How did you become a Steeler fan? Let's hear your story....

So was I in 1965
We lived in the rural area between Guelph and Hespeler so television channels were limited. My CFL team was Ottawa with guys like Tom Clements and JC Watts. I used to watch American college ball when the channels would come in. When my dad installed a 50 foot television aerial with a rotar I discovered the NFL. Bleed Black and Gold ever since. First jersey # 88 Lynn Swann, favourite player all time Rod Woodson. I always loved defense more than offense so players like Lambert, Ham, Blount, Greene are what drew me in. I miss the days when other teams knew they were in for a physical beating when they played the Steelers. I hope Devin Bush and TJ Watt can be the cornerstones for a defense like that again. 3 and OUT was always my favourite cheer during a game.

Born in West Virginia in 1971. The very first football game I remember watching all the way through was Super Bowl XIII. Still to me, the greatest Super Bowl ever played ( except maybe Super Bowl XLIII ) The week before Super Bowl XIII, my dad had brought me`home a Steelers AFC Champions pennant from the game prior to that epic game. Anyways, it was love at first sight. Raised in Alabama since 1980. Didn't even know Alabama was a powerhouse at the time when I arrived here. I remember the kids on the playground the first day of school here asked me who I rooted for, I said "The Steelers." They laughed and said "No, Alabama or Auburn?" I replied "who is Auburn?" Been a Bama fan since then. Hence the username.
 
I grew up in central PA but I didn't really follow them that much until the Super Bowl X season after I was already in the Air Force. After that I was hooked until the strike of 87. I remember living in Florida in the 80s and driving as close as I could to a Jacksonville station to tune into a game with my portable TV. I remember driving back in a blizzard in 76 and listening to the Cincinnati game on the radio when we pulled one out 7-3 to stay in playoff contention. Still have the Sports Illustrated about that game. I was inconsolable after we lost the AFC Championship game to the Raiders.

I am from Hespeler.....we used to play bball in the "new" part of Mount Hope every day.
I was back at Ernie's a couple months ago, had some Hespeler Gold. Great stuff!

Small world. I still live in Hespeler part of Cambridge to this day. Where did you go to school? Do you still live in this area?
How did you become a Steelers fan ?
 
Growing up in Long island, I watched and played football at a very young age. On TV back then you were forced to watch either the Jets or the Giants. A bad combination of pathetic and dull.


My dad a wall street guy, which also meant he was a bit a gambler, not heavy but for casual things among friends .I used to pick the winner of the games for him and he take the one game I felt the best on for the heck of it. I would routinely beat his friends in on the action. They got a kick out of it. Sometimes his friends were so bad at picking games, they asked me and gave me a dollar if I was right when they used a bookie.


So I asked my dad, one day who should I root for, the Giants or the Jets? In a very NY type of reply, he said, " Son they both suck " Watch the playoff games with me and I promise you see better football. So I did, and this team in black and gold caught my eye instantly. That was my team! They kept winning in the playoffs and beat the purple team ( How a small child saw the Vikings ) that year in the super bowl. Dad took notice and gave me a Steeler t shirt from Pittsburgh when he went there on business to sell bonds. I could not wait to wear it for the playoff games that year. I wanted them to win and they did. Two championships. The rest is history.

So you only got to see the Giants or the Jets. You didn't even know who you should root for. So obviously you didn't see many games. But you were this blind squirrel just good at picking games. Pulling guesses right out of your ***. Almost the same approach you do now with the draft and regular season. I am sure it went then somewhat similar to it does now. With you thinking you are better than what reality really offers. A legend in your own mind, but nowhere else.

Its 100%. That's me. I did say I am going to change my posting habits a tad.
 
My family on both sides goes back many generations in Pittsburgh area. I didn’t have a choice nor did I want one.
 
I lived in Weirton West Virginia, use to go to see the Wheeling Ironman in 1963, which was like a minor league for Steelers at time. Had a Uncle that owned a barber shop in the train station in Pittsburgh. Was visiting and watched my first Steeler game on his black and white TV, have been hooked since. They got trounced 24-0.

Talk about small towns. My uncle had a place in New Cumberland because he liked going to the Mountaineer horse track. I swear that New Cumberland had one Main Street and probably just one of everything else. Good times though.
