I just read an article that the Steelers are up against the cap again next year. This year I can see. No problem. The team is essentially out three superstar players they should be rightfully having to pay. Bell, Brown and Shazier. Can someone tell me how the **** they could possibly still be in cap jail next year. Who runs this ship?

No article knows what moves will take place like contract extensions, true salary cap which isn't known just a projection.

They had one of their busiest free agent offseasons, and still kept everyone they wished to keep.

Why wouldn't that be able to take place next year?

They lost essentially 3 guys who were either were or should have been 1st round picks. Why should they have to make moves.

Who did the Steeler lose noteworthy?

Well they should be having to pay Bell Brown and Shazier about a combined 45 million dollars a season. Like I said they ate Browns 20 this year but I thought they would be real clear next year.

They had more than enough to pay Bell, who actually received less to play elsewhere. They payed AB who was shipped off for behavioral reasons. Shazier is out of the equation. A his hit is minimal if at all. A few restructures and they will be where they want to be. Sask nothing has changed it is their same approach every year. You can't look at a list and say oh no, because they adjust their cap. By hook or by crook.

If they had more than enough to pay Bell and Brown was a huge contract and they aren't paying Shazier why are they going to have to restructure contracts. Like I was thinking they would be players in FA next season.

Because taking care of your own usually results in being close up against the cap. if it wasn't the case the complaint from fans would be the Rooney's are cheap.

But no they resign their own to healthy contracts. Their approach is every bit of consistent. And they stair stack their contracts. Little more each year.

And what if they had a ton of money to spend? Would they take on the Redskin approach at throwing out money and overpaying?

How has that served them well?

Steelers aren't coming up short because of money reasons. As they spend.

I'm not going to argue this as I think we both know each others point. I guess I just thought because they wont be taking care of three pretty damn big of their own they would be on the good side of things. And as I remember when the whole thing went down with Brown it was the way a lot of people felt. Suck it up this year and then it gets better.

Not an argument just a friendly debate.

And they were in good shape, but kept spending. And brought Nelson and Barron to upgrade. DM to help stabilize the corps.

I know you would like a little more cushion I get that. I think what is more important is competition, and they managed to bring that in and still upgrade weaknesses. And if they see someone they like off final cuts they will just extend a contract, which is probably in the works regardless.

Ben's extension has a $33.5m cap hit in 2020. Add in Nelson, Barron and Moncrieff at a combined $25m odd and you have $58.5m new spending in 2020.

It's just hard to have much cap flexibility unless your franchise QB is willing to play at a considerable discount, which Ben clearly wasn't.

I'm not blaming him for taking what he can get, but that's just the reality.

And I guess that is the jist of it there. And I also wouldn't expect him to play for cheap. but Cheaper might have been good. He has made more than him, his kids and his grandkids can spend. Shouldn't it be about legacy now?

I did not like him squeezing every dime he could out of the Steelers for no other reason than it implies he told them he was willing to go to highest bidder in free agency.

That's how leverage works in negotiations, and it's the nature of professional sports.

I'm not saying Ben doesn't care about winning and the Steelers, I believe he clearly does, but the money is still top priority for 90% of these guys.

When Bell was bitching about being paid tons of people on here were ok giving him RB and WR money. Hell some were even suggesting he should be the highest paid RB in the league by more than double. Now Ben is chastised for being what the 7th highest paid QB?

Maybe he needs to follow t*mmy b*y's approach but instead of TB12 Ben could come up with something like.......BR7 and supplement his salary to help lower his cap.......................... Just an idea,, Yaz know.

AND top that off with how many here would take a pay-cut at their jobs, you know,,,.... Home town discount...... for the team so they could bring in more talented workers............

Steelers brought in three decent free agents, I don't think Ben's contract negatively impacted or road blocked them for going after who they wanted.

Ben contract isn't a problem. The defense, a diva WR and a certain kicker were the problems last year.

Now they just have to solve the kicker. You don't want that costing two to three games...............

I agree 100%. If you want to go play in Cincinnati or Miami go ahead. Take a lower salary and win. More immortal. If you take 12 million a year. Not enough? Really?

Are there really six QBs set to make more than Ben next year?

Regardless, that's a ton of money locked up in one player on a team with a closing champion window.

Ben could have taken less to enable the team to put more around him in these last few years. That's all I'm saying.

Steelers know how to free up money when needed. They just don't want to have to overpay in the process. Big Ben is worthy of a number one QB type contract. I am happy he didn't want more.

Thing is this Slash the way they free up money is to convert salary into bonus money which I would argue is the real reason Brown is now a Raider.

Brown got paid very very well. And overspent so he wanted more. I wouldn't have changed my approach to accommodate the tool either. Plus he wasn't following rules. Not sure we would have ever won it all with him. He just wasn't a very good team player. Not that I don't get where you are coming from. But if that is the cost of doing business with the few, there is the door.
