By Jared Villani SteelerNation.com Pittsburgh may have found a diamond in the rough with third-round pick Justin Layne, and it looks as though he could be making early contributions to a talented, revamped Pittsburgh Steelers defense. After trading up to draft Devin Bush as well as signing Mark Barron and Steven Nelson, it became obvious […]

I don't see any reason to speculate he can become a lockdown CB so far, so the pieces on this seem like puff pieces. But I can say "Isn't it about Gosh Darn time we get lucky with a CB pick?

The last 2 who worked out were Ike and Gay. We are DUE to have a CB work out...overdue! Wouldn't it be fantastic if Haden, Nelson, Hilton, Layne and Edmunds all were legit NFL DBs? Add in Bush going bananas and TJ, Cam and Tuitt and look out world. Cleveland who?

Layne has a lot going for him. Tall, long arms, good quickness, decent change of direction, good at pressing WR's at LOS, solid in zone, good in man. He is big enough to battle for the ball in the air, jam the WR off the line, disrupt patterns. Knock on him is that he is light and sometimes loses deep coverage due to okay-not-great speed, but a little safety help and a bit of jam, no worries.

Hell, I’m just trying to remember William Gay and Ike Taylor dominating anyone. They were pretty good, but certainly don’t remember dominating being the word used to describe them.

I like Sutton, he's very diverse. Backup slot and can play outside as well. I hope he continues to progress. Talk on him possibly moving to safety.

SORRY Bobby but I'm NOT buying your "STEELERS" have to have a near perfect "D" to compete with the Cleveland Browns. Last year the. Pitt Offense was ranked 6th overall and Cleveland 21st, PITTSBURGH's "D" ranked 16 and clevelands 21st.

Don't you think PITTSBURGH has added, both on offense and defense enough to at least have a chance against the vaunted Cleveland Browns???? I'm sure Cleveland has the potential of improvement but I wouldn't drink the Koolaid the talking heads are craming down everyone's throat just yet. Maybe just maybe we should see them play, as a team, before we make this HUGE perfect "D" prediction.

Ike had a couple year stretch where he was close to shutdown corner territory. Bad thing was, he just couldn't catch ****.

My prediction for this season will be #8 on O and #8 on D. Crazy eights are comin! We get that turnover ratio in the + column, and this team will win the division.

Ike was a silent dominator because he couldn't catch the damn ball. He was always lined up on the opposing teams best WR and probably 90% of the time, he shut him down. But, he was always knocked because he couldn't catch the ball and get the interceptions that hit him in his hands. He would be considered a very top CB if he could have held onto even half of the int's he dropped.

I don't like poorly written pieces like this. The title says he's making an impact and the article provides no evidence of any impact.

That's what I'm talking about, CrazZy 8's and YES, we will finish better than 8-8 or 0-8-8, just my $.08s worth.

I'm with yaz Cope. I see both O & D in top ten this year & ultimately SB champion team.

I see you're familiar & contribute to these kind of pieces

if Bud Dupree does anything this year, our defense has the potential to be great. He picks it up, Watt is that much better and if those two get pressure on the qb, all of a sudden our secondary is better as well. I cant wait for week 1. bring on the world cheating Pats!!

But he sure caught that one that mattered in Super Bowl XL!!!

Yeah..he was and he wasn't. Ole "Stone Hands Ike" went thru spells and yes he took on the other team's ones for a couple years but he also was demoted to the bench for a spell too.

I think more along Sarge's lines but in all fairness, Ike at least had a couple pretty damn good years.

Nice analysis, excited about this guy's potential. I keep hearing in different corners that he may turn out to be a bonafide steal.

Ike dominated Chad Johnson like nobody's business. He dominated for a while, but like has been said, he just didn't get the splash plays.

I don't like when people who do absolutely nothing to enrich this site & community nitpick things they really have no business nitpicking.

I don't know about the above, but at least in this case 21STEELERS21 is right on the $. The headline claimed something the article provided none of.

No, he's not right on the money. He could've asked "where is the impact he's making that the title alludes to" or something of the sort, instead of just calling it "poorly written". Then he could maybe get a healthy dialogue going of what impact Layne could be (or not be) making.
