Team speed or Lack thereof

And Coach, does Google.com not work on your 'puter??? You always want us to do the research to prove your asinine comments are wrong. I suggest you get another search engine...

You don't "get" search engines, you use them. It's not like I can have neighbors come over to see the my new search engine I "got."

Ask Al Davis how well his 'speed choices' worked out for the Raiders' organization. Too much speed and no strategy is STUPID.
Really, tell that to the Al Davis of the 70's and 80's, not the senile version who OVER-valued and prioritized PURE speed over all other factors. I seem to recall the pre-senile Al Davis winning Super Bowls with his philosophy.
Check out Super Bowls XI, XV and XVIII if you think Al was such a dummy to value speed. He beat MN, Philly and Skins with using speedy players.

Then, as in a lot of people, as he aged he put an inappropriate emphasis on his philosophies, true that.

By the way, did the speed of players like Rod Woodson, Troy Polamalu, Mel Blount, Lynn Swann, Willie Parker, Ike Taylor, Greg Lloyd, Shazier, Lew Lipps, etc. help improve the team?

This post is a shining bright light example of why you catch the flack that you do. Seriously dude?

I believe the 40 needs to change. You have to start from a standing start, and you should run it in the grass/turf, in cleats with shells. That will be the best actual game speed you will be able to measure.

TOTALLY agree Cope. I mean really, are we running track or playing football. Pad up and take the run, compare it to real deal. That's like cooking burgers at a BACON cooking contest, **** the burgers, cook the BACON !!!!!!!! Yaz dig.!!!

Speed doesn't matter.. What matters is a good video recorder and people willing to sneak into an opponents stadium during walk throughs.... that's how you be great!

You forgot about "letting air out of football's too", amongst many other envelopes edge.

The way I see it the trolls can be thankful the mods are lenient. Give them praise.

I think our moderators are AWESOME as they have quite the balancing act to perform. Can't ban everybody and it's a fine line to keep the balance of knowledge and exotic to keep this place the besteverestest in the world. Some trolls are just for entertainment and conflict. Other team's fans show up time to time who happen to be super duper such as Edreed4pres / GBpack / and others. The one true troll that never seems to fit it the ones that pretend to be someone else, the ones that have a secondary account or have been banned and return. REMEBEMER there was a reason for their original ban.

Yes sirreeee, our Moderators are by far some of the best and seem to hold a well balance of forgiveness and authority by letting the entertainment continue till there is no choice, then the "BAN HAMMER". It's not like they ban out of the blue. I hear they PM you and warn yaz and give you every chance to straighten up, but for some that just doesn't happen, thus the BH.

Thank you top the never ending work of our great moderators, ............. And Coolie too!!!!

I guess you failed to notice that Bermuda-dil(do) follows me around and ruins every thread he can of mine and Coach. Seriously dude?

If you're going to quote numbers sources first, then you'll be more accurate. Yes you are confused. Research it for yourself, then comment. The 2nd reply from you will be interesting.

As for our WR's, 3 of our top 4 guys are 4.5+ types. Only Moncreif has what I would call good speed for his position.

Not trying to to clown you or anyone else here...just calling it as it is.

In other words, you know I'm right and can't respond with factual 40 yard dash times. You made several errors Bermuda. I hope you're happy playing in the pink sand where people won't call you out on BS.

Bermuda 0

Bermie doesn't even think speed matters in football....it's kind of cute.

Not surprising. It will take a herculean effort for the defensive backfield to accomplish significant improvement. Thank God for the pass rush.

What ever the amount of effort I would say it will be worth it. I think with last season under their belt / experience / same position / will all contribute to their better play. ALSO the meMEme twins being gone will also have a good effect on the "D" as well. So combine this 2ndary better play (regardless if just a little bit better, but I think will be enough better) with the superb play of the front rush and yes, you have a significantly better "D". After all it's the overall play of the "D" that we are wanting and hopefully will acheive.

Careful Boobie, because now you've added another to our cozy little club.
There's Gashsteel / Steel Wipes / Drink iron ****** / and now Bermuda-dil(do) so that makes four.

That's twice as many as YOU.

Think about it

If you go grocery shopping or to book store, you cannot avoid the football magazines on the shelf. I took time out to look at Atholon's who usually offers solid macro analysis on all 32 teams.

While thumbing through it, I noticed they had a players ratings per position.

At quarterback, Ben was 5th overall. Okay's that's fair. But where do our DB's rate? IMO this has been our weakest unit for years, and one that significantly benefits from one of the best pass rushes in football. With an average pass rush, our DB's would closer to burnt toast.

At Cornerback neither Haden or Nelson rate...in the top 30. I think Haden should rate in the top 30, maybe Atholon's think he's on the decline.

At Safety, Sean Davis, a player I'd like to see replaced makes the cut as the 27th best safety. At least Davis is a very cap friendly player....for now.

Nelson, who was brought in via free agency ranked 2nd overall among corners for yardage surrendered last season did not rate.

