Which one of these positions hasn't made the Pro Bowl since 1996?

And for bonus points why in your opinion has the draught been this long?

While the pro bowl used to mean something, today with the 5th or 6th place vote getting to go only underscores how weak this one position has been for the Steelers.

CB

poor drafting at the position

You win the NO PRIZE! Correct, and the Steelers didn't exactly want to keep Rod Woodson around. A colossal mistake. Rod could still play and was a top player for years after his exit. Yes-- poor drafting is a reason, and not enough focus on it in round one is another. Corner ( or maybe Tackle ) is probably the position picked most often in round one, yet we hardly do it.

1996. 20+ years has passed since the Steelers had a Pro bowl CB. And since I'm on a roll today another reason as to why is the Steelers never picked the corner I liked over the years. No less than three of whom made the bowl bowl over the past five years. Oh freaken well...

I'd love to sit in a room and hear the Steelers debate corners. I also have high hopes for Layne being at least a solid pro.

Ike should have made a pro bowl. For sure. Haden is close. They have had a lot of medocrity or worse and system guys who are useful, but don't stand out.

The Steelers didn't keep Rod because there hadn't been much evidence in a great player coming back full strength after an ACL tear, and it was a contract year. They didn't want to throw tons of money at a question mark. They rolled the dice and ended up being the wrong decision in hindsight, but the decision was very sound when you weighed the factors at that time of the decision.

I thought his unwillingness to move to S played a hand in the decision as well. From what I remember...

Woodson went to 49'ers and played LCB his one year there and I think it was his second year at Baltiwhore that he made the switch. The thought process of letting him go seemed correct at the time but in hind sight, as Cope said, turned out to be wrong.

Bonus question: Which team had the most Pro Bowl Selections in the NFL last year and still missed the playoffs in a division with Tyrod Taylor, Baker Mayfield as a rookie, Jeff Driskell, and Lamar Jackson running a Service Academy offense?

Answer: The same team that had drafted defense in the first round for the previous 6 years.

Donahoe added insult to injury a year or two later with the "we're not the Salvation Army" comment regarding a possible Woodson return after he washed out in SF at CB.

The Ravens wound up with a great safety though. And the Steelers ironically saw Carnell Lake play both positions in that era as well.

The fact that Rod complained on live TV during the ProBowl that he wasn’t happy with his contract talks moved Mr. Rooney and Donahoe to not go forward either. Mr. Rooney really did not like public discussion of contracts talks.

Slash is right as well. Rod refused a move to Safety as it would have reduced his leverage contract wise. His ego got the best of him at that time. Coming back from the ACL and playing in a SB previously, he must of felt like he was Superman.

It was the way they went about it that pissed Rod off. They told him his days at CB were over, hence his new contract should reflect it. He said Donnahoe presented it in a demeaning way.

Donohoe later spiked the football with the "Salvation Army" comment. He also tweaked Cowher about the team being flat going into the Divisional Round game in NE in '96.

Didn't seem to have the greatest "soft skills" in the business.

Came down to a power struggle between Cowher and donohoe and as you well know,..........BILL won that one.

The Steelers did try to keep Rod. They wanted to move him to safety. Rod was offered a more lucrative contract by the Steelers but he signed elsewhere for less because they promised he would play CB. I believe it was SF if my memory is correct.

Pro bowlers lead to this uestion. In Bill Cowher's era how many pro bowlers did he have. VS Tomlin in his era??? Also how many did the CHEATRIOTS have in that time span????

And after a short run he ended up at S anyways. I think he knows he ****** up the situation...

Dick L preferred larger, more physical corner's who could hold the edge and play the run over speedy ball hawks. That type of CB didn't get the votes for PB. The LBs were the heart and soul playmakers of those defenses and they got the press and the accolades, not the CB's. But the game has changed and so has the defensive philosophy. LIke it or not, this defense is philosophically very different than the ones DL and BC ran, but because they are both "base 3-4", some folks just don't get that. Anyway, different era under DL where CB's played the game in a way that didn't lend itself to accolades.

Now, we can blame bad drafting all we want (and goodness knows, there has been plenty of that), but the draft is just the start. Those guys have to develop and learn and that is up to the coaches to teach them. My layman's observation is that "Mr. Coach 'Em Up" hasn't been very good at developing young Corners.

Wrong. Rod wanted more money. FO was considering it only if Rod would have agreed to an eventual transition to safety as Willie Williams bolted and there were some young corners on the team (Chad Scott was drafted and Figures - who subsequently got shot). Carnell was going to be the DB let go, but Rod left. Lake took his place and ironically the following year became an all-pro. Rod leaving screwed up the DB plans (Woolford was signed) and it was feet wet on the fly determining who was playing. Once they signed D. Washington, drafted Deshea Townsend and Scott got some experience did they have a solid DB squad.

Donahoe’s comments regarding “the Steelers weren’t the Salvation Army” was in reference to whether there were Steeler FO interest during his FA tour after Rod’s year in San Fran. He then signed with Balt.

It was a money issue too. The Steelers were known as cheap before Heinz Field was built. Whatever Rod was asking for he was worth it, and there is no doubt he would have a starter at cornerback for year one of the new contract.

The Steelers screwed this one up. Woodson is among the best 4 defensive backs in the history of the NFL. You just don't let a guy like that go, you make accommodations for him.

It is also obvious money is the reason O'Donnell left. Rooney didn't want to pay him. Neil was a solid passing QB who didn't turn the ball over, capable of winning playoff games. Hastings ran the wrong way. Then Donahue drafted Kordell and down our super bowl chances went.

I disagree the analysis on him needing to move to safety was spot on. And once he did make the move he flourished.

Woodson's ACL injury caused him a 1/2 step issue. In today's ACL game it is a lot different than back then. Woodson needed to move to safety, speed wise. He played 1 year at CB for San Fran but then the Baltiwhore signed him and SAFETY was born. I'm not looking up his stats from 49'ers stint but it was below his normal level of play, that's my bet or they would have kept him. Nothing against Rod but his ending was mostly self made here.
