?

Maybe in yards,TD but also in interception and pass attempts...Even if AB was still with us, I do not think the steelers would have had the same number of pass attempts ... Also, last year was the first time since Antonio Brown became a super star that Roethlisberger and AB were not always on the same page, so that was one of the big problems of the steelers last year.

Those Interceptions / missed balls / forced passes are the numbers I was referring to ,, to come down.

From the article:

"He did get off to a fairly slow start, by and large, starting with three interceptions in the opener. His accuracy, particularly when targeting Antonio Brown, was very spotty through much of the early portions of the season, as you might recall."

So I'm not really sure what you are saying. Offense and passing and TD's were not a big problem of the steelers last year.

How do you know that in previous years BEN & little titties weren't, at times on the same page.....??? LAST year was the blow up but don't think for a moment little titties hasn't been screaming when he didn't get his way / touches.

A lot of people like to compare to t*mmyb*y and Billicheat, would this have been a big issue with that tandom????? Ben / Tomlin kept things under wrap for a long time so tell me, how was it ONLY last year that little titties wasn't free lancing...................

I think a BIG weight has been lifted from the team in that the meMEme twins are now gone and with that weight, BEN will flow way easier.

Salute the nation

If we look for the target% and yards per target, it was the lowest for AB since 2012 .... It was especially not very good early in the season when Ben and Brown did not seem to be on the same page. ..It was better from the second half against the Falcons to the end of the season , but it was up and down .

But I agree that Brown's loss could help Ben .... I'm not too worried too, since Ben was a HOF caliber QB even before Brown became a star in 2013.

I've said it countless times, Ben should play in the pre-season and he should practice during the week in the regular season. Sure, he should get days off as a veteran but it shouldn't be nearly as many as he has been getting. Last year and the year before when he was sucking, he practiced more and it was very evident. He's been at all off-season activities this year and he had his time with the WR's in Georgia. If he practices during camp and gets in at least 4 full quarters during the preseason, I would look for him to start off much better this year than the past 2 years.

It's going to be important that Ben plays in the preseason, especially the 2nd and 3rd game.

Since the injury to Pouncey in 2015 against the Packers in preseason (Jordy Nelson had had a serious injury in this game too) the starters on offense have almost not played in the preseason since because Tomlin is so afraid of the injuries in the preseason ... But the Steelers are not the only ones in the NFL to not play his starters in the preseason since that time, but it needs to change for them.
