I had a great little chat with Tyler Matakevich and wanted to share it with you all. With Gilbert and Bush coming in (as well as Barron) Matakevich's role on this team becomes a little murky. But he's still all smiles and positivity. It will be interesting to see where/how/if he ends up fitting in for 2019.

I think dirty red still sticks this year. But make no mistake he will have competition. Mike Tomlin obviously he realizes that, and looks like he is ready to take on all comers. Solid write-up, thank you....

Thanks Hunter for sharing and insight with these articles. "Dirty Red" has his hands full and I think his ONLY chance to stick, outside of injury, will be a solid special teams ace like player. His ST roll onn a 27th ranked ST squad needs big improvements so he will have to step up there. His LB skills will be in na back up mode for depth if he makes the cut. I've always like the underdog role and Tyler fits in that mold.

Salute the nation

There should be a lot of competition at the ILB spot. After last year, the Steelers made it clear they wanted to get more athletic at the position at added three guy rookies who can move. We'll see if it translates to the NFL field.

Maybe Matakevich's calling is coaching? I see a tough uphill climb too Berm with all these athletes now there.

He's as solid as they come on ST. He will have to be even better this year with DHB gone.

Agree. Steelers love effort guys, sometimes too long. But you want some of those effort dudes around. I'd be fine if he made the 53.

Not everyone can be a starter. You also need role-players and guys who are willing to give everything they've got for the few plays they get on the field in order to let the other guys know they aren't leaving anything on the field.

Everyone loves a 'Rudy'.

The sure to make it list at LB is: Watt, Dupree, Vince , Bush, Barron (If they call him a LB), Then it gets into the Matakevich tier of him, Chickillo, the 6th round draft draft picks Gilbert and Sutton Smith. But I would imagine they keep 8 in total. 4 inside and 4 outside. Chickillo signed a 2 year 8 million dollar deal with 2 million dead space. He stays. So that puts Ola vs. Sutton Smith for the last outside spot and Dirty Red vs. Gilbert for the last ILB spot. On the bubble? Yes. Uphill battle? No. He likely wins it and Gilbert becomes a PS player if not picked up on waivers.
