By Jared Villani SteelerNation.com Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joe Haden has proved to be worth every penny of the three-year deal he signed back in 2017, but he can’t play on both sides at once. However, the recent signing of former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Steven Nelson could give Haden some much needed help if he […]

Among the top cornerback tadmens? I highly doubt it. Our DB's aren't very good even with one of the best pass rushes in football. The question to me is can Nelson hold his own and make a few plays along the way?

Among the top? Probably not, especially with the Clown Posse we have for coaching. They aren't gonna get confused with the CBs in J-ville. But, as a whole, with Hilton, they could be decent. It's too bad it appears our safeties are terrible at giving our CBs some help. I'm not sure Davis or Edmunds can cover all that well.

He doesn't need to be elite. If both can be solid, the secondary will be vastly improved. I could see them as a top ten duo.

Haden is solid, but Nelson allowed the 2nd most yards of any corner in the NFL at 825 yards against. Not among the best corner tandems in football.

Not among the best corner tandems in football, but they haven't played a down together yet. Why don't we take a wait-and-see approach, and also their success is predicated on our pass rush.

Agree on the wait and see approach but I think Nelson steps up due to many factors and here are two........

1.). He will be playing behind a legitamite pass rush, something he diodn't quite have before.

2.). He will have a legitamite QB to take advantage of turnovers and to keep our "D" off the field longer than his former QB did. Our "O" averages longer time of possession than most offenses.

I doubt they will be top 5 but if they can be in the top half of CB tandems in the league, we will be doing a heck of a lot better than the past few years. And, if Bush plays well as a rookie, that would make this D a legit top 10 D not like last year.

it depends o if we can generate a passrush without blitzing every play. We really didn't have a great passrush the last few years we had great blitz packages. get some heat on the qb without blitzing and our secondary could be very good.

I thought you said you were going to change your posting habits? Doesn’t seem like it.

Sure he gave up the 2nd most yards last year. Being that he was thrown at more than any CB in the league. You’ve shown already you have no clairvoyant awareness, so why make a statement when they haven’t played one snap yet? Because you seek attention. Good or bad.

Neither are pro bowl players but can be decent combo.

The Chiefs tied us in sacks so Nelson was playing with a pass rush.

In Nelson's defense a lot of teams were playing catch-up on Chiefs points machine, so teams were throwing a lot.

I’m still not buying into Nelson until I see that he can elevate the position to at least respectability. His past play in KC doesn’t make me feel comfortable. We shall see if this just another bad FA signing or this guy actually breaks that trend.

Haden is an elite corner on the down slope of his career. He can be injury prone but still makes some big plays on the field for us. Beyond that we aren't sure what we have yet. Our defensive scheme got picked apart last year due to injuries and bad coaching. If we can correct the coaching issues (big if) than man maybe we can see this secondary make more plays on the ball and create turnovers. We need this defense to be disruptive and to create turnovers for us to get further than we have been getting. Situational football is absolutely critical to ensuring we can get stops when we need them and get our offense a chance to score more points.

wouldn't catches/target or PDs/target or TDs allowed be a more important stat? Even Yards per target?

If you are thrown at 30 times and give up 150 yards are you worse than the guy who was thrown at 15 times and gave up 100 yards?

Nelson had half as many int's as our entire Defense last year.

KC's offense did that secondary no favors, by scoring so much and so fast, opposing teams were forced to throw so much trying to catch up/keep up, so that'll skew his stats as well. How many of his yards against came in prevent D?

I'm not sure how good he is, but I'm pretty positive he's going to be better than Sensabaugh or Burns, so that's a + for us.

when he played on a team that last year was scoring at will, having to play more coverage defense than others. The Chiefs defense was on the field for 69.3 plays per game, on average, last season. Comparatively, our defense was on the field 61.7 plays per game. And the Chiefs defense - which Nelson was part of - faced 39.5 pass attempts per game - more than any other team in the league.

but you keep on pigeon holing the stats you don't understand.

I think he traded for P2 in Madden GM mode before P2 got popped for PEDs.

Absolutely. Doesn't even have to be stellar and our D will be vastly improved.

We don't have time to discuss stats he doesn't understand.
