Personally, I have good feelings about Diontae Johnson. I know he won't turn into the old Antonio Brown we all loved; but his tape and measureables sure do make this a "buy" for me.

I like the little blurb we've all missed - 'who is on the roster to stop his rise to #2???'
 
I say sell. With DM on the roster, I think they won't feel the need to force feed a rookie into playing time.

Plus I think Donte Moncrief is going to shine.
 
I didn't like the pick when we made it but I have heard good things from practice in shorts (excellent route runner, good hands and quick). We will have to wait and see what he does with pads but I still think he is and will be our No. 4 WR this year behind JuJu, Moncrief and Washington. I think our WR group has tremendous potential to be very special this year and even moreso if McDonald can stay healthy.
 
I think there is more to Moncrief than some here are giving him credit for. Those are pretty big shoes for rookie Johnson to move to #2 receiver. The only way that is to happen would b e through injury. I don't want to take anything away from the young man and if he merits that move up than so be it but that move would be epic and just to steep a hill to climb. Good luck to all the receivers and hope truly they all shine along the way.

I think Washington is going to rise and surprise. That along with Moncrief, and his touches will be limited. Therefore, SELL.

Also, there will be no true #2.
 
I like Washington, but I think his strength is on the outside. Therefore, I don't necessarily see him as a regular #2. I think he sees his time in 3 WR sets. And I hope he KILLS it!
 
Weird, I thought they were going to run the ball more? So now Washington, JuJu, Moncrief, and Johnson are going to be catching a ton of balls all the while Conner, Samuels and Schnell are running a ton more? That's a lot of offense.
 
Sell. Conner might have more catches than he will. Moncrief is likely to open the season as the starter, barring injures. Johnson better be able to separate vs NFL DBs. He was much better in 2017 and just good in 2018. Anyone know why?

There were some good players on the board that we passed on:

Due to the complete turn around in take away department, we will afford way more offense this year............ !!!

Different college QBs was the difference for DJ. I think his roadblock won't be seperation with quick feet. It will be just the normal rookie problems of learning the O, getting used to NFL routes and conditioning. I think he will start to come on late in the year or skip ahead to season 2.

Diontae Johnson is KNOWN for his ELITE ABILITY to separate on the LOS. Again, he has ELITE SKILLS here. But don't just take it from me - read it here:

Slotted as the No. 77 overall player of PFF’s top-250 list, Johnson has drop and size concerns that will push teams away, but his ability to separate consistently makes up for a lot of his woes. His two-year receiving grade (85.9) ranks tied for 10th in the class, and the fact that he can win in and away from the slot is more than enough reason to sprint the card in on Day 2.”

Excellent analysis, bro! While I cannot fully agree w/ the author of the original article - I can't help but see the eerie comparisons to the old AB. I mean it's absolutely astounding if you take the time and go over this kid's game tape. Both guys from the MAC and their abilities are nearly identical.

Now, let's be realistic.

It took AB a full year to "get it" - and I, for one, think Diontae Johnson has some 'slight' advantages in this department. Why? He has history on his side. Ben has seen this player (type) before - so have the coaches and most of the offensive linemen. Knowing that, should make the transition for DJ a bit easier. Now, this is my opinion and only time will tell. Most of you know that I have a flair for clairvoyance at times:crazy: so, let's see how this plays out but, nothing is wrong with a bit of optimism...

Is that enough football analysis for you, Pop dat Booty???
 
I will restate, CJ is the best receiver I've ever seen, coming out of college, at beating the press at the LOS. He is also excellent at creating space through route running. That being said, I still think Moncrief is ahead of him.

Though today, I'd think our 3 best receivers are 1. JuJu, 2. Moncrief, 3. CJ. Problem is Moncrief and CJ both play the X, so someone would have to play out of position to get the 3 best receivers on the field.

Says guy posting opinion and has never worked a day in the NFL in any capacity.
ALL 32 NFL teams passed on all three of those players TWICE....just as they did D. Johnson.
All went in round 3.
We liked D. Johnson more than those three.
And judging by how the draft played out, all four players were similarly ranked by real NFL scouts who get paid money to make such decisions.
Time will tell on all four, but I personally like our track record with WRs under the Tomlin/Colbert regime.

And the original questioned posed was "BY THE END OF THE SEASON, D. Johnson is #2 behind JuJu".
Not day 1 at camp.
Not preseason game 1.
Not opening day.

We need only look to JuJu in his rookie year.
He started as the 6th and final WR on the depth chart and slowly worked his way up to #2 throughout the season, aided by the Martavis Bryant fiasco, around mid-season.

I'm more inclined to buy this scenario, because it can still be true even if it doesn't happen until week 17.
Maybe he's brought along slowly. Maybe it takes him a few weeks to acclimate. Maybe Moncrief and/or Washington make it impossible for him to supplant them early.
A great dilemma for us to have.
But I think eventually his route running and work ethic can't be denied.
I watched this kid live in person at Toledo. I think he has a great chance if Washington/Moncrief leave a slight crack of an opening.
 
if he can turn into a similar like emmanual sanders even when he was here its a win, for the the speed james Washington has I expext a more po9lished mike Wallace or jeramy maclin
