Steelers Rookie Justin Layne Making an Instant Impact

I liked the Layne pick a lot. Great value for round 3. Proven to break up a lot of passes in the big ten, his height and arm length allows him to break up passes and defend the side line, without top speed. I'd like to see him add some weight.

We need him to pan out as Haden might only have 1-2 more good seasons left and the Steelers have never obtained a top free agent cornerback.

Hell, I’m just trying to remember William Gay and Ike Taylor dominating anyone. They were pretty good, but certainly don’t remember dominating being the word used to describe them.

there was that one play that went for an incompletion early in the 2nd quarter of a game back in the day.

huh?? Ike literally made many high-level wr's his *****, namely ocho cinco in his prime.

I don't like when people who do absolutely nothing to enrich this site & community nitpick things they really have no business nitpicking.

lol seriously? you're going to criticize someone for "nitpicking"? we all nitpick on here to some extent

UUmmmmmmmm, it was mid-2nd quarter.

Salute the nation

It's 21 Omar, let me have my fun.

Yes he certainly did. Shut the mofos down. Again, he just didn't get the splash plays.

No, he's not right on the money. He could've asked "where is the impact he's making that the title alludes to" or something of the sort, instead of just calling it "poorly written". Then he could maybe get a healthy dialogue going of what impact Layne could be (or not be) making.

OK, good points. But I knew what he meant. But in the spirit of Layne discussion.......

Justin Layne is a Cover 3 coordinator's dream. His combination of length and route recognition allows him to make plays most corners cannot. While he hasn’t reeled in many interceptions, he has excelled at pass breakups (with 15 last season). In the right scheme, Layne could be the steal of this draft

He lasted until the 3rd because he makes no picks....sigh. But neither did Ike. He's tall, fast enough (4.5) and has a decent ceiling.

That route recognition comes with a little raw at the position tag. Which is why I am not too concerned at his lack of INTs that and his pass breakup capability. Just an attractive mold of clay, now up to the coaches to mold him.

The Title that would have fit the article was the first line of the article. Pittsburgh Might Have Found Diamond in the Rough with 3rd Round Pick Justin Layne.

Seriously who cares. Fine aricle for an off-season summer piece. Who cares what title the editor slapped on it

But he sure caught that one that mattered in Super Bowl XL!!!

Actually he came up huge throughout his playoff career. Look at this comparison

174 Reular games 14 INT's for a TOTAL of 151 yards...

14 playoff games 3 INT's for a total of 56 yards....

Look, I don't think Ike Taylor was a bad player. Excellent CB, except for his apparent inability to catch a football. I just don't remember him being dominant. Yes he had some great games against some fantastic WR's, but dominant? I don't know. He had some stinkers against average players too. As far as William Gay, if you watch Steelers clips, that guy got a TON of timely interceptions, but aside from this article, I don't remember anyone referring to him as dominant. Excellent football players, both. You'll have to forgive me if I disagree.

This camp has the potential to be one of the best in several years. Lotta talent to sift thru in a short amount of time.

Wait a minute!!! Coach Tomlin has assembled 'a lot of talent'??? The board is going to go bonkers when they read this...

Someone stole Coach's 'puter!!!

j/k Coach! Welcome back BTW...

Fact is the title was misleading. No biggy but why pounce on someone for pointing out the obvious. I opened the thread hoping to read Layne stood out at OTA's or something. Instead I read fluff piece on the kid. Again not a big deal. Just a horrible title to the thread. I do appreciate the fact though that someone took the time to write the piece.

Yes, dominant. He may not have been great at picking the ball off, but he had MORE than his fair share of defensed passes

I remember the year Ocho Cinco was tops in the league and kept a record of all the CBs he beat that season in his locker. He had nothing to say about the first game when Ike shut him down, then stopped keeping his list after the second game. 5-54 and 2-29 in 2009.