This brings me to Edmunds ( Who did not rate in the top 30 either ) and Layne. These two young players must pan out, because Haden isn't going to be around at his cap number for long, and Davis will be either overpaid for free agency or need to be replaced.

There were a few upside safeties the Steelers could have picked later in the draft. They choose none.

Just a note....it’s Athlon’s. Not Atholon.....read the magazine header and every page which shows the name.

Also, you do realize, Athlon uses a consortium of writers, mostly independent or publisher employed beat writers who contribute articles on the side.

The “entire NFL” team and player grades/content are just as opinionated pieces as SI, Sporting News, Lindy’s, Pro Football Weekly and the other half dozen publishers out there.

Didn't he lead the team in missed tackles too? And drop more interceptions that he caught? The Steelers rookie of the year often means a player had a chance to play a lot as a rookie and the others didn't. We've had punter win Joe Greene rookie of the year award.

All I ask he stops missing tackles 17+ tackles a season and makes a few plays while surrendering less yardage. Is that too much to ask? His coverage is poor. Davis allows to much space; the receiver catches it, then he closes on the ball.

In all actuality, Atholon's thinks Davis is a lot better than some other magazine and 3rd party rating systems. For example pro football focus has him much further back.

Agenda must be pushed........

Hey, who had the most snaps on the defense last year? Hey what was the tackle/missed tackle ratio compared to the others?

“Dropped more interceptions than he caught”......

Probably 90% of the league DBs drops more passes than INT caught. Dumb ***.

If you read the ACTUAL beat writers who TALK/ INTERVIEW the players and coaches, the first 2/3 of games played Davis was tasked primarily to stop long plays...a lynchpin of the defense in 2017. With his move to FS, he helped reduce long gains by half. He was cut loose to be more aggressive and make more plays on the ball later in the season and had some success.

ATHLON (do you need it painted on your forehead?) and the “3rd party rating system” (why don’t you say what it is? Pro Football Focus) are opinion pieces to generate interest for the NFL fans. PFF “rating system” is notorious panned by the actual statistical proprietors INDEPENDENT from the NFL and NCAA. PFF is a partner with NBC Sports and can say write whatever they want to generate interest in any topic.

Bermie doesn't even think speed matters in football....it's kind of cute.

no, Bermuda states that 40 times don't matter, that is not the same as speed. Being fast on a track in shorts and track shoes doesn't mean you are fast on a football field with pads on.

as Cope says, they should alter the way the 40 is ran to make it translate better to real game action.

Speed is nice, but running crisp, sharp routes and being able to take a shot are more important.

Jerry Rice is probably the greatest WR to ever play the game and he did not have blazing speed. Darrius Heward Bay ran something like a 4.3 40, but that did not make him a great WR....

Elite speed is nice to have, but it does not equate to elite skills. Give me WRs that run great routes and are where the QB expects them to be over someone whose only positive is DHB's speed

Aw little Ikie is having trouble with the facts again. Dude, if I wanted to push an agenda, I'd list more than two sources on our DB's / Davis. Its funny watching blind homers argue against the consensuses of companies who do this for a living. Most of the time, you dont even know what you're talking about!

For example:

Probably 90% of the league DBs drops more passes than INT caught, you say? PROVE THAT. I'll be waiting and as usualy you'll run and hide, not able to backup your statements. You're wrong. Davis dropped gimme interceptions, catchable balls. Most DB's covert on catchable balls throws their way.

My wife is gonna cook me that dish this morning!!! Oh boy!!!

Were you able to pull the real 40 yard times, or would you rather settle for fantasy? I can help you if you ask.

Why does he need to? Coolie explained it perfectly. Go reread that soak it in. Reread it, print it out. Have it on your pillow to reread until you grasp how a fast 40 doesn't necessarily mean fast on the football field. That is why they have a plethora of other tests to measure burst, explosiveness, speed in and out of breaks, etc. And instincts really aren't factored in which contributes the draft being an inexact science. Not to forget if they were in a NFL type scheme or not. If they were maxed out in college, were they productive, etc. 40 times are so small in the grand scheme it is silly to hang your hat on them.

Dumb ***, as explained your “two sources” are opinion pieces not factual. Go head and list the rest. Your opinion about Davis is yours, mine opinion is mine. I can read writers who know and interview the players and coaches for actual information rather than writers who haven’t even been to a team practice.

You sure love calling out people to do research, when you won’t (or most likely can’t) do your own. Just keep using PFF and keep us amused with your elementary look on the game.

As for DBs who miss/drop INTs. You ask any DB....ANY, they themselves will say they “should’ve had more than they had”. PDs are usually listed in the stat sheet, but some were dropped INT attempts. Doesn’t take a chimps brain to rationalize that. Oh, wait, we are talking about you.....

Marquise Goodwin just won 1 million $ and is the fastest man in the nfl. Look at all the great seasons he’s had and his top self career numbers. You do realize when your arguing about a guy not being sub 4.4 guy because his 4.46 40 is his fastest your talking about centimeters.
